@readytoheaven in real life Andre was more like 6'11" or 7 feet tall right on the money, wrestling is well known for exaggerating a wrestler's height and weight especially back in those days
@greenwilly69 By the end of his career he was 7'4. Andre kept growing due to his Giantism (i Forget the real sceintific term). He may not have been that tall there, but by the end of his career he was really 7' 4. Most sources agree he genuinly was 7'4 at his peak. Unlike other Giant Wrestlers like the Big Show, who had his growth stopped. Andre never had the operation. So he did keep growing.
@gsingh96 as far as I know it was unscripted. From what I have read in books. it was on the same card as the Inoki-Ali fight whcih was also unscripted. Though Inoki was forced to practically wrestle on his back, because. Inoki had oriinally promised a worked (scripted) match. But It became clear Inoki wanted to really fight Ali, so the organisers but special rules in place that severly limted what both men could do. I ended in a draw if I remember right.
This fight was staged but if it was real Chuck wouldn't win. Why because Chuck Wepner is a fighter but he fights humans. Andre was a bear disguised as a human.
You know this is so staged and stacked for Andre. If it was real and Wepner wasn't wearing gloves, he would literally kill Andre. Any professional heavyweight would. People think because Andre is big he's some great fighter, he's not. If he was, Wepner wouldn't be wearing gloves and full punches. You saw how 140 Pound Mayweather broke 400+ pound Big Show's nose with a couple deliebrately weak punches. A full force punch from a heavyweight boxer would kill Andre the Giant.
@Rockyfan10060 gloves makes a fighter now?lol just answer this.If you happen to get hit by 7'0,400 + pound man who fist is the same size of your head with the velocity of even some HW boxers at that time (no Ali but still) you think you would still be standing after one punch, glove or not?
If Andre's hands were such a danger they would've been gloved. If Andre was good enough for really fighting Chuck, then they wouldn't have this screwy exhibition. No disrespect to Andre but he's a wrestler, not a boxer.
What does it matter if Big show knealt down? He still got his nose broken by a 140 pounder when he's 400 pounds, by a few light punches. That is a big feat. It just shows how fake "Big show" is as an athlete. He'd get beaten bad by a heavyweight.
HAHAHA! If Floyd mayweather let his hands down and you hit him, he'd laugh at you. He's one of the very best boxers of all time and you have the guts to think you could actually break his nose? You act like anybody can break someone's nose even if their outweighed by hundreds of pounds like it's no big deal.
Floyd is a phenomenal boxer. When he refuses to let people hit him and he hits them back, he does well.
If he stands still, closes his eyes, and lets a 220 pound man punch him in the nose, it will break.
He is not a mutant. He is not an android. He is a human being made of flesh and blood and bone, and if a large meaty object smashes clean into his nose, that shit is going to burst and he's gonna start leaking blood like a faucet.
You're not a professional fighter, nowhere enar it, I'm just assuming. Floyd is one of the greatest professional fighters who ever lived. The training it takes just to be a pro fighter is enormous, let alone one of the best whoever lived. Floyd rarely gets hurt bad even against other boxers, so the average person probably won't do much. Myabe if he was blind folded, not ready, and with no guard it would bleed, but it wouldn't hurt him.
What do you think? You think you can actually beat a pro boxer? Champions who train 10 hours a day and can run 8-9 miles for weeks for their fights? Sparring and working everyday with real fighters? That is what makes them harder to hurt than just any random guy.
I'm not capable of thought? You're the Youtube nobody who thinks he could break Mayweather's nose "hard and flush" when you've probably never boxed before in your life. It's called sparring. It toughens your body, training toughens your body, FIGHTING your entire life toughens your body. Learn more about boxing and you'll see this. Do you think you could break Mike Tyson's jaw too? The training that champion boxers go through is unbelievably difficult. They can't be judged like an average man.
@Rockyfan10060 And still, you've YET to explain to me how a person conditions their nose to not be broken when thick heavy objects smash into it
Let me clarify the point for you: Breaking someone's nose when they let you punch them in the nose is not an accomplishment, and anyone receiving it would have their nose broken.
The reason is rather obvious. A sport like boxing, where all you do is train and fight and work to beat up other people for a living dramatically increases your capablilities of pain tolerance, strength, speed, everything, especially at the pro level, and far more at the level of one of the greatest of all time. Your logic is ridiculous. You act like you break the nose of anybody if they stood still. Can a 10 year old break big show's nose too? You have to box to get it.
Boxer's can get thier noses broken by OTHER FIGHTERS, and in Floyd's case it would have to be a pretty good fighter. That's what I've been arguing. I never said nobody living could. I said the average man. You seem to think that you can break a boxer's nose when you've probably never fought before. That's what I've been debating. The normal guy won't hurt hurt a champion boxer if he hits them. You might bloody them if they leave themselves wide open, but hurt, no. And bloody not a lot.
Of course it was just an exhibition. In fact if you watch when Andre tosses Chuck over the ropes, Chuck's foot get tangled in the ropes and Andre quickly untangles his foot so he doesn't get hurt.
I don't think this fight was fake Chuck was really leaning into his punches. Andre was over 400lb and could really take a shot. Thanks for posting..cheers
@fuggetabodit You really think this is real???? i disagree. i thot the same with the punchs but watch andre's head butt. and would a wrestler just take him down and pound on him?? Ya this was definently staged for profit. or fixed in SOME way
@DrDeeAye So many people here see what they wish to see. They get caught up in what they view as the "fakeness" of wrestling and assume right from the start that anything with a pro wrestler in it is automatically fake, the headbutt is fake because you WANT the headbutt to be fake because that's what wrestling is. Here the narrator and Wepners own people are saying this was real, yet still you choose not to believe it, and the only way to convince you otherwise would be to make you Wepner
@FerretJohn Real fighters have a reputation for not being able to throw good fake punches. If I remember correctly, Floyd Mayweather accidentally broke the Big Show's nose in what was supposed to be a staged confrontation.
Honestly, all that stuff you said about wishing to see something can easily be applied to you. You see the headbutt as real because you WANT to see it as real, even though anybody with eyes can tell it's fake.
The boxer vs wrestler matches were basically MMA. The fights weren't 'fake'. Now when wrestlers fight other wrestlers in wrestling matches its another story.
@JonLambert89 Ali vs. Inoki was real (Albeit with very restrictive rules). Wepner vs. Andre is clearly fake, though. Some of Wepner's punches seemed to have some sting, but that's probably because he's not used to pulling his punches and maybe was trying to make it look real.
You can clearly see at around :13 that the 6'6" Wepner was 6-7" shorter than Andre. I never believed the 7'4"-7'5" listings for Andre--that was just for publicity, but he was a 7 footer or slightly more.
This is so clearly a staged fight. Are there any *real* wrestler vs boxer matches other than Inoki vs Ali!? Seriously all the so called proto mma boxer vs wrestler matches from this era i can find are just staged pro wrestling with a boxer! Its no different then when Mike Tyson appeared in WWE!
This was scriped but I believe Wepner was actually hitting André and it must've pissed André up enough that he lifted and threw him after landing on him
Other people have noted this, but it bears repeating: Andre was billed as 7'4" tall, and for this fight at 7'5", but Wepner at 6'6" is only about 4 or 5 inches shorter than Andre. Andre was really about 6'11" or slightly taller, which is why you never saw him posed next to NBA players like Wilt Chamberlain, Manute Bol or Kareem, so as not to destroy the illusion that Andre was 7'4". Good thing Andre never met Jorge (Giant) Gonzalez - he was 7'7" legitimately!
@elc1960 I'd say you're about right. Andre at his PEAK barefoot height was probably 7' or 7'1. In pro wrestling it is common to include non barefoot stats. Also, Andre's back was constantly under great strain and as he grew heavier, his massive vertebrae were undoubtedly compressed as he aged. Maybe in his younger days he hit the 7' range. Google "Andre Arnold Wilt Chamberlain" for a pic of Andre standing in a photo with the 7'1 Chamberlain and appearing an inch or two shorter.
At least Wepner landed some good punches that could could have done some damage and hurt Andrea if wearing the traditional MMA gloves or no gloves against Andrea . It's been proven from Lebell VS Savage to the first UFC that most Judo, BJJ , Grapplers are dominent over Boxers/Kickboxers . Some like Crocop , ans other K-1 and boxers like Jeremy Williams , Butterbean have had some success in MMA , and hopefully we can see more .
@Jnes01 fake my butt, no script to this fight, you fight a man who is 7'5 and 460 pounds and then ask yourself if its going to be a fair fight, its like fighting a mountain gorilla, don't live in denial, ain't nothing fake about fighting a human being that is like a mack truck in both size and strength.
@kalai131 it was undoubtedly faked,no full headshot landed and there was no groundwork, the 2 things that are absolute certainties in real matches, especially when 1 is wearing boxing gloves. The headbutt was very obviously faked, you cannot headbutt another person in the forehead and not cause damage to both of you, have you any idea how much blood there would be from a hit like that.
@ChujCiWJedzenie I agree. Look at how Wepner is hitting Andre at 1:10 - no pro boxer would punch like that. He was obviously trying not to hurt Andre.
@sbtbfanatic: Or maybe because he can't hit him anywhere else as his wide shoulders are protecting his body and because Andre's head is down, Wepner can't hit him in the conventional way.
@ChujCiWJedzenie yeah like a human being could knock down a grizzly bear, andre was fucking ridiculously huge, the size of a fucking bear, and could take a hit, dude, his body and bones were so thick he was built like a tank, you must have never fought a huge freak in a fight, believe me, I have and hitting them is not like hitting an average joe, its like fighting a wild animal.
Andre Heart of the Giant DVD the only film that's not a documentary about Andre the Giant is available now google search Tin Rain Industry for all the info.
Well Chuck seemed to be giving it his all and yet got his ass picked up and thrown out the ring effortlessly by the "out of shape" Andre so there!!! And remember - Andre isn't even allowed to REALLY hit him as is Chuck. I reckon if he had of done he would of knocked Chuck's head off - but could be wrong!
To set the record straight. Hogan was once a solid 6'6" man. Since 1990, he has undergone MANY back surgeries. He had his neck fused. He had multiple knee replacements and 2 complete hip surgeries. Because of all of this AND age, he is now 6'3". ANDRE at his peak was 6'11"-7'0". When he died, he was 6'9"-6'10", due to his horrendous posture and the breaking down of his body. END OF STORY.
This wasn't real. That headbutt by Andre would have broken Chuck's face. The fact that Chuck doesn't know how to sell any of the moves actually makes it look more legit. A 'rassler would be squirming and making faces but Chuck keeps right on pretending to punch Andre. Then when he gets tossed, he grabs the ropes to break his fall whereas a wrestler would have sold that throw all the way to the floor. So now you know.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
His actual height was around 6'9" and weighed around 310 lbs. When he hooked up with Vince McMahon they increased his billed height to 7'4" and weight upwards of 450. All for promo.
I love Andrew the Giant! He was over 6ft tall and almost 300 lbs! When he beat Hank Hogan to successfully retain his title at Wrestling Mania 30 in front of that small crowd at the Hoosier Dome, it was one of the best wrestling moments of the 90's! I'm glad Andrew is still wrestling!
I'm not familiar with the book, but if it was written during Andre's lifetime, that was still during the era of kayfabe where wrestling supposedly real. Most of the fight looks legitimate but when does anyone break out a headbutt in a straight fight. And even if they do they did, they wouldn't put there thumb over the point of impact.
Sigh.....so many people....can't bother to do 2 seconds of research. Wepner WAS the inspiration for the Rocky character originally. This is well known.

@Jnes01 fake my butt, no script to this fight, you fight a man who is 7'5 and 460 pounds and then ask yourself if its going to be a fair fight, its like fighting a mountain gorilla, don't live in denial, ain't nothing fake about fighting a human being that is like a mack truck in both size and strength.
kalai131 1 year ago
@kalai131 it was undoubtedly faked,no full headshot landed and there was no groundwork, the 2 things that are absolute certainties in real matches, especially when 1 is wearing boxing gloves. The headbutt was very obviously faked, you cannot headbutt another person in the forehead and not cause damage to both of you, have you any idea how much blood there would be from a hit like that.
billysue2 1 year ago
@Jnes01 agree, that headbutt looked like something from a pantomime

Wepner was one tough fucker.
The guy had horrible technique and you wondered what the hell is he doing in the ring, but Chuck was tough.
mrceebees14 1 year ago
at 1:31 you can see andre do his patented headbutt to wepner. too bad andre blocked it with his hand, but wepner still sold it.

if chuck would hit andre FOR REAL with power he would knock him down with no problem
ChujCiWJedzenie 1 year ago
@ChujCiWJedzenie I agree. Look at how Wepner is hitting Andre at 1:10 - no pro boxer would punch like that. He was obviously trying not to hurt Andre.
sbtbfanatic 1 year ago
@sbtbfanatic: Or maybe because he can't hit him anywhere else as his wide shoulders are protecting his body and because Andre's head is down, Wepner can't hit him in the conventional way.
kanenkitten 1 year ago
WEPNER DID HIT ANDRE FOR R EAL AND HE COULDN'T HASE HIM YOU'RE MIISNFORMED!
oldschool6804 1 year ago
@ChujCiWJedzenie yeah like a human being could knock down a grizzly bear, andre was fucking ridiculously huge, the size of a fucking bear, and could take a hit, dude, his body and bones were so thick he was built like a tank, you must have never fought a huge freak in a fight, believe me, I have and hitting them is not like hitting an average joe, its like fighting a wild animal.

Gotta love how the Manager said of the wrestlers, and Gorilla Monsoon "you couldn't move these guys".

That was well done. Not to expose the fact that they were not going at it for real. I would have liked it to see Andre punch the guy, though.

If this was a true boxing match, Chuck would of knocked the shit out of the fat and out of shape Andre. He would of cut him to ribbons.
RangerRob2009 2 years ago

Danimal77 2 years ago
This wasn't real. That headbutt by Andre would have broken Chuck's face. The fact that Chuck doesn't know how to sell any of the moves actually makes it look more legit. A 'rassler would be squirming and making faces but Chuck keeps right on pretending to punch Andre. Then when he gets tossed, he grabs the ropes to break his fall whereas a wrestler would have sold that throw all the way to the floor. So now you know.
bigpoopie69 2 years ago
he really punched andre you're wrong that was real!

His actual height was around 6'9" and weighed around 310 lbs. When he hooked up with Vince McMahon they increased his billed height to 7'4" and weight upwards of 450. All for promo.
calientea2003l 2 years ago
andre the giant in under 7 foot tall, his height was grossly exadurated to make it seem like he was a giant
dudeslove 2 years ago
Andre was 7'4?
He looks nowhere near 7'4 in that video. Wepner's around 6'5, Andre looks like he's around 7'0 at the most.
I've seen Tim Duncan (6'11) and Yao Ming (7'6) and you can definitely see a massive size difference.

So was this the inspiration for the Rocky fight with hulk?
IvanDrago187 2 years ago
@IvanDrago187
Yes it was. Plus, Wepner vs. Ali inspired Stallone to write the screenplay for the first movie.
bigpoopie69 2 years ago
Likely. Since Wepner was the inspiration for Rocky.

wmlr1234 2 years ago
In Andre's book it states it was a real match (I guess the first real MMA match)
kanenkitten 2 years ago
I'm not familiar with the book, but if it was written during Andre's lifetime, that was still during the era of kayfabe where wrestling supposedly real. Most of the fight looks legitimate but when does anyone break out a headbutt in a straight fight. And even if they do they did, they wouldn't put there thumb over the point of impact.
wmlr1234 2 years ago
maybe he was headbutting his thumb bones into the skull?
kanenkitten 2 years ago
it was a legitimate fight and the andre book was written recently not while he was alive you are misinformed! before you comment do oyur research!
oldschool6804 2 years ago 2
Actually the book was written post-humously, long past the era of kayfabe
kanenkitten 2 years ago
Good Point.
I even noticed how Andre threw Wepner outta the ring, Just like how Thunder Lips did to Rocky.
AlohaRebel808 2 years ago
Wepner WAS the inspiration for Rocky. Stallone undoubtedly got the wrestler idea from this.
datacipher 2 years ago 13
Sigh.....so many people....can't bother to do 2 seconds of research. Wepner WAS the inspiration for the Rocky character originally. This is well known.
datacipher 2 years ago 2
@datacipher
You are wrong. Rocky was based on the cartoon. Rocky and Bullwinkle. Stallone said so himself. Got it?
