  • nice day in the city

  • 80 west to 580 or 880 big "S" curve . posted 55 but we all know big rigs have a CHP ok to go 64mph. At that area big propane crash .Was it 08 fuel tanker crash and freway down and had to be replace a section. I went by another big rig crash in late 09. Before the the grand av exit above the watest water treatment plant. How bad does it have to get before caltrans or CHP lowers the speed through there? And why do big rigs get a 10mph over posted speed grase limit?

  • Hey, thanks! That's exactly what I was hoping to find:

    A) video in lighted conditions

    B) narration-free

    C) realisitic speed

It's a legit problemo for sure.

  • it isnt bad, but everyone drives like 75 80 soo its pretty dangerous.

  • I thought everyone was just overreacting about this S curve until I took a trip on it. That thing is no joke. Its honestly kinda scary riding it, especially when everyone around you isn't driving the 40MPH. i guess I'll just have to take the San Mateo from now on.

  • that is probably the most frightening stretch of road I have ever seen. Why would God let something like that be on this Earth? I fear for us all.

  • driving out of SF is fine...going back to SF on the S-curve, thats fkng dangerous. Its sooo narrow, i dont know how a trailer can do it.

  • I have to say....growing up in NorCal, driving for 14 years, and 8 of those here in the bay area, this is a joke. I live and work in Marin County, so I maybe use the Bay Bride once a year or so. But I just got back from a combined 22-hour drive from Oregon. Lemme tell you, on I-5 - that mountainous stretch....they have radar signs showing you your speed and telling you to slow down...they have lights, they have flashing beacons...everything.....something Caltrans should think about.........

  • ironically enough, caltrains is also responsible for I-5! LOL! But the one problem with that is there's no room to place those signs, theres no curb or anything like on a street where they can just take up a parking spot.

  • Nice clear video illustrating the S-curve for non-locals... a good resource since this bridge is going to be in the news a lot.

A few factors that contribute to the danger are the lack of cambering (most curves are banked w/ the outer edge of roadway higher than the inside; the bridge deck is flat), the combo of narrow lanes + no shoulder, driver unfamiliarity, and of course...excessive speed.

Slow down & live... especially if you have a high center-of-gravity rig like a truck or loaded SUV.

  • Yes you are right, but the bridge can not be cambered like a normal surface road. I believe the drivers should drive with more caution and reduce the speed through the s turn. This is not the only danger spot in through this I80 improvement project. there are other spots that are just as dangerous on this coming into the central freeway.

  • oh, understood--I'm not suggesting they _should've_ cambered it, mind you--just pointing out a not-so-obvious reason it's more dangerous than it looks.

And yeah, the whole elevated hospital curve/b-bridge approach/central freeway tangle is one big danger zone... this is just the newest wrinkle :-D

  • I have the video of the s curve eastbound also for your viewing pleasure. somehow, the eastbound does not have as many accidents. probably because people have slowed down for the dark scary tunnel already before the S curve comes up. LOL

  • @wokkawicca

FYI, in the world of engineering, "lack of cambering" is called "superelevation".

  • Yeah, I saw a flashing light with s-curve sign also. People who can't handle this curve are either sleep, not paying attention, or semi-drunk.

  • i saw 2 40mph sign n 1 40mph on the road... maybe it needs to be in neon

  • this comment is not 4 the author... theres been 40 accidents in about th half a month... you stupid caltrans workers gotta stop blaming the drivers for the accidents & speeding... theres something wrong with the stupid curve put more signs up or close the bridge

  • Thanks for posting this. Hopefully people will slow down. Another semi truck went off the bridge this morning, killing the driver and landing 200 feet on the island below. Slow down people!

  • If you include the approaches on each end (which are shown in this video), the total length is 8.5 miles.

  • cool video.

  • The San Francisco-Oakland Bay bridge is 4.5miles long. The San Francisco Bay Bridge is the longest high-level, steel bridge in the world. The Yerba Buena Tunnel, which connect the two sections of the San Francisco Bay Bridge, is the tallest bore in the world, 76 feet wide and 58 feet tall.

  • Geez! How long is that darned bridge! It seems to go on forever.
