if you google 308 vs 7.62 there is a pdf link that goes into great detail. the bottom line is that 7.62 rounds have the thicker brass to avoid head separation when fired from semi autos. the brass is thicker but external dimensions are the same to .308, therefor, the INNER dimensions are different so the 7.62 rounds hold less powder. thus, slightly lower pressure. in conclusion, 7.62's are designed to have stronger brass, NOT less pressure. One just causes the other.
although the .308 win and 7.62x51 NATO are not technically identical either can be fired SAFELY from a rifle chambered for either cartridge. The pressure differences are negligible and if fact IDENTICAL in the M118 long range (sniper) round. 7.62 rounds tend to have thicker brass for use in Semi-auto rifles but external dimensions are the same.
hippy draftees complained about the awesome recoil of the m14 so the government solved this problem by giving them a rifle that didnt shoot at all. from what i hear the recoil on the ar10 is a dream not that there is anything wrong with the m14s recoil.
ROFL@ALL YOU KNOWITALLS. Looking at my PMC ammo it says right on the box .308 (7.62 NATO). The difference between ball ammo and commercial ammo is the powder itself. Personally I don't like shooting the ball ammo because of the sulfur content because its so corrosive. I use PMC ammo in mine so no problems as far as a .308 round is concerned.
@aerodynamicband The only way commercial .308 wouldn't be safe would be if you jacked a round in, pointed the muzzle at yourself or somebody else, and pulled the trigger.
only put .308 through the weapon if it is specifically chambered for .308. if the gun is chambered to only fire 7.62 dont put .308 through it. .308 fires at greater pressures than the 7.62 and can lead to catastrophic failures if the weapon isnt designed to fire the .308.
10-7. QUESTION: Is the chamber on an AR-10 .308 or 7.62? ANSWER: All of our AR-10s are NATO chambered and will accept both 7.62 and .308 ammo. The AR-10 can shoot 308 or 7.62 NATO. See the AR-10 owner’s manual for more detailed ammo information.
... marketing is half truths. you can put .308 though any rifle marked 7.62 nato. but your going to beat the shit out of it and risk blowing your chamber up. they even say that the barrels are chambered for NATO. that means 7.62 nato. If the barrel is not marked for .308 dont feed it .308. they are selling half truths to make money. welcome to the world of marketing.
@Lonewolf6565 You blow your weapon up you have to go back and buy more parts just like . Yea Drive it like you stole it. Hotter it gets the better it works.
no it does not. the .308 is intended for bolt action hunting rifles. the 7.62X51 was designed for auto loading rifles that require lower pressures to keep from damaging the actions. .308 and 7.62 are backwards in pressures compared to the 5.56 and .223. you dont know what the fuck you are talking about.
The originals from the 1950's could be belt-fed as well. I've seen an old promotional video where a soldier advances with a belt-fed AR10, then pops in a few mags when it runs out and just keeps shooting.
Put your thumb through the trigger guard in front of the trigger and hook it through a belt loop. With the other hand on the fore grip, slowly apply forward pressure - the pressure of your thumb against the trigger builds up to the point where the AR fires. When constant forward pressure is applied, the recoil will do the rest. With an AR10, hang on tight.
it seems alot of kids are teaching kids in here...

i have a question is it safe to run commercial .308 through one of these or do you have to use just surplus ball ammo

@TomKatCustom i mean are there differences in the powder charges in the loadings. like there is between the .223 and .556?
aerodynamicband 1 year ago
@TomKatCustom Not true you can use hand loads. I know that for a fact.

@Lonewolf6565 on an armalite ar-10 it says multi. on the barrel so it can fire either one with out a problem.

@Lonewolf6565 Its if its 7.62 then its ok to put 308 thur it not the other way around and it will not hurt the gun
