Yeah, you've got a point about the four string basses, they seem to have dissappeared. I personally preffer the four string, basically because I'm a traditionallist, but I have nothing against the five string. I would be nice to see some more four sting bass videos on youtube so that us learners can attempt what these people are doing without any limitations. Long live the four string!!!!
Screw fads...not that a 5 sting has no merit...it does. But if you wanna play a 4 string (I do)there is no reason to get caught up in the '4 or 5 controversy'. Personal taste...and if anybody gets too uppity about one over the other just remember Geddy Lee(I love Rush. seen them 9 times)Stanley Clarke and many many more who proved that 4 stings are timeless. it is the player not how many strings you have(how long your stuff is or what car you drive or) Reality is other than faddish tech talk

good playing man. just wondering how long have you been playing and was that before or after you lost parts of your fingers? sounds great, better than a lot of people who have all their fingers! keep playin man. cirrus are nice, i have an ibanez btb 676, can't stand fender anymore...
Ive been playing the bass for nearly 2 years, I'm pretty good at it, But I just cant seem to teach myself how to play slap, so I have to improvise on lots of stuff, which is why I use a pick for most bass lines, and I hate how people think just because I use a pick I'm not a bass player.
Nobody ever taught me bass. I learned slap by imitating RYAN MARTINIE of Mudvayne. At first, it was just throwing my hand pretty quickly, but then, you just learn what angles and what movements produce the sound YOU want.
its not that your not a bass player or that your bad at it. just that you can do more with out a pick, and it understandable y people would think that your not a bass player because of it
One of my pro bassist friends was saying how his dad (there family likes bass lol) uses a pick, which is what most people did round his time. And that means that he can do things he couldnt possibly do, but then his son can do things his dad cant do with his fingers. Who knows, maybe you could master a bit of both. For guitar I fingerpick and use a plectrum when ever i feel like it. its nice to have the coordination to do both, it just takes time. not that im a bassist but i guess its similar
The Peavey Cirrus came out several years before the Grind series. The Cirrus then was truly American craftsmanship and very good quality. The Grinds are made in Indonesia or somewhere. They are somewhat playable, but they don't hold a candle to the Cirrus basses for feel, playability and sound quality. I've had my Cirrus at least 10 years... Thanks for the comments...
All very good points. The cirrus has a custom shop too, btw.
I've been dying to try a G&L , but nobody stocks them around here. They very well may be the only bass company that i haven't heard a single bad comment on.

dude....great playing....but ima go out there and ask it....it kinda looks like your missing a couple fingers...if you are that makes you even more amazing at bass
I wonder the same thing about his fingers! Let us be reminded though, the late and VERY GRATE Jerry Garcia had only 9 fingers, and he grooved on his guitars. Don't let a person with a few less fingers make you think they aren't awesome! Sonicman, you rock!
And yes, it does make him even more amazing at bass.
Not the USA made ones the Indonesian Cirrus BXPs and Vietnamese Grinds are cheap for what you get, neck through for both of them. although I have heard some nasty things about the grinds build quality on Harmony central and the like.
yea i wouldnt buy a american made bass personally, but im buying the Esp Exp D-5 its also made in Indonesia so im getting it for really cheap, and its better quality :) made from Merbau wood (luxury hardwood (endangered) hah :P
In regards to the grind build quality; that has been hugely sorted out, the build quality has really improved. Probably because they read reviews like those posted on Harmony central, always good to see a reactive company.
i don't want to be rude by pointing this out, but it looks like your fingers have been in an accident or something. That is great that you're still playing. You're like the Phil Keagy of bassists. keep it up.
That's awesome! I've been playing the four-string for eight months with training, and my teacher says I'm doing very well, so for my birthday I'm getting a five-string. I'm curious, do you play BEADG or EADGC?
Not much different. Like I said in an earlier post, it is the same fingering patterns. Also, once you get familiar with five strings, you will not want to go back. Six strings is a little too much for me though...
depends on your posture. if you had many unnecessary motions playing 4s, it'll probably take a little time with 5s to get use to. but not too long, couple hours i'd say.
A Four-String Bass Guitar has the following strings: E A D G (Lowest pitch to Highest Pitch). Most Five-String Bass Guitars have the some strings plus another string that is lower in pitch and larger in diameter, a B. If you play by using finger position patterns like I do, then the lower B string fits the same pattern. All you have to do is shift your left hand to a different position.

Hi, how do you qualify the B String sound compared to a Laklaknd 55-01 or a G&L Tribute.(both 35" scale)?
(for reference: I play in Bb (half step down), and mostly play rock driven music , with chorus and flange sometimes, and a little bit of distortion)
Thanks

Gilleece666 3 years ago
i recently traded my grind 5 string and another bass and bought a cirrus...there is no comparison...the cirrus is 10 levels beyond
peavyt15 3 years ago
PLus Grinds are passive and use very dense woods creating a thick woody tone...They make great candidates for fretless though.
Cirrus use some exotic woods and active electronics...although just being American doesn't say they are built 10/10.
Just like American Fender's, they are built well and are expensive...but not built as well as they could be.
KongoXIIV 3 years ago
IMO/IME Peavey has better QC than Fender, but i would still agree with your point.
bassist12345 3 years ago
Yeah I think your right...but it depends on the area of Fender.
A Fender Custom shop job WILL be near perfect.
American Fenders are good too...just not built as well as they should be for the price.
But yeah, IU think Peavey has it.
That said, Leo sold Fender ages ago and ever since then the Quality went down, whereas Hartley Peavey still owns Peavey.
G&L are Leo's ultimate creations though.
PLease, play one if you find one.
the L-2000 series is a Fender Stingray LOL!
