Yes, this was a very momentous moment--for the Tourists and Italians there who want to share the spectacle but these are the same people who never go to Church and hear mass. Italian and most European Churches are full of tourists gazing at the architectures and paintings while Churches in Latin America and the Philippines overflow with people to hear Mass
Annuntio vobis gaudium magnum: Habemus Papam! Eminentissimum ac reverendissimum Dominum, Dominum [First Name], Sanctæ Romanæ Ecclesiæ Cardinalem [Last Name], Qui sibi nomen imposuit [Papal Name].
In English, it reads: I announce to you a great joy: We have a Pope! The most eminent and most reverend Lord, Lord [First Name], Cardinal of the Holy Roman Church [Last Name], Who takes to himself the name of [Papal Name

Yes it is a rare chance to be an observant paticipant at such a moment. Wow. I was in St. Peters in 1982 for the Christmas day blessing of JPII, so I can well understand the moment, too.

He said "habemus papam" which means "we have a pope". It is a traditional part of the inauguration-process.
