Such a waste, the food and the hard drives I can understand but the movies could be saved and the electronics could be fixed up or used for the parts. And what was wrong with the stuffed toys and the NY Jets helmet?
Not just rap cd's, but all of the cd's of todays modern rubbish tuneless toneless horrible music. Music that is done by people with absolutely no talent at all. Put all the cd's in and it's good riddance to bad rubbish.
@sidewayznut2009 well i dont see any other countries doing so either.. Do you hear about the UK or China donating anything to the less fortunate? <.< How about Russia? Germany? Italy? i dont think any states or countries donate anything.. [that helps that much]
This company is pretty tight ass. Were is the bin under the stredder. There is trash all over the floor, that means they will have to use a bobcat or someone to clean that up, so that equalls more time, and more money
When Osma Bin Laden get's caught i would LOVE to see him thrown into this Death Chamber but i would slow down the cranks a wee bit just for him , i think it would be more exciting than flying planes into buildings, what do you say people thumbs up ?
Do people not understand that shredding does NOTHING to reduce volume? So when perfectly good products and clothes (that could be used by those less fortunate) are shredded and end up in a landfill, they take up the same exact amount of space that they would have to begin with.
@prorobo shredding does alot to reduce volume. Try it yourself. Go out in the mud, make round balls of it and let them dry. then put them in a container of some sort and see how much space they take up. Then stomp on them or smash them in the container, now measure the space taken up. Shredding increases the density of the shredded objects, thereby reducing the size they take up, since they weigh the same. I hope you understand.
#1: reduces material into easier to process pieces
#2: reduces volume by reducing air space between objects (branches going through a chipper are a great example)
#3: prevents reuse.
#3 sounds bad, but often companies are forced to shred things because of reasons such as a defect, confidential material, tax reasons, or something that they cannot warranty but would cause harm.
This is terrible. Why aren't these "perfectly good" products being re-used. Humans are already producing too much stuff, filling landfill and causing pollution. And you're destroying perfectly good shoes, while people in some countries can't even afford them. You should be ashamed.
I used to do removals for some time and it would happen on a regular basis that companies would ask us to get rid of stuff almost brand new just because they bought newer stuff. big companies care for profit and nothing else - even when they donate they do that to create a better image of the company and that means more profit. the long term effect? 1% of Earth's population has 40% of all the money, 10% holds 90% of it. what a fun system...
You don't have to call me monster, I'm not. I dont know all the costs associated with donating and transporting these items, if they were to be donated. And no, I would not give a broken computer to anyone but if it works fine, why not?
I recently saw a documentary here in Europe about shredding brand new electronics.
The thing is that the manufacturer says it are old models and may not be sold any more not even against heavily reduced prices because that would damage their reputation and brand name !
Clothing usually goes to Africa but the brand labels have to be cut out of the cloths.
I wonder if there really was anything "outdated, defective, [or] returned" about the oversized stuffed animal -- about anything in the video -- or if this was simply wasteful entertainment.
it's sad that we live in such a wasteful society.. and that when it comes to big companies everything is about money! recalled/unsafe or contaminated things that's different, but why do some places destroy returned items?? shameful

@Gbust2000 ok they are paying them to destroy it thats the point.
And I'm sure they don't shred shit at min wage its probably expensive like alot more than the price of the thing they are shredding
All I'm saying just give it away. And alot of countries give more percentage wise than the U.S. on a individual level.

Shredding serves three purposes:
#1: reduces material into easier to process pieces
#2: reduces volume by reducing air space between objects (branches going through a chipper are a great example)
#3: prevents reuse.
#3 sounds bad, but often companies are forced to shred things because of reasons such as a defect, confidential material, tax reasons, or something that they cannot warranty but would cause harm.
demonxanthwataru 2 years ago 2
Everything Decays over some period of time. And you can greatly shorten that time by reducing the material to the smallest possible size.
So rather than give everybody some SARS infested clothes, they get shreddered.

METH3454 2 years ago
It helps recycling, those machines do a necessary work, yes.
The Problem is society itself, Products are too short lived.
A then super high tech steam engine from 1790 would be used for 50-100 years.
And it was repaired, over and over again.....
Not nowadays.
Thats whats called corporate intrests and stock market.
Destroy stuff to produce more of it
so our society can rely on larger than natural production and growth
We need a society that is sustainable at ZERO growth.

rocketmagnet 2 years ago
Perhaps because some of these perfectly good products may not be so good if you have a chance to scrutinize them.
These products were being destroyed for a good reason, such as, say, a toaster oven that has lived its useful life (in other words, it's broken).
So, what are the alternatives? Store them away or throw them away?
You may as well shred them. A lot of those materials can be recycled as opposed to being thrown away into landfills or incinerators.
Watcher3223 2 years ago
Listen to what the guy said more closely:
"Stuff you think is perfectly good we destroy here because companies send it to us after its lifetime is used up."
