there are alot of good basses for around 500 my suggestion is go to , guitar center or ur local music store and try out a bunch of diff basses and see which one u like the best, not take other peopls word cuz wut someone else likes u ur self might not like

Fender Squiers are pretty good. Everyone rips on them, but I find they're a great bass for beginners.

i got a Mexican J-Bass for 479 @ my GC. It's one of the most beautiful pieces of equipment in he world. But if you want to keep it simple, try a Japanese P-Bass or a J-Bass (both are around 500 bucks depending on the finish)

I play one at practice all the time. I wouldn't hesitate to gig with it at all. If you get one that doesn't come with the factory complications then you can have a decent bass.

You don't even have to spend $500 bucks my friend. You can go on ebay and try checking out different auctions. I own some expensive basses but I did find a China-made Fender Squier Jazz bass that I won for just $70 bucks. I got it, set it up myself and it plays smooth as silk with no fret buzz. The action is now lower than some guitars I've seen with no fret buzz. Sounds killer! Cheap bass that plays like a dream. You can take the remaining $400 and get you a decent bass amp.
