Boy they damn well knew how to make a movie back in the 70's. Just incredible movies from the beginning of the decade to the end. Including this great movie.
I recently saw this film for the first time and I must say it blew my mind away!
Sidney Lumet had startled me before with Network, which I consider possibly the greatest American film ever made, but with Dog Day Afternoon I simply was yet again thrown off my seat or sofa which is where I was sitting at the time I saw this film.
Movies can't get any better than this like Scott said. It is truly a masterpiece!
@stableshadow yes! it's amazing how so many of these comments site pacino as a genius, with no mention of cazale!? john cazale was the greatest actor of all time, in my opinion. he could say more with a look than most actors can say with a page of diologue.
@tatelabianca Al Pacino agrees with you on Cazale. He was supremely talented and under appreciated IMO, but I still think Pacino is better, I think he has this epic range that no one has touched.... ever.
@tatelabianca I agree with you in regards to Cazale. He is criminally underrated, probably because he only starred in the grand total of five movies - but what movies they were! The Godfather I&II, The Deer Hunter, The Conversation, Dog Day Afternoon - that's one hell of a track record. And he is probably the only actor ever whose movies have all been Oscar-nominated. This particular movie entirely rests on the chemistry between him and Pacino, it just sparkles. Too bad his career was cut short.
It doesn't matter if the trailer gives away the plot. Watch it because its a flawless film. In the seventies you would see a trailer before a film in a theater only. Its not like you had endless youtube loops back then.
do you know what, i love al pacino, what an actor, he seems to have lost his way slightly but i think that comes with age but at this point he was top of his game and just simply dynamite!!!
@ryanakababyface He hasn't lost "his way" at all, it's just that it's hard to find movies like this anymore, b/c studios would never make a movie like this anymore. Also, have you seen him on Broadway lately? He's as AMAZING as ever.
Oh God, don't even give them an idea like that. If they do, I might fucking snap and kill everyone involved. For the love of John Cazale and Sidney Lumet, don't slap this one in the face with that big white Hollywood cock. No, please, don't let them do it, man. ATTICA! ATTICA!
One of my favourite films - never tire of watching it. The scene where Sonny is dictating his Will to the manager...a great example of how the character's humour and humanity faces the reality
É absolutamente inacreditável a força desse trabalho de Lumet. Sua contemporaneidade extrapola décadas com rara inteligência de quem pode observar o extrapolar do cotidiano de vidas,
This is an awesome movie, but for some reason no one can answer me this one question: Why did Sonny burn the bank register? What was the point in doing that? It did after all, get him caught.
Up so the bank people wouldnt know how much money he had taken and it would be harder to trace. He shouldve just taken it with him, and done everything like a hundred times quicker. Cause yeah he fucked up pretty bad.
Lance Henriksen plays that cop Murphy at the end. One of his early films.

Although I have already seen the film, is is not quite convenient how they spoil all the endings of the films Scott reviews?

@burrfscott I bet they will, Hollywood's running out of new ideas so the people there are using old ideas to get their paychecks. It's sad actually

Great film, Lumet is a terrific director. This is probably Pacino's best performance besides "Serpico."
