Ref catkin3, Blackbird was probably watching for the cat,To get the timing right, still a high risk thing to do.Especially with fledgling,Some seem more willing to take risk, than others.I think being born, in very close proximity to humans is part reason. You are right about protein,It takes a lot of energy searching for food for their young and themselves They need to generate bodily heat in the winter months. Regards. wisfull.
A similar thing happened to me. I had a blackbird who used to come in to eat from my cats food bowl!! Later in the year he started to bring his son/daughter to feed alongside him at the food bowl. I started then to put left over cat food outside on the bird table. He has stopped coming oin now. I think they need protein in the form of meat and sometimes if they cant get enough from the garden they look elsewhere.
Thre was a particularly tame young male blackbird, that used to fly down from the fence every morning it seemed to go beyond the association with food, it hopped through the back door and into the kitchen, with worms in it,s beak of course we had to gently usher it out,he never came so close again which made us a little sad but of course to close a connection to humans is a threat to it,s survival. wishfull.
Some years ago in summer I had a blue twit which flew in thru the window into my kitchen everyday, took the curve thru the door into my living room, from where it then flew out again thru the window. It always made a short stop on my refrigerator and cupboard where I always have a porcellain plate with fruit and vegetable leftovers... :-)
