He was black. He was also far bluesier and sophisticated than Robert Johnson who's strength was songwriting. As a finger picker, Johnson wasn't as influential as Tampa Red either! Tampa red was sooo cool.
They were different kinds of blues. Johnson was more Delta blues in his style, while Tampa added a lot of jazz, vaudeville/ standard style singing to his repertoire.
whats "bluesier" mean? imo johnson's style just cant be touched by anyone, strengths and weaknesses aside. i love all these old country blues, but RJ just had it all.
Perhaps it was a poor choice of words--sorry. Bluesier in the sense that RJ had more of a folk-blues approach while, if you listen to Red, you'll hear phrasing, scales, stops (dynamics) that had more direct influence on the urban blues bands to follow (hence the use of the phrase "more sophisticated" as well). I agree that RJ was terrific but they are merely different, neither being better than the other. Remember, BB was influenced by LONNIE Johnson-not RJ and BB is the most influential of all.
Awesome blues!! Tampa Red is such a good guitarist! By the way, not that it matters, but (just out of curiosity) was Tampa Red black or white? I can't tell from the photos of him...
Red or Redbone is an term African-Americans use to describe folks who are extremely light-skinned (black, white, sometimes native american ancestry) who in some cases are able to "pass" as white. America has a different view on who is considered black or white than the rest of the world because of our history of the "one drop" rule. Look it up, its very interesting

Tampa Red to Robert Nighthawk to Earl Hooker, there isn't a much more important trail in Blues guitar. Study your history and get the facts straight.

Tampa was considered black (not sure what else he may have had in him, but he would be considered black).
