@vodoochild994 im personally impressed by the new singles and how John has evolved, and you really have to take into account the way he writes/composes because he really bases it all in his personal situation, It has some kind of Bob Dylan feel to it, I Love the crude pain and misery in this rich songs.
seems like unless you release an album that sells more than continuum or battle studies you can't criticize I prefer continuum to battlle studies but they're different albums. I can still listen to continuum when I'm in the mood and a new John Mayer album is just that. A JOHN MAYER album... let him release what HE wants. I'll support whatever direction he wants to take it and if you don't like it don't buy it and work on releasing your own music before you criticize one on today's music legends
There wouldn't be anyone who happens to have the version of this song that he played during the radio broadcasts before Battle Studies would they? I'd imagine it was good quality and I'd be so happy to have it.
? all the blues vs. pop arguement is silly. Pop is more complex than blues harmonically, but blues can be more intricate in lead lines. I'd rather more Pop with blues sensibilites, like continuum, than a full on blues record.
But, whats the actual truth? Pop grew out of blues music, ultimatly being the term coined for any music thats released for mass consumption. So if you say you don't want him to do pop music anymore, then your saying u dont want him to realease another record: blues is pop
Battle Studies isn't as much soul as the others...but it definitely has some. Sure there are several pop tracks on there, but they're pretty darn good.
all the woman will enjoy battlestudies cause he's john mayer and they(most) prefer pop to blues. however he's trying to transition to a more bluesy tone and the sooner the better because he has to much skill to waste it on overly repetitive and simple songs.

@johnnnybruce Does not matter what he promises. He always comes up with something new and different. There are so many elements to his music. You cant just say "too much pop stuff".

I'm pretty sure this was at his concert at the San Francisco Fillmore right after Katrina. He was there for two nights. I went to the first one and it was a great concert.
@surfingers No it's a song dedicated to the victims of hurricane Katrina. He even released a studio version of this on a cd beneffiting the victims called : Hurricane Relief :)
I completely agree with Chaferbud. It's such a moving song. Speaks to everyone individually while also portraying the overall sense of exactly what goes on when people split up or have fights. It's so raw.
you must not be the biggest fan EVER if your doubting his musical capability, obviously if you liked the last 3 albums why wouldnt you like the next..Continuum was different from room for squares and look how that turned out
I'm concerned about the new album. I'm the biggest fan EVER, but i honestly don't think the new single is very good. Not really impressed. I'm just praying the new album is the quality we've all come to expect, and not all pop mush.
i hear ya. i agree with you. he totally bombed that crossroads cover on his new cd. and whats bad is he usually plays it well live but not on this cd.
@voodoochild994 You were right .. Battle Studies isn't a good album. Hopefully the new album coming out soon is going to be awesome. It seems like it should be really good.I can't wait for his next guitar album though it's going to be unbelievable.Check out my channel I have a lot of John Mayer ...its way better than chaferbuds channel.
@25Ragz Battle Studies was actually a really well-crafted album that wasn't necessarily meant to showcase just guitar but John's whole musical ability. The layering that went into all the songs - Heartbreak Warfare, Edge of Desire, Friends, Lovers or Nothing and Assassin just to name my favourites - is crazy and to say that it 'isn't a good album' is incredibly insulting to the amount of effort he obviously puts into his music.
@capnjacksparra Its really not man.. haha.John even said its not that good... i like a few songs from it but its really not that good of an album in my opinion.
@25Ragz He's said that it's not better than Continuum, it doesn't mean he wasn't happy with it. It's always going to be hard for him to top Continuum because that was a fantastic album, but that doesn't mean Battle Studies should be completely disregarded as being any good. Also keep in mind that it is a concept album based around juxtaposing love and war, and you can't say he did a bad job in putting that idea across - in fact i think he did that very convincingly.
@capnjacksparra He's basically said that he didnt like his new album on a radio show and several other occasions.. he was talking about Edge of Desire and about how its the best song on the album and said "is this song really that good?or is the album just that bad?"and he has said a lot oftimes he was disappointed with it.I like the cd...its ok. I just don't think it expresses how talented John is at all.The album grew on me but I know he'd agree with me that it's just ok. not good.it just isnt
This is one of my favorite songs ever, and I really wish he would record it. Unfortunately he let Aaron Neville record it instead.
He wrote this right after Katrina, and it's about the loss that that devestating storm brought to so many... and this was recorded at a show within a week or 2 after, if I remember correctly.
I am really ticked however that this song and Taking On Water wont be on his upcoming albulm. They are both amazing songs and they both fit right in with the theme of battle studies.
yes he is going back to his old 'writing ways' but just think, we all know how amazing his live in la album was, and that was with simple music. and he made it better. hes teasing us, and in his concerts is when our jaws will drop once again.
its on the screen in front of you ;) just press your keyboard's Print Screen button and paste it in to Word, and email, Microsoft Paint (or equivalent on the Mac)
Me too. i haven't heard any cool guitar parts or solos yet. It seems like he is going back 6 years to the old simplistic JM (which isn't necessarily bad, i guess). Not what I was expecting though...
this song is about a friend of his that was homeless and had nobody. his parents just got divorced like 3 months ago. this song was written about 4 yrs ago and this version is played 4 days after katrina and was on an album benefiting katrina with aaron neville!!

Something stupid? Sorry if Im not up to date on every inch of a celebrity's life. Last time I checked they weren't divorced. Great job at making yourself sound like a complete asshole!
@Kolster33...seriously? hurricane katrina? that was 4 years ago now. Continuum would have been the album for a Katrina song...this about his parent's divorce...think about it
Think he says "this is for anyone still hurting from last weekend"...although I haven't a clue what that means!! Can't wait to hear the new album, songs sound brilliant!! :-)
I really don't think you guys have a clue how many songs he's actually written... He's even said himself that for every song that he puts out there there are 10 that just fall into nothingness...
Is there anyone out there who loves this song as much as me? It's so hard to find other versions. I'm not a big fan of the Aaron Neville/Mayer collab... I feel a good Mayer song went to waste.
if this is a really recent song like pretty near to march 1st when this is posted then i think it might be a battle studies song that he was trying out live...apperantly he is playing random shows unnanounced to try his new music out
I found this song by chance as well, along with a few others that I believe are from the same show. Pretty cool stuff. I'm so curious about what he's referring to in the beginning about "still hurting from last weekend." Hard to say.
This song is SO amazing! I have an idea guys.. We should all write a letter to John and ask him if he will release a B-side album, with all the tracks that didn't make the released albums. I would love to hear a studio version of this song (with just John singing), or maybe Lifelines, the Hurt, etc etc..
its off the huricane katrina disaster relief cd. great 2 disc compilation with some great duets. this is a duet with aaron neville, but john's lyrics here are different than on the album version.
this is such a beautiful song. its got so much emotion put into it. Beautiful lyrically and musically! does anyone have an mp3 i need it so badly! Thanks for posting this video x
The song was first performed on the opening night (or second night) of the John Mayer Trio tour in 2005. The song never made it further than that I don't think except for one or two more performances. A lot of songs were written during the trio tour that ended up on Continuum, Vultures for one, this one just didn't it would seem. Nice song though.

Seriously.. I love his music! I need MORE!:P

That makes sense. When I downloaded it, it said "John Mayer Trio" and I was didn't believe it. Now it all clicks. Thanks man.
