That's not how i remember it... coming from the old sonic cartoons in the early 90s Tails really was a baby when Sonic and Tails first met. There was a family of birds that kicked Tails out of their nest because Tails was too big (and of course he's not a bird), Sonic happens to come by and pretty much took care of Tails ever since then. The shoes part was made up though.
