@549heydrew I dont know if you got an answer or not but the best of my knowledge he uses a Selmer Paris alto saxophone; probably a Mark VI, with a New York Meyer 5M and La Voz reeds.
If you don't want to spend a fortune on a vintage New York Meyer; can get upwards to $2500, Meyer makes a Richie Cole model which is simply a clone of his vintage New York Meyer. Its a pretty awesome player and you can get the mouthpiece from the woodwind and brasswind for around $120.
Thanks so much for posting this wonderful jazz composition. I heard it on a jazz show on radio years ago and had not heard it in a long time. The artistry of Richie Cole playing alto sax on this song is awesome. Kudos to all involved in the quartet as well as those who recorded it and especially to jazzexcursion for putting this on You Tube!
I don't think Richie Cole has ever been a good blues player. He always plays the same old riffs I've heard a hundred times on things like Punishment blues.
But this is differen't . Here he's ignoring the tendency to play blues patterns altogether and instead plays it as a straight Jazz piece using the songs melodic theme as the basis for his solo. (Thematic improvisation) The result - a solo of intense lyrical and emotional beauty. You can almost hear him singing into the sax.
Anyone know his set-up?
