This is one of the best Star Trek episodes in my mind and it's actually (physically) not very Star Treky. Of course it is in underlying important theme. Very deep.
Mr Todd came to DragonCon 11 and talked about this epoisode. He said his mom died not long before filming started and he used the emotions he felt from that to put into filming this ep.
this episode, the episode where Data's daughter Lall dies, and the episode where Picard is attached to the probe where he lives an entire lifetime with a civilization dead for thousands of years were the most emotional episodes in star trek.
A beautiful and touching episode. Avery Brooks is fantastic as always as Sisko, but Tony Todd completely owns this episode. Anyone who doesn't feel something at its conclusion is either dead or heartless.
Yep, I just finished watching on Netflix, and i've seen it before. Soon as it came up and got going i remembered the episode. The 1st time i saw it, i swear i was crying lol. Even now, Knowing the whole thing...I still cried. Its something that whichever person Jake or Capt Sisko, you feel horrible for them. The acting was great too. Got some real emotions out of this. :-) Great episode. Well done!
I just watched this on Netflix and cried for the entire episode. I'm a grown man. This just goes to show you how important family is to us all. I can't imagine losing my father or mother. After all of these years of seeing this episode so many times, it still moves me in ways that nothing else can. I miss this show.
I forgot how amazing this show really was, I mean I like them all but this show had....it is hard to discrib. Why did they never make a movie out of this show???? or include these characters. It is about time don't yah think??
Gosh... I'm a proper 20 years old guy (almost 21), never cry on drama moments or whatever, but this episode and even this scene alone throw me in tears every single time I watch....
@giedosst Wow. Godwinning a Star Trek thread? Impressive. FWIW, I was lukewarm at best about Abrams' movie, too, but I'm not sure I'd go so far as to compare him or it to Der Führer.
This was the episode that made me truly fall in love with DS9.
For all the developments and story-arcs that were to follow, the show was always first and foremost about the characters. And that is why this episode, and this scene in particular, is so bloody brilliant at tugging on the heart-strings.
Well If a whole bunch of people like it well then how could it be wrong? What was I thinking? When a whole bunch of people like something its perfectly wonderfull! A whole bunch of people loved hitler and well you know how that turned out! Ill never question the validity of something the mindless stupid mass of sheep we call people like again.
@Azakhiel Hey, I suppose you are right, I mean, Hollywood has to cash in on something! I suppose I should go easy on them, I mean, they don't have a fucking original idea in their heads! Wait wait, I'm sorry Hollywood, here, take the 10 dollars I don't have to see your sub standard hunk of flashy crap you call a movie, I understand.
A rare moment when everything clicks and we witness excellent sci fi. This is my favorite episode of Trek, followed closely by The Inner Light, another great yet heartbreaking story.
The Visitor is hands down one of the best episodes of any Star Trek series. I can never get through the episode without crying no matter how many times I've seen it.
Many people have told me they disliked Sisko because he seemed so unemotional. To me he always seemed to be deeply passionate but kept his passional under strict control. This episode (which brings a tear to my eyes every time) is to me THE prime example of this. Thanks for posting it.
My dad, who got me hooked on Trek when I was a small child, is dying.
Since his stroke, he hasn't been here anyway, but now he's in his final decline.
Always loved this ep; used it to teach my daughter about the importance of loyalty. Now, I'm sitting here w/tears running down my face, thinking of Dad.
Thank you for putting this video up, its the best, and most emotional Star Trek Episode I have ever watched. Every time I see it, it makes me cry. With Father's day around the corner again, let's make sure that our Father's know what they mean to us.
makes you want to go back and check the episode lists on wikipedia dont it. but yeah, probably the best ds9 ep, and top 5 of all ST eps. cant believe you missed it too.
It is obvious to those in the know that Tony Todd has featured in three incarnations of Trek, Next Gen, DS9 and Voyager (as one of the Alpha Hirogen.) He's clearly a very talented actor.
He was originally considered to play the role of Ben Cisco. If you weigh the acting talent of all the leading and supporting casts all of the star trek series - DS9 out-weighs the other 4 put together by a very large margin.
I remember watching this when it originally aired, man i did not see this episode coming at all, outstanding writing and acting.DS9(especially the earlier seasons)was soo underated.
Such a simple scene yet so shockingly powerful and emotional with its sincertiy and honesty. I was moved to tears by this. Thank you so much for posting this.
This clip made me think about my son, who lives far away from me, with his mother. I miss him very much. I love him and he is one of the things that keeps me going in life. Even if things didn't work between his mother and I, he will always be his father's and mother's joy and happiness. I promised her and him, that I'll see him as much as I can, and they will always have a special place in my heart.
One of the greatest tearjerkers ever in all of ST. When Old Jake tells Sisko, "He needs you, more than you can know," that just gets me every time, and when Sisko says, "Jake, my sweet boy," such good acting.
He leaves Jake anyways but at that time Jake has already become a man. It's those early years when a boy is approaching manhood that he truly needs a father figure..Love this episode....
This touching scene, and then later towards the series' end, Sisko ends up leaving Jake anyway to become... a wormhole alien? I would hope he would return someday rather than leave Jake and Cassidy and his new child alone. But whether we will ever see a DS9 movie, I don't know.
This and Emissary do it for me, not so much The Inner Light. Both of those DS9's are about family, Jake loosing his father, and Sisko dealing w/ the death of his wife. The Inner Light, for me, was very good, but i just like those other episodes better. PS: ever notice that a common theme in Star Trek is dealing with loss? Almost every main character in TNG had an episode dealing w/ this and some in the other series, also.
Everytime I watch this episode, I always end up in tears at one point or another. I'm a guy, and i'm not ashamed to say this. This episode alone is worth seeing for anyone, Trek-fan or just common viewer.
Trek tearjerker.
