I used to make the rounds in nyc with rodney to all the jams. The jazz cultural theatre, even the blue note which was hosted by ted curson who worked with mingus. Lonnie plaxico, the harper bros, the haines bros and of course various and sundry great players. The great Barry Harris headed the JCT. Five dollars got you into a fantastic world. Steve coleman,Cassandra Wilson.
when I was a kid, I learned to listen to this music, and it is not about listening faster, you must just close your eyes and like a complex piece of art, you must let your mind ease into what is happening. The trouble here is that like fast food, you just want empty calories to fill your mental belly so you can go to sleep. This music(art) has depth, nutrition, roughage, and everything your brain needs to deepen its learning curve, to broaden its ability to understand and assimilate your world.
@soulmambo "listening to something" does not mean just to hear it playing. just closing your eyes will not help if you do not understand, e.g. the beat, not to speak of the harmonics. in order to stick with your food-metaphor: "digesting" this kind of music involves a LOT of hard work.

the notes/melodies in jazz are so meaningless, there is nothing to create a vibe or feeling, just lots of randomness and skimming over any notes that are in scale, i guess u can appreciate the skill but the actuall music is like back ground elevator music, it doesn't grap you with anything interesting or powerfull. i guess that is the idea huh!
Just asking...You can't hear the melody on this song? THE PIANO AND SAX HAS THE MELODY. You can't get the vibe of this song? THE DRUMS AND EVEN THE LEFT HAND ON THE PIANO ARE SETTING THE VIBE. Do you consider anything without vocals background music...? THESE ARE JUST QUESTIONS I AM NOT TRYING TO PUT YOU DOWN.
I understand how u feel. But you have to listen faster. Its about the interaction between the musiicans, which is a beautiful thing. Its music about music. Tension and release dig?? solid.
@thispagesux I thought same thing 15 years back, I thought back then that jazz was boring, totally boring, meaningless. 15 years passed and... I'm totally, I mean TOTALLY hooked on jazz, I'm obsessed with it to say the least. How come?? I dunno... Honestly, I do not have a clue at all...
@Mordain607 by the amount of negative votes, its clear that people have assumed i came here to troll! i clicked on this page because i thought this was dave gilmore from pink floyd. i had a listen and gave an honest opinion. the comments section is for peoples views good or bad. if these guys dont want to hear critizism i suggest they try living in north korea where people are shit scared to have an opinion. i never said this was rubbish, i just appreciate melodies that carry a vibe or emotion!
I was just giving a counter-opinion. I do think you're opinion is a bit poorly informed though. I was just saying not all jazz is about soloing - though admittedly some jazz does suffer from just being a vehicle to solo.
The problem I have though, is it seems like you haven't heard much Jazz as you assume all jazz is just soloing. Plus, I was also just giving an opinion...
@thispagesux That's the thing, man:) You appreciate "melodies" that carry the vibe and emotion ON THE LEVEL YOU CAN UNDERSTAND. Jazz is as emotional, as it is INTELECTUAL. Sorry. You should expand your horizons, bro, befor you give such a "wise" opinion.
@thispagesux Listen to more jazz if you think that it doesn't grab you with anything interesting or powerful. Try listening to Nardis by Bill Evans. Or Take Five by Dave Brubeck.

agreed that a lot of jazz is about 1000 notes-a-minute and ice-cold, but this one's still orite.

Do not agree. There is a lot of composed jazz. Although a lot is about soloing, expressive soloing does exist.

Also, the Pink Floyd guy is David GilMOUR.
