I LOVE THIS MOVIE SO DARN MUCH! XD I used to have it on VHS when I was little. Then had it on DVD. Now I'm 18, and STILL LOVING IT! XD
In fact, I JUST finished watching it on DVD as I typed this message! ^^
Blow Me Down, Everything Is Food, I Am What I Am, I'm Mean, and Popeye The Sailor Man are my favorite music in this heart-felting, adventurous, one of the most underrated movies ever made in America! <3
Please Thumbs Up so I know you STILL LOVE THIS MOVIE even now! ^^
I love this film.I saw it at the theater when it came out, have it on DVD now,and have the soundtrack record(which saddly omits this track). At times, certain songs, it reminds me of Fiddler on the Roof.
This movie is actually very deep. In this song, it's saying everything is food which gives a hint to what the movie is about. Most key figures have names of food like Swee' Pea and Olive Oyl. Popeye's father one time commented on their names by saying it reminded him of a salad. Popeye hates spinach, but it's a key to the characters development. Olive oil goes with sweet peas as well as spinach. By popeye accepting spinach he accepted his destiny to become a complete man and have a family.
One morning my 1st and 2nd grade boys were really grumpy getting ready for school, so I had an idea. I pulled this video up on the laptop and showed it to them. At first they were like, "What the heck is this?" Then by the end of the song, they were laughing and wide awake. It became a morning tradition to show them clips from Popeye before school.
Wimpy used to have another schtick in the comics. When he'd annoyed everyone so much that they were about to pound him, he'd calm things by inviting everyone over to his place for a roast duck dinner. Then, when he was almost out of earshot, he'd add 'You bring the ducks!'
I found this movie in the bargain bin for 4 bucks at Target, and I must say - this shouldn't at all be in the bargain bin, it's too good of a movie. I saw Robin Williams and I was saying "WTF?! Robin Williams plays POPEYE!!?! This I gotta buy!"
@Linksmashedmyjars And only a nickel, too! Them was the days.... *sigh*
Elzie Segar would be proud of this movie. There's a thousand and one little details in every shot just like his original Thimble Theater comic strip where Popeye got started.
I watched this movie hundreds of times when I was sprout, watched it again recently and was amazed how brilliant the film it truly is..Robin Williams was/is a genius actor and the writing and dialogue is hilarious..I made my 12 year old neice watch it and she loved it!!!! MB
Everything is food, food, food Everything is food to go Everything is food for thought Everything you knead is dough It is food Everything is food Everything is meat, meat, meat Careful what you put on your feet Once it lived on an animal Now it walks along with you It could be food Food, food, food It is food Everything is food Everything is upside down now Everything is sunny side up
This is one of those movies about a cartoon character that they found the right actors to play the characters. Don't see that much anymore. And they even added in characters from the old comic books
@clinch44 Yeah it is impressive. What pisses me off is that its so underated and it got bad reviews on IMDB etc. Wonder why? Id love to see more movies done like this, where there is more care than CGI! :) Great original music as well!
I just wonder: are the stupid people who didn't iike this video just stupid or is it me? If you don't like something, don't watch it. just keep being stupid.
My parents took us to see this in the theater and I couldn't follow it or understand what they were saying... i watched it last night with my kids and not only caught every word but thought it brilliant.. they captured the essence of the cartoon.
After seeing POTC and then coming back and watching this, the guy at the bar who can't seem to get to his drink I can imagine that is Captain Jack Sparrow thanks to the Fountain of Youth. :P
one of my all time favorite films,,,,,,truly magical...seen at least 3 times in theaters, at it's time of release (big screen viewing, magnificent)..many more times with kiddos, VHS......could never tire of it.....
@gooddarkjedi anti-tax??? where the hell you get that garbage from? these bastards are taxing the middle class out of existence. by 2016 there will only be the super rich and the super poor in america. we will be a third world country! fuck everything! fuck obama! fuck the cfr! fuck the feds! fuck the irs! fuck'em all! bunch of gawdamn devils!
How did Bluto get grilled chicken and everyone else had to get a hamburger? Reminds me of the government. They take the juicy stuff for themselves and give us leftovers. Man, I'm getting hungry watching this. Hey, essexboi1993, I'll gladly pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today. LOL.
Yes, "Oliver!" has "Food, Glorious, Food" which has a similar theme. It is also about how the rich get all the great food while the orphan boys are stuck with gruel.
Like this song, can't help but listen to when I turn on my computer, recently just watched the movie again. haven't seen it in liket ten years. It was awesome, just blown away, I was impressed
Robin Williams hated making this film. He has said it is the main reason why he has never directed. He says it would be too awkward to tell another actor who to play a scene.........because he would always imagine the other actor saying "oh yeah! how about Popeye?"
Wimpys the Man he was either Popeye's or Bluto's sidekick. That guy will do ANYTHING for a burger. What was Bluto eating it look liked a rib or a leg of a large creature? When he grunted it sounded like feeding time at the zoo.
I don't know what exactly it is, but every song from this movie is oddly depressing. No matter how upbeat or whimsical the song is supposed to be, it sounds like it's better suited for a funeral.
One thing always stand out about this film... it has an anti-tax theme throughout...tthat was the public sentiment at the time... we were in a bad economy, high inflation and we were sick of taxes.. shortly afterwards, taxes were cut.. maybe some politicians watched this movie and decided to be like Popeye
I think this movie has a lot of interesting themes and sub-texts throughout. Artistically this is a winner - one day movies will have their own branch of semiotics study, I do hope and pray. From what I can remember it was a bomb at the box office, and I can see why - there's too much going on for casual viewing.
Yeah, the movie made back double the budget ($50 Million Gross, $25 Million Dollar Budget) and it is the 2nd highest grossing Robert Altman movie of all time behind M*A*S*H*
whats funny though is how they really looked at us when we got angry over taxes, because they were taxing their own people back on the mainland almost 3times the amount we were. .. (speaking of before the tea party) they seen us as winy lil people lol
One thing important that was missing from the film that was always in the cartoon. When popeye finally beats bluto or brutus, "The Stars and Stripes Forever" plays boldy.
I can watch this movie over and over again. I loved it as a child and as an adult. I can't believe it's been almost 30 yrs since I first saw it. Time flies!
According to an article on wikipedia, Harry Knowles of "Ain't It Cool News" revealed that during a discussion with Robert Evans, Evans revealed to him that he's been sitting on a THREE HOUR VERSION of this film, with was supposedly Robert Altman's TRUE vision! Don't know how true this is, as I don't trust either wikipedia, or Knowles, but as a student of film, I always sensed that this movie was cut down from a longer version. Let's keep our fingers crossed!!!
chisler - A person who is trying to scam you for cash (not a "thief" who will just take the money, or "scam artist" who is trying to scam you out of more than money), usually in a setting involving a transaction that would normally be no big deal
Havent' seen this in 20+ years!...since I was messing my pants. BRINGS BACK SO MANY MEMORIES! Even the way that guy yells in time when he burns his hand at 1:11
Don't you have to love the look on Popeye's face, when the waitress brings the hamburger to his table, and I bet he is either thinking "what is this, when do I order a hamburger?", or any way that you can put it. Then I think he realizes that it is for Whimpy.
This is a true American classic as well as a great 80s film. I first saw this film about 1982 or 83. It is definitely one I remember fondly and would love to get on DVD some time, if I can find a copy that is.
everytime i see a musical, i say the same thing. "wouldn't this world be better if everyone just randomly broke into song and well coriographed dance?"
Wimpy loves his hamburgers and apparently so does that taxman. And Bluto is digging the ribs. And all the singers are right. Everything really is food especially in that place.
It is very rare that a film is created that I love to watch over and over - this is one. So many great songs and enjoyable for all ages.

"Chislers" tax.
chisler - A person who is trying to scam you for cash (not a "thief" who will just take the money, or "scam artist" who is trying to scam you out of more than money), usually in a setting involving a transaction that would normally be no big deal

AWESOME!
Havent' seen this in 20+ years!...since I was messing my pants. BRINGS BACK SO MANY MEMORIES! Even the way that guy yells in time when he burns his hand at 1:11
This movie is so tweaked out! I love it!

Wimpy loves his hamburgers and apparently so does that taxman. And Bluto is digging the ribs. And all the singers are right. Everything really is food especially in that place.
