The only star in this awful production isRu Raimondi, his voice and acting are superb, Domingo should never have taken on any tenor role, he is a baritone, but the sceaming rather than singing Vittoria is really unforgiveable.
Raimondi is the star in this film, Domingo is no tenor and Malfitano's acting poor as she clings to Ru instead of repelling him. But I would also find it hard to repel this lovely man!
Raimondi is absolutely excellent here and on the whole I much prefer this scene than the 85 version with McNeill and Behrens and it also moves me more than the 1980 studio recording with Scotto. But Domingo's best Cavaradossi is, in MHO, from 1976 movie with Raina Kabaivanska. And Milnes was very good there as Scarpia too.
Can anyone in all honesty dispute the vocal perfection and absolute passion for music that Domingo expresses in this part? Even for those who don't completely understand everthing that is being said, his VITTORIA says it all. Although I'm not head over heels for Malfitano she does a discrete job in this Tosca at least she has the over-dramatizing diva/primadonna thing on her side)and what to say about Raimondi- magnifico-he is Scarpia for excellence- he completely breathed life into this role.
This is a very well made film, though it also has it's flaws. It's an improvement on Domingo's first Tosca film in the 1970's with Raina Kabaivanska. Malfitano's Tosca is one of character integrity as far as acting. She's intense but she may not have the 100 percent right voice for Tosca. Sometimes, she seemed strained and squeaky. Raimondi's Scarpia is really good. He is also devilishly handsome! Domingo's Cavaradossi is always excellent.
Vivat Domingo as Mario Cavadarossi!!!! Vittoria! Coraggio! Raimondi is also graet, but as Scarpia he's too big skunk for me... And of course I like also Malfitano as Toca, but MARIO IS THE BEST! (And it is not true, that Domingo looks here too old!)
What exactly do you mean by "skunk"? I disagree completely with that word. Raimondi is an exceptional Scarpia--the most complex Scarpia emotionally and dramatically.
I agree with you. I also like Raimondi. But I can't help myself, he's so much negative character here, that I can't sypathise with him. Especially whan he's tortuing Mario. Of course I have nothing against Raimondi as an actor. He's really very good.
when the opera was performed on tv I got up at 5 in the morning to watch the last act which was transmitted at 6'o clock in the morning. It was really great. The singers stood on the terrace of castell St Angeo and the sun was rising over St Peter. And they sang LIVE!
The way this is filmed is fascinating, especially when the door opens and the camera whips out. I can't imagine the preparation everyone had to go through.
Malfitano I don't care for; her singing sound constipated and she uses the same gesture every single time she wants to make a dramatic point. Domingo sounds great, even if he looks too old, and Raimondi makes an amazing Scarpia, elegant and subtle. It's too bad the last bit of his aria/scena is cut off.
To those who think Raimondi isn't convincing enough as Scarpia:
He is the best Scarpia ever, read the opera critiques. Get the 2001 movie, get the 2004 Madrid DVD and the 2006 Verona DVD and then come back and talk to us.
Interesting setting... Domingo was pretty good in his little segment. Malfitano, however, is not at her best vocally, though she is quite keen dramatically, IMO.
I don't think Raimondi is nasty enough as Scarpia.
You're right. In fact, Ruggero Raimondi opened the way for bass-baritones to sing Scarpia. In 1982, at the invitation of Herbert von Karajan, he recorded his first "Tosca" (together with Jose carreras and Katia Ricciarelli). And he has been the most intense, powerful, attractive, and vocally marvellous Scarpia ever since.
Domingo is no tenor?? What a joke!!! LOL

scarpia rol is not for Raimondi, many people always says that and it¨s true, this is a great baritone rol, not for a bass baritone, don¨t you think?
cantanteporsiempre 4 years ago
I disagree. Bass-baritones like Raimondi can sing the role as well.

I agree with cantanteporsiempre Raimondi is not a good Scarpia, if you want to hear a good one, you should listen to gobbi, macneil or nucci
vestal86 4 years ago
Well, tastes differ. I love Gobbi as well but both McNeil & Nucci bore me because they (IMO) aren't half as intense in the role as Raimondi.
