People always talk about Dusty's look. Hop your ass in the ring & go an hour + on the regular like he did back in the day. Most of the people who trash him wouldn't last 2 minutes w/o being gassed worse than Grandmaster Sexay when he finsihed his entrance to diss Lawler for Cole.
Wrestlers nowadays need to take notes. Dusty and Flair didn't have a million move arsenal and they didn't have to go for a dozen highspots in a match. They knew how to tell a story, and they knew how to make you believe that they hated each other. Nobody in this new era tells a story like these two.
2:00 just shows the class of entertainer. I mean clearly dusty was expecting to hit the guy. Ric flair sold instead. What does dusty do, he is not static not knowing what to do. He doesn't rush anywhere. He just rolls without like well I guess I didn't need the elbow.
I just don't see the WWE Championship changing hands as a result of an attempted body slam countered by a small package for the 1-2-3. Absolutely brilliant in its simplicity.
Dusty Rhodes made Ric Flair look great. Before there was Hulk Hogan, There was Dusty Rhodes who paved the wave for wrestling and guys like Ric Flair and Hulk Hogan.LONG LIVE THE DREAM!!!!!!!
dusty was probably the best interview ever, besides ric. that fairy (haha quite literally) the rock isn't in their league. and, despite only having the "bionic elbow", dusty was a great wrestler as well. and could even wrestle the whole 60 min. as they typically did in those days, despite his fatness...
actually, i was surprised to find this out, but dusty was a leading football and baseball player before he got into wrestling and he had a dual scholarship in texas and actually had top tier stats in both sports, even was invited to training camp with a few nfl teams. he just wanted to be a wrestler and turned down a deal with miami. then of course, he became a total fatass...
for sure. i recently bought a wwe triple pack dvd with rise and fall of wcw, mr. perfect documentary, and dusty rhodes story, and put off watching the rhodes dvd until just recently, was shocked to find out he was a standout athlete and in good shape at one time, but i guess he was a texan, and they live and die for football, so it makes sense.
@DJglasgowSon That was a damn good DVD. I think that is one of the most underated DVD's that the WWE has put out. I never realized how popular and how how Dusty was in the world of pro wrestling until watching that. Hell, he even to went to MSG three times and sold out the place with "Superstar" in three helluva great matches!
for sure. dusty was before my time, and the first i saw of him was as a wcw commentator. i went back to watch flair in his glory days and developed an interest in dusty. that video was probably the best wwe vid i've seen, besides maybe 'cause stone cold said so, which was insightful, and hilarious. the music and hay bales and everything in the dusty vid fit him perfectly, and the vid offered great insight into how he became a booker n all... winning various nwa titles 15+times...
Dusty Rhodes is and always will be a fatass, untalented, dumbass slob.He couldn't put asses in the seat unless the nature boy was on the card. The most over rated non athlete in wrestling.
im 23 years old and i can look back 20 30 years and we have these legends like ric dusty to name a few but wen my kids are in there 20s will they have such a rich selection of legends to learn about i dont think so and thats a real shame for the wrestling bidnes i hope im wrong but i dougt it
I totally agree. Break up the legends by time period and they pretty much fizzle out by the mid 90's. The last 10 years have produced great stars... but no legends
Your only saying that because i refused to have sex with you... please keep your personal dejection off of youtube where people come to watch videos... not get raped
i have to agree with you on Angle and Triple H, Austin had been wrestling since the 80's and The Rock will always be known for his mic skills, but i doubt many people will recall a great match that stands out in their mind. But alas i spoke out of turn with throwing that whole decade card out there
Best of the best ever on the mic 20-11: 20. Austin Idol 19. Big Cat Ernie Ladd 18. Curt Hennig Mr. Perfect 17. Road Warrior Hawk 16. Ole Anderson 15. Bruiser Brody 14. Tully Blanchard - the most underrated of the Four Horsemen 13. Chris Jericho/Rick Rude (tie) 12. Michael P.S. Hayes 11. Nick Bockwinkel Where's Hogan? Flair? Superstar? Hart? Savage? Jake the Snake?HBK? Scott Hall?Nash? Angle?..........Ahhhhhh all in time. I'm going to sleep, later today i post 10-1.
Tully was not better than Ole on the mic. Tully would often studder and lose himself...so he was mediocre at best. Ole was just so serious and made you believe...with his in-ring work and mic work.
I'm very comfortable with where I ranked Ole and Tully. Tully did not stutter on the mic. He was very underrated and very good on the mic and even better in the ring. Ole was also awesome on both ends.
Tully did not stutter? Are you kidding me?? Or maybe the term is "stammer" ..because you're thinking stutter in the "Bubba Dudley" sense. Tully did stammer at times, where he would screw up in mid-promo...I've watched this guy from Southwest to the WWF, you can't tell me that all of his promos were smooth as silk. I saw a Mid Atlantic promo with Tully & Wahoo (heel partners at the time) that was so bad, that I couldn't watch it all.
My list is solid. I wasn't looking for perfection. Also didn't expect everybody to agree with 1-20. I'm satisfied with the final product and where I have Tully and Ole. Next you'll swear on Bibles that Tully couldn't wrestle. I know this: The two greatest incarnations of The Four Horsemen both have Tully Blanchard in it. The Four Horsemen were NEVER the same once he left, no matter what combo they tried throwing together. You're not perfect and you shouldn't expect others to be.
I wouldn't "swear on bibles" about something ridiculous like that. Tully could wrestle, I know this. He was a ring general. I was only stating a fact, that the guy stammered in interviews. It's not my opinion, you should get some Mid Atlantic tapes and see for yourself. Tully played the heel role well, but he was the 4th best talker of the Original 4 Horsemen (my opinion). You're right about them never being the same once he left.
No you stated an opinion. The promos i saw, Tully was polished, arrogant and getting under the fans skin like a great heel is suppose to. And he always seemed to have gold around his waist so his mic skills and ring generalship must have been up to par. Who cares if he was the fourth best talker on the Horsemen. You got some all time mic guys in the Horsemen in Flair (1st), Arn(7th), Ole (16th and Tully (14th). He sure proved how indispensable he was when they couldn't replace Tully.
When we make these "Rank The Top 20 Blah Blah" lists...we already know in our minds that no one is perfect. But you also wouldn't put Gene Anderson in the Top 10 Promo guys of all time, now would you? You rank the individuals in order of who you think is better at that certain skill..but all the while KNOWING that none of them are perfect.
what made ric so good is he could sell an ass woopin meaning when his appoinett got the best of him or arn anderson also they would make it look like they got they world rocked worser than it appeared and we as fans fed off of that emotion which in turn wanting for us to see more of them getting they asses kicked! damn those were the days! wrestling will never be like that again! thank you wwe 4 fucking up what countless legends paved the way 4 these punks that call themselves wrestlers now!
I have heard that he was seriously over-hyped, especially after his programs with Flair ended. According to Street he was protected and I believe it. But a wrestler HAS to be a mark for themselves, if they aren't how is anyone else going to be?
@spanglehoff He was also the booker. He may have overdid the Dusty Finish and let his ego go crazy but then compare him to Vince Russo or comic fanboy in WWE.
The mutual respect amongst these two in real life is such a great thing to hear about. These two were legends because of exactly what Ric said... they bled, sweat, and breathed wrestling. Dusty and Ric was a classic as a rivalry as Yanks/Red Sox. The great part about it is that it's a dream for Ric, who got to have one of his greatest rivalries with his biggest influence of all time. If you have this dvd or watched it on 24/7, Ric himself states this fact, and watned to be Ramblin Ricky Rhodes.
I just got my HORSEMEN AUTOGRAPHED PICTURE COMPLETE with all the AUTOGRAPHS of RIC, TULLY, JJ DILLION, ARN and OLE.
I also got RIC FLAIR,TULLY (my favorite horsemen), ARN, OLE and JJ DILLION to sign my WWE AUTOGRAPHED WORLD TITLE BELT along with bob backlund and john cena.Check out my videos and rate please.
RIC AND DUSTY HAD ONE OF THE GREATEST FEUDS EVER!!!
ali vs frazier, flair vs rhodes these 2 phrases will 4ever b linked with each other. wrestling will never b da same as it was bak n da goddamn day!! vince mcmahon (however u spell his dam name) sr is probably turning over n his grave cause of wat jr has done 2 this im sry his sport. give me saturday morning wrestling bak n 84 85 86 87 any day of the week it was true and THAT (vince) is wat kept u entertained! not these idiots u hav running around doing bak flips and shit jumping off ladders wtf!
There will NEVER be another American Dream. He was the epitome of a great professional wrestler. He and Flair were the original trash talkers and could cut an impromptu 10 minute promo without a hitch. WWE sucks and will never touch the excitement and fun of the old school.
This was when wrestling was good. It didn't get any better than Flair vs. Rhodes at the Greensboro Coliseum when they came to town several times a year.
I haven't watched wrestling in like 15 years, but back the 80's I did not miss NWA ever, before that, GA Championship Wrestling! Wrestling is something that's just meant to be simple, and within the simplicity you can have these really creative characters like Flair and Rhodes. You don't get that nowadays. Jeez, I knew what was up with wrestling, but it didn't matter, I hated the 4 Horsemen! Sometimes they made me so damn mad I was pissed off all week!
RayNDeere, remember that Dusty promo where in mid speech, Baby Doll gave him an envelope? Dusty stopped talkin'. You know, what was in it? I'm saying the truth. What I can remember from Dusty's book; it was Dusty's pictuers. Him being goofy. I wish I could that promo. And yeah Flair & Dusty should be teachin' the young talent.
Hulk Hogan, like Goldberg, was more of a "manufactured" champion. Dusty had that true grit, realism about him!! And wow what a match...for someone fat and out of shape (supposedly) he could hang with the best of his time!!!!
PLEASE DON'T READ THIS you will die in seven days if you don't post this comment on 10 videos in the next hour. if you do, tommorrow will be the best day of your life
Man! Who could ever forget this match? One of the greatest EVER. Man, I got goosebumps! Makes me want to move back to the trailer park, and sit in the floor eating mac and cheeze out uf a Cool Whip bowl and watch rasslin on Channel 17 in Atlanta. WOOOOO!
This was also the days before these current roid monsters that pass for wrestlers. It's just so fucking ridiculous to watch these days. And too predictable, too.
u not dissen my road warrers r u ? cause those were my dogz baby. halk would beat the crap out of flair.
everybody in nwa was a promo king there weren't realy no bad wrestlers every body was great. when the went to wwe or f they got so corney. ok for example ronny garven "hands of stone" he was so wack he was a punk over there. over here he was the man. rick rude he was ok over wwe but over in georga he was the truth. even ric went over there he was wack over wwe.
Damn straight. I remember the old 7:05 TBS wrestling on Saturday night for 2 hours in the early to mid-80's. Boy, those were better than anything they got today...Probably because I was 9 or 10 and I still sorta thought it was real. :)
That's the Real Old School Wrestling. Flair an Rhodes could work the mic and the ring in any state at any time not just for a PPV. But the T.V. shows were just as good if not better than the PPV's man I miss those days.
All dez young cats need to remember one phrase! THE DIRTEST PLAYER IN THE GAME! Ask Race, Bockwinkle, Luger, Savage, Windem, Rude,Hall, Nash, The Von'Erichs, The Funks, The Ortens, The N.W.O. Steamboat and Hogan! Out PLAYEDEM and ,HELL even outliving some!
Dusty congratulated by none other then D.A.C.

Ric Flair and Dusty Rhodes should be teaching the current WWE wrestlers how to do a proper promo. They knew how to sell a match as the best match.

Dusty Rhodes--The American Dream......FUNKY LIKE A MONKEY TOUR '86. (If you don't have a monkey, get funky anyway).
Truly the best talker in the business....
Retrofan 4 years ago 3
You are right. Best talker=Dusty Rhodes. SEcond Ric Flair. WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
FlairChampion 4 years ago
Hogan is better of course, and Jake the Snake, Ric Flair, but Dusty was one of the best ever on the mic. But Hulk #1 !

Seeing Dusty Rhodes as a wrestler is an injustice but seeing as an human being is very great and i called him the Muhammad Ali of pro wrestling.

Dusty beat Flair in that match and had the belt about 2 weeks before the NWA went nuts and made him drop it back to Flair.

This was also the days before these current roid monsters that pass for wrestlers. It's just so fucking ridiculous to watch these days. And too predictable, too.
docmark72 5 years ago
u not dissen my road warrers r u ? cause those were my dogz baby. halk would beat the crap out of flair.
everybody in nwa was a promo king there weren't realy no bad wrestlers every body was great. when the went to wwe or f they got so corney. ok for example ronny garven "hands of stone" he was so wack he was a punk over there. over here he was the man. rick rude he was ok over wwe but over in georga he was the truth. even ric went over there he was wack over wwe.
allnightgymer 4 years ago
The real truth is Flair would carry Hawk and Dusty to great macthes.

Damn straight. I remember the old 7:05 TBS wrestling on Saturday night for 2 hours in the early to mid-80's. Boy, those were better than anything they got today...Probably because I was 9 or 10 and I still sorta thought it was real. :)

"diamonds are forever and so is ric flair"that line might be the best wrestling line ever
kozmo187 5 years ago
Its so true too:)

That's the Real Old School Wrestling. Flair an Rhodes could work the mic and the ring in any state at any time not just for a PPV. But the T.V. shows were just as good if not better than the PPV's man I miss those days.
