I thought this tribute was wonderful. So many champions - gone far too soon. Sadly, except for Phar Lap, I have been witness to all of the others' deaths. Young lives, horses and jockeys, have passed by too quickly. Thank you for such a beautiful rememberance.
I think this video should be dedicated to all the race horses who needlessly have lost their lives because of the race track. Too many are just thrown away because they just don't want to run, or are not fast enough. 1000 horses a week are processed through slaughter houses, the majority being off the track race horses. I myself have an off the track race horse who was bones when I got her. She was not fast enough, so she did not get fed. Stop the abuse, stop the slaughter. Thank-you.
THE OWNERS LOVE THERE RACING HORSES AS THERE FAMILY, SURE THEY MAKE MONEY OFF THE GREAT ONES, SO DOES OTHER ATHLETES MAKE BIG BUCKS IN THERE DIFFERENT SPORTS, THEY ARE WELL TAKEN CARE OF, THERE HEARTS BREAK WHEN SOMETHING HAPPENS TO THERE HORSES, AND THE RIDERS BREAK DOW ALSO WHEN SOMETHING HAPPENS TO THE RACE HORSE THEY RIDE, ANY PERSON IN RACING WILL TELL YOU THERE HEARTS BREAK ALL THE TIME WHEN SOMETHING DRASTIC HAPPENS..............................................
Used to love racing. From age of 5 went to the track and stood at the rail to feel the thunder as they came down the stretch. Now 55, can't watch anymore. Too many "catastrophic injuries". Now I retrain ex-racers to jumpers and have seen damage that starting at 2 does to legs over long-term. Racing is money-horses are used and abandoned. My German jumpers aren't backed until age 4 or 5 and they maintain soundness for many more years than TBs.
Im from OZ, this song is perfect for all of the horses that have passed on, I really only new about OZ horses like Phar Lap ( He was poisoned by accident or on purpose probaly will never know) But America has had some real champs like Seabiscuit, Ruffian, Secretariat, Go for Wand, Eight Bells etc etc. And I agree the owners are in it for the money. As for the Jockeys, most of them are fine, its the poor horses that usually suffer.
poor ruffian i bet she was in so much pain i think the best thing they can do was put her down on the track right then and there because she was in so much pain trying to move her i think they were selffish to do that
@MegaHorseracer Thank you for these postings,i was beginning to think that i was far too sentimental as i pity these wonderful animals when profit comes before pain.I feel angry when i see the Grand National, the Cheltenham Festival and the ensuing carnage.Twelve horses died at Cheltenham one year.Try to find a documentary called "They shoot horses don't they?"-its was made several years ago.Its nauseating to watch but it describes the callous indifference of many involved in racing.
Respond to this video. Two year olds are described as toddlers due to their gangly undeveloped bodies but shown waiting to be slaughtered when they are slow to show promise.
I would like to add the tragic Shergar to the list, taken by IRA gunman from his box with the intension of holding him to ransom, unfortunately the unruly thoroughbred was too difficult to handle and was shot. His body was never found,His lad claims that he has seen the ghostly horse in his paddock.
What's really sad about this... is that the oldest horse among the five was just 4 years old. Didn't start riding my horse until she was 2, 2 1/2. Not supposed to jump them until about 5 or 6. They aren't meant to race at break neck speeds... on legs that aren't yet fully developed.
why would some want to ruin something so beautiful some race horse owners may say they love the horse but i dont see how when they send them through that =[ when i was little i wanted to do that but when i learned how horrible it is i changed my mind
I think it was sad that Eight Belles broke down and was euthanized before the owner and trainer knew..but unfortunatly in some states that is the rule.If your horse gets injured on the track, then the attending veterinarian has the right to euthanize the horse without your consult...Great video...i agree these horses left us way too soon..and I cried when Pine Island broke down..she was a spitting image of Ruffian
@MrNonch1 No, you're not. If you had a decent bone in your body, you wouldn't bet on these poor animals. The more idiots, excuse me, people, bet on them, the more trainers will race them at a ridiculously young age and the more horses will die. I have zero sympathy for your stupid betting woes, moron. See if you can grow a heart soon.
@horseA123 Do I detect a "non-sequetur" here? How can me betting on Jumping horses aged between 4-12 have anything to do with 2 year olds? The equine profession is happy that 2 year olds are physiologically developed enough to race, that's good enough for me. I suspect you're a bit of a go-getter...so would suggest you go-getter bit of logic, go-getter bit more knowledge- and then go-getter life, and stop looking even more stupid than nature intended you to be.
@MrNonch1 First of all, it is spelled non sequitur and your use of the term is completely ignorant and incorrect. If you are betting on jumping horses that are 4-12 yrs old, why are you commenting on THIS video when the majority of these horses are racing thoroughbreds who died at age 3? I suspect you're a bit of an ass. I also suspect that I can't possibly make you look more stupid than nature already has.
Maybe it's an American English use of the word, but doesn't 'euthenized' imply some level of consent on the part of the creature that is being killed? How the devil can a horse consent to its destruction?
@jarvsie IF a horse is shot does it feel pain.?Then of course its off to the pet food manufacturers or to Japan for the table,or France /Italy /Belgium in Europe.
Its because they start racing them when thier 2 instead of waiting till they are 4 because pople just want to prove that thier the best most dont even care about the horse cause I ride at a farm and iv seen 1 die because they didnt even care
And guess what? Let's say a foal is born December 31st, the next day he is considered a yearling and so the next year he would begin racing when he was only one year old!
Thanks for doing this tribute with such class. These horses would've lived long lives if not for the intervention of money hungry human beings. Any story about any thing on this planet will inevitably have a human being that brings the story to a pathetic end.
tampaslice, you simpleton...these horses would not have been born without the desire of money hungry humans for horse racing.Did this not occur to you?
Jarvsie you stupid piece of shit. Do you understand now . Get fucking lost already if you don't like horse's fuck off. Hey Donkey or piece of shit whatever you are get on and get a fucking life and if you don't maybe it would be time for you to end your life you piece of horse shit.
@horseygal235 you did great! Most people don't remember Phar Lap, but I do! All of them were great horses and I only wish God wouldn't have taken them so quickly. But we'll see all five later on when we go to heaven
This is so touching! I cried through the whole thing. The song Heaven really fits. R.I.P beauties! May you run forever in Heaven, with angles and God and Jesus on your backs!
And BTW, Phar Lap's life was much more valuable than his owner...his owner's life was expendable. I don't believe humans who kill their pets or race horses are worth anything...they are called criminals..I'd actually pay to watch them suffer...animals are innocent...people are not.
I wish someone had poisoned Phar Lap's owner...he deserved death for his greed and disregard to this magnificent animal. No human's life is more valuable than an innocent animal...in fact, it's worth much less.
Great vid! I wish horses didn't break down. Then there would be so many champions still alive. Sadly, that's not how the world works. If I controlled the world, the only way anyone or anything would die would be of old age, in their sleep. Everyone would live a long life and not have to see anyone or anything be killed or die from a disease or injury. It would be great. But God knows what he's doing. Every time something bad happens, something good comes out of it.
i wish that could happen too but God always will have something planned for everyone. I wish Barbaro wouldn't have died I loved him but I do wish I had owned him. He was so pretty.
@bigspaz3 same here but say if something good happened to some one cuz a poor horse had to go through that then its not good. i wouldnt want happiness from some oneelse's pain and misery =[
@LilMidna13 Well what I meant by that was things like with Ruffian. When she started running while waking up, people got the idea for a pool to put the horse in, and that worked for Barbaro until he got laminitis.
@bigspaz3 oh, yea your right with some things. like if they hadnt taken my sisters dog (who passed away from some unknown reason) and er...disect her.. =[ they would have never known it was antifreeze
@bigspaz3 Yes, breakdowns are heartbreaking and gutwrenching. But even worse is the reality of the hundreds of thousands of racehorses that are slaughtered every year for being too slow. These are perfectly sound and healthy horses who are just thrown out because the industry overbreeds them by the thousands in the hopes of finding the next Secretariat. I wish the media would focus on the awful truth and force a massive change in favor of saving lives instead of making money. Fat chance.
@organics4me I agree completely. The people who are in it purely for profit are just disgusting, and never seem to notice that the best horses always come from stables that care for the horses. The unfortunate ones that are slaughtered show how greedy and heartless people become when they focus on making money. I wish people would realize that the horses are living creatures too, and have just as much right to a happy life as humans have.
