Do you have the TSU Tornadoes "TheTighten It Up" instrumental only track?? ya know cause they did the music behind Archie Bell and the Drells & actually the song was written by them as well! Supposedly the recording of the instrumental was at "Doyle Jones' eight track studio" in Houston, Texas. Hey it may not exist thoug..aah why do I even try....
May 18, 1968 this was number 1 on the Cashbox survey. Everybody can do it, but don't get too uptight. Love Archie Bell and the Drells, from Houston Texas no less. This was popular for a long time before I graduated that June.
This song was tops in '68. We used to listen to it and other great stuff on our handheld transistor radios, which were then cutting-edge technology. 'Tighten Up' captures a mysterious spirit which leads to smiles.
dude, i love this song!! this was, like, my favorite song from the ages of 4-8. This and michael Jackson's "Black or White." I'm only 14 but i grew up listening to Motown and going through my grandfathers records.
I heard this song around 1975 or 1976, I was born in the late 60s and grew up in San Francisco but too young for the flower power movement but I was catching here and there music of the radio. The 'JERK' would be the dance to do to this song? Cool : )
Tighten Up is just is another one of the best songs. A long time ago when I was in Elementary school they used to have end of the year parties. So a lot of times they played this. Now, Dj's play today's artists at parties like Lady Gaga, All-American Rejects, Jonas Brothers, Lil Wayne, Maroon 5 and all of those artists that are a piece of crap. They have to play great songs like this or they will be in trouble.
I was born in the 70's but I heard it on the 1st black radio station in America AM 1070 WDIA just a few years ago. Awesome funky feel good song. I wish more songs in this millenium will have more instrumental artistry than that computerized crap that I will never buy. I buy old school stuuf. 60's I know was awesome
Geez, 1968 comes rushing back in the form of Archie Bell and the Drells. We must have danced to this record until the grooves fell off of it. We had such a great time that year, everyone turned 21 and even though Vietnam was knocking on the door we were still surviving. I lasted until February 1969 when I finally got drafted, eventually making my way to Vietnam (Black Horse) for one Tour of Duty. How's that famous saying go? "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times."
We did the "Tighten Up" in Chicago in 1968 on WJPC -Thom Joyner's old station. I'm 45 and my older sister (who was 17 in 1968) and my older brother (then 15) showed me (5 years
old) how to do the "Tighten Up"). Chicago went crazy over the Tighten Up. I still stop and get chill bumps 40 years later
4 people cannot do the tighten up.

I wish someone would post part 2 of this song. I remember spining both parts on my parents old stereo in 1968. I was 7 or 8 years old at the time.
