  • so the whole wait till the car is equal with pressure or whatever is fake?!?1

  • @datkillah420 no, it works, but the wait would kill you most likely, for running out of air.

  • You've got kids in the car, you're screwed. That's really terrifying. I know most children wouldn't react, and even if they did, they'd have a hell of a job opening doors with all that water.

  • Okay, that's very good to know (really), but... What if there are children in the back of your car? I'm pretty sure they wouldn't be able to react that fast. :-s

  • That's why i bought Ford Fiesta! Because when you lock it inside using the central lock anybody can go out inside if they wish, but nobody can open doors outside. Intelligent isnt it??

  • can't he just get out from the sun/moon roof?

  • ugggh now i need to get an oxygen tank in the back of my car, drowning/suffocating is my biggest fear!

  • Mythbusters did it, you're just lame.

  • @Redrobottyler Top gear did it first (Nov 2003) vs. Mythbusters (Jan 2007). you're just uninformed ;)

  • if you can crack the window even a bit you will have no trouble opening the door. You can actually buy a little spring loaded pick that is designed to break the window.

  • id break the glass-always works...

  • They failed to mention commercial devices are available that break car windows (and may be stored in the glove compartment.) Alternatively I have seen a demonstration where the head rest was removed and the metal that connects it to the seat used to shatter a window.

  • What about if you got one of those super cars with those electric doors that slide up ? Now your fucked !

  • why no wind the window down ..well in a old car like that anyway

  • i did it withmy crown victoria 2004 but i get out and my crownvictoria still working i spend 1000 on it

  • What your supposed to do is break the window while you still can so the car can fill with water faster, then the pressure is equal and you can try to open the door or just swim through the window.

  • @SmokeWeedEveryHour Trouble is, car windows are difficult to break with your bare hands.

  • @tic07096903 Difficult, not impossible. Aspecially in a life or death situation. Also, anything with an edge or point, like keys, can be used to smash a window easier.

  • @tic07096903 That's why you're supposed to keep an emergency escape tool in your car for emergencies. It combines a seatbelt cutter and a window breaker.

  • that was a really junky car who would buy that!?!?!?

  • @frogerloo202 probably someone who got no money to buy a pagani zonda.

  • @y6562 yeah

  • I have been in a crash into a river i know how Hammond felt its really scary especially if you cant open the door.

    Your a ledgend Hammond. xx

  • and thats why i ride a motorcycle

  • @yamaha69x i hate motor bikes

  • @yamaha69x

You know what they call bikers who ride on a wet day? Organ donors :D

  • try to get out as fast as u can like we would wanna wait till we close the engine the radio get all the bags fix ur hair and then gooo obviously were ganna go fast as we can

  • Ok ok, I admit, I held my breath as he went underneath the water.

  • @KinetiK138 I think we all did. I know I did.

  • If you can't open the door while the car's floating try to take out you head rest off the seat and use the metal joints in the head rest to break through the glass then wait until the water enters the car to balance pressure at that time it would be very easy to open the door and exit the car safely.

caution : Try to face away from the window or the tempered glass might blow in your face.

  • @OVERLAPE obviously your supposed to get out as fast as you can, so just climb through the window.

  • @RaiShizaki True that would be much better than opening the door sorry about that and thank you for sharing this.

    Have a great weekend cheers.

  • @OVERLAPE Good ol' Bear Grylls eh? Worst Case Scenario?

  • What happens if you got electal locks? Doesn the water cause powercuts making the car locks down?

  • @TheAdemptio

No cars have ONLY electrical door locks. There's always a mechanical backup. Either by a separate lever, or connected to the inside door lever itself.

  • wont u get electrocuted if u opened the windows?

  • you might also have a better chance if you have RWD

  • theres a problem with this. if you drive into "the drink" or anywhere for that matter, yoor not gonna have a huge crane on the car. when they put this on, it sinks slower and takes longer for the pressure to equalize. plus you could swim out the sunrook if you had one. and if the lock was jamed, if you had maunual windows you could just roll them down. but they tried to make it look like you'd drown becuz if you could survive some idiot would try it and then there wouldnt be anymore top gear

  • what would you do if you are underwater and have to sneeze ?

  • mith busters did it at the same rate..

  • WIND YOUR WINDOW DOWN!

  • SMASH THE FUCKING WINDOW

  • @MrBender900

    its harder than you think

  • @MrBender900 can not do it because pressure is 1500 lb/in when car is submerged to only 10 or so feet//// its like pounding into the brick wall

  • that happened to me once and i died =(

  • all was fine until the child-lock fucks you up

  • richard always risks his life for this show...

    he's one crazy little fellow

  • So doors that go from _ to | in an upward motion are safest for crashing into water...

  • jhajhJA,... and what if u r in an armored vehicle im pretty sure u r fucked up...

  • Carry a gun, shoot the passenger door window out before you hit the water. xD

  • did he die?

  • Fie, fore, free, too, won, English!

  • I noticed that some water went up his nose as he took his last breaths in the sinking car. He was trying to get that water out of his system. That probably messed him up a little and made it a lot more difficult for him to escape.

  • sometimes people open their windows to save petrol of the airconditioning so if u go into a lake and u dont have anything to break the window or if u dont react fast enough make sure ur windows open

  • I keep a screw driver and camping mallet in the glove box of my car, my only problem if this happened would be getting my seat belt off. If I did get my belt off, all I'd have to do is grab the screw driver and use the camping mallet to whack the window out.

  • @RawrName it'd be more portable and convenient to hit it directly with the mallet. Or I guess a ball-pein hammer or axe!

  • @futsalfred2 Not underwater really, the mallet underwater would do nothing as the water pressure on the outside would hold the glass firm. If I hit the mallet into the handle part of the screw driver, it may shatter the glass or crack it.

  • @RawrName, that may be true, for a mallet. I think an axe or ball-pein hammer would do the job in one step rather than two. You only need to pierce the tiniest of cracks in the glass for the whole thing to split apart and cave in. High force on a small area is key. See these specially made window breakers, they don't look especially powerful:

(look up window breakers on google image search)

  • @fanatic114 that's true, on land you could kick windows in all day. underwater, you move slower because there's water pressing on your body making it harder to move. kicking's out of the question. and pushing is out also for you cannot push harder outwards than the water presses inwards in the window.

  • Why Not Just Row Down The Window And Turn Away If Glass Breaks I Can´t Be That Bad

  • There's a tool you can buy for in case you drive into the water. It has a sharp end to deflate the airbag, it has a razor to cut the seat belt and a metal end to smash the window. Quite a useful tool if you live near water.

  • @fanatic114 plus the water (for some reason) softens the blow to the glass. The thing you want to get is one of those hammer/seat belt cutters that mount with a bracket to the floor board of the car. That way you can cut the seat belt and bust out the window with the hammer part.

  • What if you kick the window?

  • what u need to do if something like this really happens is to kick through the windshield or your side windows and swim out quickly, dont wait for the pressure to equilize

  • how about a delorean? as you sink the water will HELP the doors open!

  • This is why is better to have non-electric windows

  • iif your in a waterproof car, say like a REALLY sealed up tank, won't it float?

  • @jlauthorities how would it float? its significantly more dense than water

  • @hameed he might be thinking if you make it water tight the air inside might be enough to float the car

  • @hameed i think it would float, if the air cant escape, (air is much less dence than water) it will help the car float. Thats how thoes ships the size of a block of flats manage to float :D

  • So it's o.k to drive into a lake with my G37 convertible?

  • i think the step 1 is u have to open ur window be 4 the car sniked in the water!

  • This is why I don't drive into the water!

  • I saw the mythbusters version of this test too and for some reason, I thought this was much scarier. I guess because there wasn't as much saftey stuff

  • thats why i have a buggy

  • i thought u were supposed to break a window. its faster that way

  • Actually, because of the pressure of the water against the window, Its really tough too.. That's why I always prefer cars with manual windows.. You can roll them down in a situation like this, no matter what the pressure is. :)

  • That's why car safety tools tend to have a metal point on them for bashing the window through. If you can crack the glass, the unequal pressure will help in breaking it.

  • @thweepz don't brake any window cuz glass part will hurt you

and if you are in a fast running water ... unlike this tank (or a lake) you can kiss good bye

  • Depends... if your goal is to see which way you'll die quicker, by drowning or by bleeding to death, then I suppose shattering a plate of glass and having that glass rush towards you at high speed would be a good tactic.

  • providing you keep your throat out of the way of the flying glass, i think the glass scratching your face and head a bit will be the least of your troubles

  • @histrion2 most cars now have safety glass so it will not break into sharp shards, it will break into round like peices.

  • how about if u are driving a convertible?

  • try the top

  • lol

  • wait til u sink to the bottom then drown

  • @imilkdude

    hahhahahahahhah ah

  • What if you're driving a horse?

  • Keep sitting on it and let it swim to the shore

  • funny

  • @stephen98841272 hop out the top

  • @stephen98841272 it would of been easier

  • @stephen98841272 if you drove in without a seatbelt, no worries about sinking, you'll just float up and out.

  • rip the top then get out and if its down just get out haha

  • @stephen98841272 you can jump out quicker :)

  • @stephen98841272 Depends on the color your hair...

  • @stephen98841272 then sink to the bottom and wait for the paramedics to arive

  • @stephen98841272 well then you can just swim out :D

  • @stephen98841272 than its much easier :D

  • @stephen98841272 what if an airplane crashes and your not in it?

  • @stephen98841272 you DIE. (:

  • @stephen98841272 then chuck norris comes to you and holds you down

  • @stephen98841272 you undo your seetbelt, and swim out through where the roof would be lol ... i would hate to be in a car with my parents in the front and me and a mate in the back... of a coupe,,, cos i would have to wait for my parents to get fully out of the car, then use the two front and only doors to physically get out of the car . ..lol

  • @stephen98841272

then you dont have to worry about trying to open the door :P

  • @stephen98841272 what if the roof is up?

  • @stephen98841272 then... ur a lucky bastard XDD

  • I never realized it was that hard to open the door, I always thought it was hard for people because of possible damage to the opening, not the pressure.

  • @alterbr33d, man I thought the same thing. I'm happy I watched this video, now I'll be knowing.

  • nein du musst sofort die fensteraufmachen und dann die tür so schnell du kannst.

  • also wie jetzt? man soll warten, bis der druck sich reguliert hat und aussteigen, wenn man unterwasser ist erst?

  • holy shit dude, i think i was almost nervous as him just watching this, really intensw

  • ahhaha i caught myself taking breaths with him when he was taking his last breaths...tha would be sooo nerve wrecking

  • i 2 did d same mate....lol

  • this is horrible because my brother nearly died when a car he was in spun off the road flipped and when into the canal one girl died and another person is in a coma my brother escaped unharmed luckly

    R.I.P

  • What about rolling down the windows ?!

  • power windows dont ALWAYS work when theres water, but i guess you could try, or just use manual windows, which would be best

but i think escape via sunroof is best, because you dont speed up the water getting into the car

  • Maybe also he didnt push the door hard enough maybe do to panic.

  • would you panic in that situation =3

  • I dont really get what hes trying to say. If the car if filled with water shouldnt the outside and inside equal the same thing once it fills no matter if its sinking or not. Because if the car is filled up wouldnt the pressure be the same inside and out even if its sinking and not yet leveled? Correct me if im wrong because thats the way I see it.

  • The water on the outside has more other water pressing on it. It's like water at sea level vs in one of the absurdly deep parts of the ocean. It's roughly the same amount of water, but the water on the outside is still pushing harder against the doors than the water on the inside is.

  • Thx anyways the best way is just to get out right away.

  • 1m deep compared to 3m deep is completely different

  • Water pressure increases at about 1 atmosphere per 10 feet of depth. One AT is 15 PSI, so at ten feet deep, every square inch of the the door is being pushed on by 15lbs of force. If a car door was 900ci, a net force of 675lbs would be on it at 10ft. Water leaks in slowly, and the car drops. Even once the car is filled with water, by the time enough flows in to increase the pressure by 1AT, the car has dropped another 10. There is a lag in the pressure change.

  • So until the car stops, the P outside will always be more than inside, since it takes longer for the pressure inside to rise 1AT than it takes the car to sink 10ft. Make any sense? What I never understood, is why they can put AC, power seats, stereo, airbags, etc. into cars, but they can't make the window motors water resistant, or fit the car with automatic airbags to keep it afloat. Airbags in the roof, so it will right itself, and stay afloat, and a sunroof/escape hatch. Oh, yeah; too much $.

  • @justforever96, you're absolutely right about the airbags which would make the car able to float.

  • airbags have holes

  • If anyone wants to watch all Top Gear episodes for free from seasons 1-13 just PM me I'll send you the link

    Thanks

  • sQuba car aqua lung included?

  • well then that pretty much screws anyone else in the car, cause your gonna fill it up so fast its gonna pretty much lock the doors of whoever else is inside.

When I was in the marines they would take a helicipter, flip it, and drop us in the water, that was fun trying to unbuckle and get out the side door upside down and underwater

  • yoru supposed to kick the window out

  • no...

  • yes...

  • I saw this EXACT same thing on mythbusters.

    1. It wouldn't take that long for the pressure to equalize

    2. The electric windows do not short out.

  • 1. If you've been doing deep breathing exercises and you can last that long, go for it and 2. depends on the car, condition, type of insulation, etc. Usually if you drive into a lake you won't be controlling your breathing or have recently serviced your window motors.

  • open the windows before u sink...then get out...u got about 30 sec's and it's enough to get out...

  • i think they fucked the experiment cuz the guy sitting in the back pumping air out as he takes every breath through the tank

  • isnt better to open Both windows? and flee thugh them?

  • you would think so. but power windows probably wouldnt work with the water. idk

  • that's what he tried to do at 3:12, but they didn't do anything, if water runs into the door, and you have electric windows they will short circuit and fail. And if not that, the water will reach your car's battery, short those out which will put the car without electricity so the electric windows will fail as well.

I guess the window thing will only work if you have manually opened windows.

  • Cool tests. Wish they had added more tests. Like trying to open the car door after it hits the bottem an sinks into three feet of mud. Like would be at the bottem of a lake.

  • seems unnecesary. you're still screwed when you hit the bottom

  • Will the pressure equalize quickly if both windows were down? He probably had a hard time at first because the windows were up. That's my theory.

  • if the windows were down he would not need to wait for the pressure to equalize to get the door open cause someone with half a brain would just climb out the window

  • That didn't answer my question in the slightest...

  • Someone with half a brain would also realise that one could not climb out of the window againts the flow of water into the car untill the pressure was equal.

  • cool spot! i like this experiment

  • thats why i have a window smasher/ seatbelt cutter tool in my car..... but thats fuckin scary

  • I hope you didn't put it in your locked glovebox.

  • no i didnt, because then it would b useless in an emergency. its comes with a holder that screws to the bottom of your dash

  • would a standard hammer for building work be fine to escape? even tho i dont drive i am intreuged lol

  • yes, this one just has 2 pointy ends intead of round ends, and it attaches to your dash so its not flopping around in your car, you probably dont want a hammer flying around ur car in the case of an accident.( i no i wouldnt) and it has a seatbelt cutter on it too, but a hammer would work too

  • cheers

  • If you broke the window before your car was filled with water then yes, you could smash the window and get out.

If however your car was filled with water then you would be able to get the strength in your arm swing to break the window.

  • still wouldn't work, and why would you have a hammer in a car

    in the first place?

  • I reckon when the central locking shorted out, the actuators left the door in the locked position & Hammond didn't realise.

  • but if this was the case, how come he managed to open it ones he came to the bottom of the tank? ... it's not like someone came and unlocked it for him ? .....

  • Hammond probably realised a simply pulled up on the door lock catch. But we'll probably never know for sure. Very scary situation to be in - in real life situation, you'd probably be in a river where there is a current and the water is murky. If the sunroof was manual - I'd be climbing outta it !!

  • The pressure around an object rises as it sinks. That is, the pressure won't stop rising until the object stops and so can't be equalised until the car gets to the bottom.

  • Still, most cars unlock when you pull the handle inside.

  • You're correct....but NOT on the early Vauxhalls like the Carlton. You manually have to pull up on the door latch. Lucky no-body 'deadlocked' the doors !!! He'd have to kick the screen out then !!

  • I can't think how they didn't foresee the difficulty of opening the door in emergencies. Today they'd probably be in for some serious lawsuits.

  • Does he drive without a seat belt?? I'm sure the seat belt delays your escape!!! The best thing you have to have is that little hammer that breaks glass in the car.

  • looks like the titanic

  • First advice: Don't drive in to the lake.

  • Yeah like peoples who drown drive their car in a lake on purpose...

  • what kinda fucking argument is that? how old are you 5?

  • What if I'm a fish that accidentally drives on land?

  • LOL

  • you need to equalize the air and get out

    well that's stupid

  • hmm.. its like the mythbusters

  • it would be good if they put a somthing else for the car safty for water ...... maybe fit water proof bombs in to the glass windows so when the car drowns the bomb will set off and the windows will break and you get out ........ its just an idea

  • and you don't think you would harm the person inside by blowing the window off?

  • i dunno maybe granaeds or somthing else to break the windows ... you know the car glass is not the house ones when the car window break it wont smash to pisses it will be cracked and turns into somthing like a playdo
