Ya but you rarely need to download drivers or install programming from a cd-rom, with my Nikon Coolpix I had to install drivers and two programs for it to work properly on my Acer, but my Mac needed none of that, same goes for my Fujifilm camera and my Nikon camcorder. With Mac everything just works, you should try one, you'll love it.

On Linux (and on Mac too I guess) you would just type

file /home/chris/out.pnm

and immediately get told what the file actually is:

/home/chris/out.pnm: Netpbm PPM "rawbits" image data

Then you look what the problem is with your programs.

Should take less than 10 Minutes.
