LOL, I had a crush on Urmanov too! I was 11 when I saw the Lillehammer Olympics...still one of my all-time favorite skaters. He had such class too....the commentators were making fun of his costume, but my mom and I nicknamed him "The Prince." I would say Lambiel is probably the closest to being his successor in artistry.
That's ridiculous .Elvis has been one of the best skaters in the technical part ,but couln't be compared to Urman presentation (which includes body lines, expression, elegancy, interpretation and a variety of characters) .Elvis skated like he never knew those things exist - "one role" skater
OH the boy has deserved to win Olympic Title (although maybe not this particular year) just for his grace along!!! Wonderful performance! Great skater!
I like Urmanov and think his Swan Lake program a couple years later was absolutely beautiful. But let's be realistic..yes, he has great jumping ability and wonderful speed across the ice. His carriage and traditional artistry is captivating. However, his footwork is very basic, and his spins are labored and mechanical looking. I don't think that he had the "complete package" at least when it comes to the short program where 4 of the 7 elements were spins and footwork.
Thank you so much... this clip brings back such a memory... I was screaming and cheering so loud, my neighbours came knocking to see what the heck was going on!! Alyosha was, still is, and will forever be my biggest hero on the ice!!
My God...I searched for 13 years for this performance..I loved him, he was such a great skater..so graceful, so elegant, so incredibly sweet and beautiful ...and wonderful jumps, great atitude, artistry...a complete artist. He deserved to win the Olympics
ANd who exactly "deserved" to win the gold?? Stojko?- The mullet machine with zero persoanlity and ZERO CH!??
Petrenko and Browning were exceptional in the free but both faultered in the short! Browning was way back in 12th!
Urmanov had a killer short, a complete skater. He had a really good free, 3rd best on the night- and FULLY deserved to be the champion. The judges shared my opinion, your opinion is therefore meaningless! :P
Urmanov absolutely deserved to win the Olympic gold medal. And I'm glad he did.

Aleksei is cute... Stojko is a great skater but Urmanov has got him beat on presentation.... and his costumes are cool.

@MelleAndKev In my opinion Urmanov has Stojko beat overall basic skating skills, edging etc. in general.

He certainly deserved to win the SP but not the LP or gold medal. Elvis didn't make a single mistake in his LP - can't say the same about Alexi.

Elvis singled his first attempt at the triple axel (which he later repeated). That could have cost him a tenth of a point in artistic impression.

He is pretty classic when it comes to Russian skaters. I remember watching these Olympics though and I had no doubt he was the winner.
