I must say I am very impressed by how square that board came out. I think I'll have to build me one of those lumber mills one day.
On a side note. To make the mill even more safe why not run the on/off switch down the new push poll so that the operator does not ever have to go near the whirling blade.
how do you set the thickness of the board??do you lift it and put the first cut under the piece of the wood and so on so you have still the same thickness or you just have like many of 1" boards that you always add..??
what about blade guards? nahh kidding.. i dont even know what they are haha. Just wanted to say you made some pretty descent planks with this contraption! You can make your own building material, excellent...
Wow, that's impressive. How'd you make the saw carriage ride on the rails so seemingly smooth ? I guess I should look at the earlier videos for a clue.
Excellent! Good to see the lumber mill going again, hope to see you build on that super tall structure again, the thing you were going to build your robot in, it'd make a good Giant Robot hotel for geeks that want to build stuff. I'm a total geek and had a geek idea, automate that lumber mill, kinda like the way you did before with pulleys, but maybe you could have it knock the cut wood off the top into a pile, reset the mill, and start cutting the next one, that'd be a totally cool project.
Was waiting to see this in action.. works pretty well I'd say. I imagine you'll tweak it or maybe make a new one ? Anyways that thing has potential for your many projects :)
Was watching the video and was going to comment that you should really add a pulley system to put some force on the blade and not have to push it by hand. But seems I'm not the first one. =)
Why don't you? It's just like two pulleys and a 10kg weight and you're free to do whatever you want for the time it takes to finish cutting the board.
Have you noticed any wear on the tires yet? I made a band saw with small rubber rollers a while back and the saw blade ate thru them quite fast.
@JMEMantzel Oh my goodness the whole time I was watching the video I was just thinking about your poor wife... she must agonize with worry every time you tell her "Honey, I'm going out to cut some wood!". I hope you have good insurance, lol! I do have to say, though, that does make some NICE cuts and it's cool you made that from scratch! Thumbs up! (I still have both of mine... :-)
i know my work if they ding up a blade even a bit they replace it they look about the same newer blades mean better cutting but i dont know if it would cut that wood but maybe you could ask a meat dept or maybe i could ship you a older one
That is flipping epic Jamie! Nice to see beauts of planks coming out of it after it lying up for so long!! Fantastic work.
I would like to suggest adding some sort of wire guard to the back end of it (side you push it from) just "in case" that blade snaps or comes off! I would hate for you to end up with a nasty gash or worse!
@borriszan Ya... i was mildly skeptical that it would still be in good shape after sitting outside for 2 years. Other than a bit of rust on the blade, its like I made it last week. :-)
That looked very rewarding. You could get 2 railroad sleepers from each log. I always wanted to make a bed from railroad sleepers. Stained and polished with perfect angles. Something about the security of being cocooned inside such glorious pieces of wood. Hope your boards don't split whilst drying mate.
@bilko1971 Ya, its totallt rewarding. Even when pushing it through manually... its like a chance to sit and calmly contemplate the universe, and blah blah... then poof. Fancy new board. :-)
im moar pop on YouTube, and I have to say, just cuz yu THINK ur are super COOL, I say you are SUPER LAME, oh God now you have to go rethink your whole robot bullshit.
@millamulisha He came from Australia. He's one of the people I'm planning on buying an island with. Err... i mean... with whom I'm planning to buy an island.
@JMEMantzel but you were smart and used tires that are rounding instead square, this causes the blade (band) tend towards the middle at the peak of the rounding in the tires.
5:00 for first plank, very nice

What happened to that device that would pull on the lumber mill by itself, using the weight of a tree trunk?
Kuparowitz 1 year ago
@Kuparowitz Ha ha. device? You mean the piece of rope, and 2 pulleys? Its on the floor somewhere... hmm.... somewhere...
I've picked the tree it'll attack to next. :-)

How long does it take for the blade to make it across the whole length of the log that you featured Jaimie?
grinninggnome 1 year ago
@grinninggnome It depends. The wood has soft and hard spots. 5 - 15 minutes.
I'm doing something softer next. :-)
JMEMantzel 1 year ago
Hey do you get any warping issues with the wood you cut, or do you use it before that becomes a problem?
bdrman2004 1 year ago
@bdrman2004 Well, that particular log has been drying for 2 years so it won't warp.
If I cut something fresh, I'll usually use it fpretty soon, and screw it into place, or just stack it in such a way as to discourage warping.
