  • What gear do you use for the recording? Which soundcard? Which audio interface?

  • @malamutelocomotive

    Soundcard is M-audio Firewire Solo.

  • @laripsspiral

    Thank you!

  • wath youe call off axis is not really off axis

  • @rom1w

    How so?

  • @laripsspiral

Off-axis is where the mic is positioned between the center and edge of the cone, but pointed at the center OR positioned in the center and pointed towards the edge.

The 3rd position IS off-axis. The 2nd position, however, is not.

  • Lovin the tech 21 man. Great video.

  • the sound doesnt have definition that mic is for vocals

  • Any mic good for vocals uses to be good for guitars too.

  • cool riff

  • the i5 completely smokes the 57. Make sure everyone knows that when you start changing the position of the mics and turning them off axis, that it will start to introduce phase problems with the sound.

  • @gunthervinson

Moving one mic around shouldn't introduce any phase problems whatsoever.

  • @laripsspiral Correct. Moving one mic wont matter, but when you start doing multiple mics, it will cause huge problems. I should of specified. Good luck with your vocal mic.

  • @gunthervinson

Yup, it might cause problems. But not necessarily.

  • Check out the Audix i5 at about the same price as an SM57, it has a slightly brighter tone, but both are great.

  • off-axis does not mean that you put the mic away from the center of the speaker but that you put it at an angle, so your notes are not correct.

  • 58.s are great dynamic mikes but the sm57 ,s will have better tonal qualitys for electric guitars ...

  • in theory yes...but at the end of the day its down to the persons tone preference, i used to use a 57 to record my steel string which had no built in pickup then i tried a 58 and liked the tone far more.

but then i tried a beta57 and that just blew the 58 and the 57 away! shure make some damn good mics!

  • 58s and 57s are the same mic. the only difference is that the 58 has a windscreen

  • Great video. Very informative. Now I have a general idea on where to place the mic for a certain tone. It would be great if you used a SM57 or a Sennheiser e609 to compare the microphones as well.

  • Thanks!

True, I've been wanting to get SM57 for ages. Maybe that'll be my next purchase.

  • I like the low end on your tone

Whats annoying is the camcorder kicks in some serious ducking as soon as you start playing...

to me straight at the center sounded best...ya i know,58's for vocals anyway

  • It's not camcorder, it's Youtube's compression algoritm.

  • @laripsspiral Sounds like you need to brick wall limit your audio before you upload.

  • @gunthervinson

    Why?

I mean I know what they are used for but why would I use one here?

  • @laripsspiral That way your levels are all the same, and there is no artificial coloring by the broadcast compressors.

  • @gunthervinson

Uhm, well, it would only make it worse if I added more limiting/compression to the audio beforehand, wouldn't it? Compression and limiting are the problems here, so adding more doesn't make sense.

  • what are you using, e.g. effects, could you add it to the description

  • I might have used Boss SD-1, but that's all.

  • When I record, it sounds good through my headphones, but when I play it back from the computer, it's not bassy at all and sounds bad. I have this setup: mic>mixer>computer. I recorded it with quicktime. Also I have no soundcard. any ideas?

  • Are your headphones connected to computer or mixer?

  • They are connected to the mixer while recording, then the computer while listening to the playback

  • Ok, so the problem occurs after mixer. Mic placement and signal chain until that should be ok.

Soundcard is quite essential, although you can get by with integrated one too. See if there is some automation going on in the audio settings from Control Panel. Windows has some automatic limiter on by default.

    Difficult to say.

  • duude sweet tone!

but i gotta ask, how did you record the sound? cuz i'm trying to record my guitar with a mic using a mixing table conected to my pc but it sounds terrible :(

    thnks

  • Thanks.

If I remember correctly, it was mic > mixer > soundcard > computer.

How does it sound? Are you sure it's not clipping?

  • it sounds like im using a 5 watt amp you know (i use a 100watt ¬¬) , it's not really buzzy or anything, but it doesn't make justice to the real sound at all , and i've tried everything, mic placement, changing all of the mixer settings, changing the cables etc etc i think my soudcard is fucked up

i think i'm just going to get a pod ux1 (digital recorder) and get this over with

    thnks for replying! :)

  • great video thanks for this! just curious as to which mic placement sounds the best to you? because people have told me to always place is off center to the cone, but to me it sounded way too muddy, so i prefer direct cone actually..

  • Good question.

I like the third option here, and usually use something like that, i.e. off-center, but pointed towards the center. Best of both worlds, I hope.

  • can you tell whats is the mic model and the speaker? :)

  • Mic is some cheap Wharfdale and speaker is Celestion Seventy 80.

  • Tnx man, i apreciate. i already have seveny 80 ,now i need the other part xD.take care

  • Quick question man, What program do you record the guitar tracks into?

  • For this video, it was just Windows movie maker.

  • Great demo!

  • thanks

  • great demo no crap thx

  • thanks

  • this demo makes me wanna get stoned =]

  • It was that good or that bad?

  • when i hung out with my nazi an dpunk friends theyd always play something like that, at the time wed get stoned for a short song like the video one hahaha. those were the days

  • umm kinda of learnig to figure out how to use a mic amp live? instead of recording. i dont know confuse

  • What? I didn't quite understand....

  • dude what mic r u using? nice playing!!

  • The mic is Wharfdale, if I remember correctly.

    Cheap stuff.

  • :O thats sound Great :O

  • Thanks!

  • Varsin mukavasti kuulee erot. Harmi, etten itse saa samanlaista laatua missään asennossa :/

  • Mikä vahvistin, mikä mikki, mihin se on kytketty?

Mikkeinä olen käyttänyt Sennheiserin e906:ta, Shuren SM-58:a ja Roden NT1-A:ta. Mikit vedetty suoraan Presonuksen FP-10:n etusiin. Saundi on jotenkin tunkkainen ja ponneton.

  • No ihme kyllä jos ei noista lähde hyvää soundia. Ootko kokeillut eri mikkiasentoja?

No, onnea etsintään kuitenkin. Mukava olis kyllä kuulla sampleja tuosta sinun setistä.

  • Todella hyvä ja selkeä video. Kiitos!

  • Kiitos kommentista!

  • i like the first position.

  • I like the third.
