I am also here because of the google doodles the other day..(Ms. Graham's birthday)...thank you...she is WONDERFUL and edgy and so very gifted! Quite the legend in dance as it should be.
Greetings from Malaysia! Happy 117th Birthday Martha Graham : ) , I am indeed very proud to learn your techniques! thank you for the wonderful contribution to the world of dance! :-)
sorry danced into her 60s in 1969 she retired finally* but she honestly had some brutal challenges to overcome to create what has made a massive impact on the arts
She suffered greatly for this genius and pioneering spirit, a lot of poverty, tragedy, exile - she danced until her 80s, she did her own costumes - sometimes her own settings - this was a Wonder Woman of the Arts
I ahve nto taken ballet but have taken intensives in her school in NYC for two eyars. She is an amazing genius, pioneer at a time that women just started voting...amazing, revolutionary work.
I Love the Work that Martha Did I Find it Amazing. Modern Dance Is To Go Outside The Rules Of Ballet. I Find Her Work Outstanding. And To All Of Yuu Who Find Her Work Ugly Look At It More Close And Look At Her Technique. I Find It Beautiful.
I absolutely respect her work and modern dancing as a whole however I still do believe that classical ballet has a much more tremendous amount of beauty and undefined technique that cannot compare to any type of modern dancing.
Ballet technique is CLEARLY about beauty, is incredibly developed, and is the real content of it's choreographies. Contemporary Art in general, and dance is no exception, has always been about challenging and questioning rather than reassuring or calming. It's strength is that it's less about a familiar beauty, and more about ideas & investigations. That was a big part of what pushed dance out of the realm of craft and into the realm of art. Both have their place. Neither can replace the other.
Her dances are usually about things that are ugly or austere. Her technique reflects that intensity. That's why it's so expressive, moving, and so human.
Picasso's paintings are 'ugly' in a similar way. Or, perhaps, similarly sublime.
i too had the honor and privilege to study with Martha and the other greats- Balanchine, Ailey, back in the 70's & 80's. My heart beats a little faster as I stroll down memory lane, remembering their genius.
what i love is the clarity and and truth of her images she presents with human bodys. the heretic SOO many times has moments which scare the hell out of me. and i love the modern dance movement as started by isadora duncan and martha graham, because it's not placing on the body the demands of making your body something it might not be (like ballet)... instead, it appreciates the individual and creates wonderful things within the scope of you as an individual.
I was so lucky to have been at the Graham School in the 70's when Martha was alive. She came up to me at the end of an intensive 3 week workshop, walking very slowly from the front of the studio to the very back of the studio where I was seated on the floor and said, "Young man, you relate things very well." To this day I know myself as someone who relates things very well, not only in dance, but in the rest of my life.
Hello, i saw your post here on youtube and i wonder if you could help me, because i´m doing a college work about Martha Graham biography, filosophy and techquine, and since you participated in her school when she was alive,i wonder if you could help me. What was she like in classes, the way she teached, the things she would say about her technique, etc.everything you could tell me about her,i really thank. anything will help me.i´m a big fan of her. here is my email lucascbueno@hotmail.com. thanks
it's mind blowing to think that a person would think that a year of dancing would be all you would ever learn from a lifetime of great work. I think your comment was nicely put and bravo. I have been dancing 22 years and still learning everyday. martha g. is one of my childhood inspirations..the icons of dance from my childhood are nothing like today. Gene kelly, gregory hines, Atstaire. I love the new wave, but feel the youth should know their roots, the ones their icons looked up to.
Martha Grahams dancing easy????? are you out of your mind? check out Medeas solo, night journey, diversion of angels etc, etc. Where is your video? Id love to see what you do,NEXT COMES THIS: oh I just heard JS Bach it is so easy, not to mention Picasso uuu anybody can do that... PLEASE!!!
I did Graham technique for 5 yrs and still have bone spurs on my knees to prove it. I have danced for 20 years and Graham was the hardest technique i have ever encountered.
I am also here because of the google doodles the other day..(Ms. Graham's birthday)...thank you...she is WONDERFUL and edgy and so very gifted! Quite the legend in dance as it should be.

I've always seen ballet as discipline and modern as freedom. You must have balance.

I was mesmerized. And still am. By her intensity.

to eldin3,
i love graham dance also but i have to disagree with you and say that it is not easy.
To say that is an underestimation of the complexity of the technique and her ballets.
If you have studied graham dance for only one year you have probably just begun the most simple variations of the movement.
Continue to study the technique and you will see that the complexity of the floor work builds.
It will give you and understanding of how to perform her great works.
