wow, I was unaware the Swedish were such an intolerant, bigoted group.

they really have a an anemic view of social justice. I hope more documentaries and videos make the world aware of what racist, elitist, intolerant, ignorant people those who hold power in that government are.

@mieroth yes, hence my comment , and what is going on with the Saami, using a codified law to tell them their traditions are not written so they do not count is a poor attempt to make slow genocide look like a natural event with no chance of blame settling in its rightful place. Reindeer destroy trees by rubbing the bark? So does every other antlered animal, they have been doing it for ever without doing one tenth of the damage being done by"Modern Progress". Did you watch it?

@valhoundmom: Why would traditions be written in law? Swedish traditions aren't and Swedes are indigenous to the southern parts of the country. The only real aspect of culture defined by law is language, and Sami is an official minority language in Sweden. So overall I'm not sure what you're ranting on about. Private land owners having tensions with the Sami is nothing new and the Swedish government has in recent years come to no decision which would be detrimental to Sami culture. o.O

It is a nasty practice to walk into an area used traditionally by nomadic people write a deed then claim the traditional herders have no claim since they have no deed. The court finding a judgement that holds the Sami to a binding monetary judgement for some imaginary "damages" is hideous! That is what I am ranting about. In case I'm not explaining well, I am agreeing- and these practices amount to a type of passive genocide.

@valhoundmom: This is not a black and white issue as you seem to think. Swedish law has for years been based on equality and giving special treatment to any group is because of this seen as a less-than-good thing. Land owners are perfectly within their rights to complain about the Sami as well. The feud between the land-owners and Sami is long-going but the Sami did eventually win. In high court no less, meaning few land owners are likely to sue again. So what's your problem, exactly?

@mieroth At the time of the video they had NOT yet won, Seriously I'm not sure what YOUR problem is, I think maybe you don't understand English well, or I used too many unfamiliar words or something. Social intolerance is ALWAYS bad, and this is just one expression of it. The ONLY reason landowners are with in their rights is because one day they showed up with written documents saying the are. The Sammi do not have such and until the Land owners arrived they probably were not needed.

It has to do with different people claiming rights over a piece of land. And don't tell me you're seriously arguing that everything is all rainbows and roses in Sami history. The Sami have as much of a definition of territory as anyone and have battled over it (primarily with other Sami groups). And it goes on and on...

Having just spent time there I can tell you that the Sami people are a great people!

You all love wolves more than the the sami people and the reindeer? May I suggest 1,000 wolves to be let lose in the middle of Stockholm????

@ColleenLass its all about the cycle of life, wolves and reindeer are apart of it, humans are no longer. cuz we take and never give, we arent hunting for food anymore. We arent being hunted anymore, we are in our own little food chain, if we let the wolves and reindeers alone, they would handle it just fine, and did you know that some samis kills their reindeers in a very inhuman way, cuz they can, in the rest of sweden, animal laws are protecting the animals, but it doesnt protect the reindeer.

I hate raindeers, they can walk wherever they want, wich usually ends up in the middle of the road to lick the salt, and everytime someone hits a raindeer with a car the samis get money, so if you ever hit and kill a raindeer, cut their marked ear off and keep it so no sami can get money from it. The Sami want to kill every wolf they see just to protect their reindeer. I know the Sami want respect but I love Swedish wolves, they are my favorite animal. Just becuase they sometimes eat deer does not mean the Sami can kill them all off. The Svenska ulv is a beautiful creature; I wish the Sami has so much as a little soft spot for her! :,(

I have heard that the reindeer herdrers will kill any wolf they see to protect their deer. Nordic wildlife ecologists want to help save the Nordic wolf and don't hate the Sami, they just want the herders and wolves to live in peace. The herders were offered monetary compensation to make up for losses to wolves, but they refused to accept it and just wanted the right to kill wolves. Do the herders want all wolves dead or just a few? I want, as do most Swedes, 500 wolves i Sverige!

Thank you for bringing the Sami's plight to the world's attention. It is true that the plight of the Sami is shared by indigenous people around the world. I live half a world away from Sweden. The indigenous people here are also losing their ancestral lands to private developers. These indigenous people have no idea that land could be owned and are completely at a loss after being displaced from their ancestral lands.
