The reason that toilet paper is harder to push cut is because most toilet paper is made from recycled paper. As the paper fibers are processed again and again the fibers in the paper become shorter. The short fibers are why toilet paper will tear out and not shear like other paper.
Also, the reason that newspaper and printer paper work as a finishing strop is the fillers like clay and limestone that are put in them to keep ink from bleeding.
i got a question, why do you use newspaper? Is there any difference between that and say notebook paper or printer paper as far as stropping is concerned
So sir my question to you is does it have to be a 6000 grit stone to get the perfect edge? Can you use 5000 or possibly 8000 grit? I'm asking this because
I know a small variable like this could produce big dilemmas.
Though you may save some stone material for "longer life" by not flattening or beveling your stones you also lose "stone life" too because of pressure flaking loss as evidenced by missing sides and corners on your stones. Even if you claim the stones chipped when dropped or rough handled I submit that they only broke along pressure lines formed from sharpening without beveling. I respect your view and philosophy on sharpening however, every Togishi I watch bevels his stones. Agree? Disagree?
dude, you are awesome. in a world of gadgets and gizmos, you still show the technique prevails. i only wish that i could be half the blade smith you are when i get older
hey Mr. carter, i'm sitting here in my kitchen sharpening a knife using the techniques you gave me in the free tips. currently, however, i am trying to sharpen a cheap serrated edge, trying to make it a more traditional flatter edge. but doing that using very shallow strokes takes a very long time. when doing this, if you do, do you use a higher angle of attack and then lower the edge? or do you still use a shallow stroke?
@iilovebooks If you're trying to make you're knife a plain edge you need to lay the knife flat on the stone and grind away the serrations. In Murray's Introduction to Knife Sharpening he actually shows how to grind away a serrated edge - I think you would find this video very informative for your needs. Hope that helps!
@DudeNumberOnePlus We'll try and include a shot of it in our next Q & A video. It was from a Japanese Pro series kitchen knife with a kata-ha (chisel) grind. You could also own your own Carter razor as Murray is finishing production on 20 Traditional and Japanese straight razors that will be available for purchase in the future! Thanks for watching!
Cool video guys. Aside from the TP, it's always great to watch Murray sharpen. Interesting to see him strop with newspaper for this test - I would have thought the micro-toothiness of the 6K grit King stone would have cut better than the more polished edge from the newspaper.
quit thinking about other people

@jlcinternet It makes no difference what brand of stones that you buy. It's the indian, not the arrow.

@slapthatmech News paper had clay and it helps polish the knife and make the burr smaller.

Hey maybe u could try loading the newspaper w/some compound. (chromium oxide, white chalk.)

Try TP that is less soft, public restroom TP would be on the extreme end. It would be a lot more like cutting printing paper.
