  • Just started Chrono Cross. SPOILER--SPOILER

    So depressed... WHAT THE HECK!?!

  • I got this on DS after FF4, on my older brother's reccommendation. At first I was a little disappointed that the graphics had not been rendered in CGI as they had in the DS remake of FF4, but when I realized how freaking amazing they were, I'm so glad that tehy didn't change it.

  • Very cool to watch but it's always funny seeing older videos of people talking about old technology being cutting edge. I'm curious if there is any behind the scenes type videos on the production of "Secret of Mana" as well

  • the music when there doing the character bios is from xenogears, weird

  • @Killacaleb2 Unless they reused it in Chrono Trigger, this is in fact the music that plays whenever the characters are at the Millenial Fair.

  • @manthatsgood11 youre right. i dont know what i was thinking. ive had a sqaure game overload as of late :) its not a bad thing

  • Geeeeez the old version of guardia looks so much cooler!!!

  • dream team!

  • put up the whole thing

  • I really hope Sakaguchi at some point can bring some of the Chrono Trigger magic back in the near future.. Since Square aint to considered about the games that made them legendary. CT, CC, Xenogears, FF6,7,9 etc.

Mistwalker's Blue Dragon, not quite made it. Lost Odyssey i liked pretty damn much. Last Story, i cant play since i sold my Wii to get a 360 for.. well gues what :P The other two titles

  • The CC option doesn't work for me.

  • Omg i like the music renditions here! Did they release a soundtrack for the music from this V-jump Pres?

  • Wow!! I have been waiting years to see this footage and yet I couldn't find it I gave up around the time it was posted and decided to do arandom check to see if anyone had it and voila. Thank you. Chrono Trigger is my all time favourite game I have ever even played so seeing this was very great and definitely brought on much notagia.

  • @LFiers Sorry about the spelling errors. I meant "nostagia". Just to add I am deeply dissapointed with Square Co's cease and desist order to kill off the fantastic loooking Chrono Resurrection only to bring out an "updated" version to DS which is exactly the same game pretty much. It's great and all much to fans like me who have completed it various times, we want an truley updated version kind of like what the older Final Fantasy games have gotten on DS. Anyway CT rocks... very underrated..

  • wow, looks intressting how much the game changed.

  • i'm surprised at how sudden the concept was actualized while they were on their trip to America. but the fact that they went and made it happen, aww yeah. apparently kingdom hearts rose out of such a sudden meeting, Mr. Square met Mr. Disney in an elevator and they got to talking. makes sense now that Mr. Dragonball went on a trip with those two square guys just sat down and talked long enough for something this amazing to be born.

  • Why did you put "subtitles" on the title when there aren't even any?

  • Used YouTube much? YouTube supports softsubs now, so you might want to check out the triangle shaped button in the lower right hand corner of the video window and enable "CC" (Closed Captions).

    Learn something new every day.

  • 1:21 crono with epic critical!

  • All thats diferent is the world map lolz

  • Thanks for this, Carnivol.

  • I like the overworld map design on this version better, I don't know why they reduced it so much...

  • I see no english subtitles... wtf?

  • You have to activate "Closed Captions".

In the bottom right corner of the video window, there's an "up" arrow. Hover the mouse over it and select "CC" (it'll be red when activated).

    Hurray for softsubs!

  • Cool. It's nice to know how haphazard a beginning the greatest RPG (and in my opinion video game) yet to be made had. It's really an encouragement for ambitious goals.

  • I actually like some of the arrangements better on this beta

  • oOooOOooo the main theme's all jazzy!

  • If only this was in english sub titles.

  • now it is.

  • wow even the music was different!

  • Love the old battle music.

  • i so want another 16 bit chrono game. dont get me wrong chrono cross was great and all but trigger was epic.

  • The DS remake helps, but Square definitely needs another game in the Chrono series, and a lot closer to Trigger than Cross.

  • how can you call it a remake? NOTHING WAS CHANGED.

  • You can't say that nothing was changed when they added in the Lost Sanctum, Dimensional Vortex, and Arena of Ages, plus moved some stuff around to take advantage of the dual screens on the DS. It's not exactly a remake (like Chrono Trigger Resurrection would've been), but it's not an exact port like the PSX version.

  • It was a port, not a remake. Some stuff was added to it, but it's by no means a remake.

  • Ah, Sakaguchi-san, before he sold his soul to the devil..

That 1000AD map looks awesome :(

  • @Wyrickl33t HAHA thats is funny man, I know exactly what you mean about this comment but to confirm, can you explain what you mean about the seeling of the soul? *cough* milking Final Fantasy *cough cough*

  • They removed some cool techs...

  • Crono walks like Kino! :D I like that town mapping little more than in the complete version..

  • Wow. Crono walks like hes really angry. Kind of reminds me of how simon walks in super castlevania, fists balled up and all.

Also that one handed "rip it out of his chest" crit animation is infinitely excellent.

  • Things look so different, but yet you can tell that a majority of concepts are the same.

  • Also it seems that in case he criticalled, the second slash is just to the side with one hand, which is, for lack of a better phrase, totally fucking awesome.

  • Crono has an oddly different walking stance.

  • Strange, Guardia Kingdom looks alot different, like it's all spread out.

Also, @HisDivineShadow245 - Without these "Fail At Life" Japanese people you seem to call out, You wouldn't have half the stuff in your favorites, so piss off, Wanker. You sound like an inbred christian American from the deep south.

  • eh he sounds more like a liberal hippie from up north

  • Dude that map looks so much better than the final version wtf we got ROBBED! :P

The man on the right though = LEGEND

  • It is NOT the beta.

    Nor the Alpha.

It is from BEFORE the alpha, acctually.

  • Easily--EASILY--among the top 5 games of all time

  • @MyLegendarySelf AMEN TO THAT! Chrono Trigger is EASILY INDEED in the top 5 best games of all time in my opinion also. Its's my personal all time favourite game. On a side note, have you ever played a game by the same developers called "Xenogears" by any chance?

  • ...beta version i presume?

  • Heh, the seagulls sound like something from Super Metroid.

  • Wow, they changed a LOT of things. The original overworld looks like Actraiser and the battle system was really low on the FPS scale.

  • The original 1000 A.D. overworld showed airplanes in the sky.

  • It would be fun if they could remake and release what the game was meant to be...

  • I'm impressed they had scrapped so many of their original designs in developing the final product. That would've been hard for me to do.

  • the rom is avalible somewhere. it says in wikipedia

  • The ROM mentioned on Wikipedia is the so called "Sample ROM", which was available shortly before the release of the final game. That version is very close to the final, but contains some smaller differences and various leftover data.

Think the guys over at the Chrono Compendium has done some good research on that one.

  • This was truly a treat. :)

    Thanks Carnivol.

It was amazing and awesome to see an early version of Chrono Trigger!

Time to look for more! XD

  • wow that's weird... doesn't match up to anything close to the actual game

  • Actual game? The actual game was on SNES.

  • I mean the final version of the game, the one that was officially released

  • The game was officially released on all three SNES, PS and DS, and there was never a final version, just a latest version.

Your reference doesn't really make sense.

    (No offence ^_^)

  • yea, ok. I'd like to see some information about the DS release of chrono trigger because I have never heard of it before.

  • Google "Chrono Trigger + DS" and you will get a lot of information. The first search result is the official game site.

  • that is sooooo unbelievably AWESEOME!!!!!!! cheers! i am so preordering that!

  • DAMN YOU SQUARE ENIX! I like final fantasy and all, but they need to remake the good stuff! Final Fantasy 7 and Chrono Trigger are the best RPG'S of all time in my world.

  • Wooow, that beginning scene of what it would look like looked totally odd. Holy crap.

  • fans have tried to remake it twice already, Clayvion, both times (Resurrection, and Remake Proj) got shut down by Suqare Enix through cease and desist letters in 2004.

  • You mean Square-Enix, right? Nintendo has nothing to do with Chrono Trigger.

  • It's Square Enix. There is no dash.

  • I'm getting smarter! I recognized Sakaguchi by his face but I still can't spell his name lol.

  • You just spelled it right! lol

  • This game will be remade. Eventually.

  • I agree with you Clayvion, it will be.

  • Cool time machine :D

  • Its ironic how beta Crono looks better than current crono, epsecially in terms of animation...

  • Sadly this is far prior to beta CT, lol I have Beta CT; theres really not much different... I think this is an early development alpha that they made to present the project to the public as apposed to a working beta

  • No Crono in the vid. His attacking animation and walking animation are much more fluid and natural than the final ones.

  • Anyone gots a translation?

  • Someone who speaks Japanese needs to redo this video with English subtitles.

  • Even though this vid is old the "remixed" music kicks ass!

  • Yay. Sakaguchi!

  • Wow, the towns look a lot different.

  • Oh, absolutely amazing! Especially due to the fact that I had a dream a couple of months ago that I found a beta build of the 1000A.D. world map that was made in the style of the primitive prehistoric map and I thought wow that was a cool dream. But how I see this video that even though the layout was different, its style looks very much like how it did in my dream... I wonder what that could possibly mean?

  • Its interesting that they used that mysterious unnamed track hidden in the beta rom at the start of the video. I'm won't go over the deep end and say that this version is better than what we got but it still has elements that shouldn't have been removed ( windmills, planes and the hilly land). Also that what I'm guessing to be the beta game intro with the watches and crono isn't all that bad at all.

I wonder if its possible if this build could be hidden in the beta rom.

  • It could be.

If I get enough free time this summer, I will probably check it out! :D

  • By the way, where did you get this footage from? There is a small group of huge CT fans out there (I got a link to this from the Chrono Compendium site, which is an excellent site) who would LOVE to have this in better quality, as YouTube videos are extremely compressed and the quality is reduced a great deal.

  • Wow, NEVER seen this stuff before, and this stuff looks much earlier than the beta cartridge. Early overworld graphics, early versions of the soundtrack music.

I think the reason people are so into beta/alpha stuff is because it's just digging deeper into something you love, you know? Sort of like a "parallel universe", too, seeing things that didn't make it into the final game but at one time were meant to be in the game.

  • I wish it had that kinda music in the american SNES. they really mangled it. :<

  • There's not a difference in the music for the "American SNES" - they are the same system. This is the beta music they didn't end up using in the final product with the same mix.

  • I don't think so, I think this is actually the music played on a higher-quality synth than the SNES one.

  • Perhaps that is the real explanation.

  • lol the seagulls sound like dying dinosaurs :)

  • ROFL

  • I think the reason why people like prototype stuff is because it would look radically different then the final version. Therefore, people would immediately and easily jump to was originally intended.

  • It's just people are used to the same old thing when they finish the game and all that.

People are interested in Betas and Alphas because it's so different from what we got from the final release.

But there's also the idiots that don't appreciate the earlier work of the developers.

  • I would like to see the rest of it. The last guy who appeared before the video ended was Toriyama himself.

  • Awesome. Hey I just killed Dalton, then confronted Magus on the cliff, I also killed him. Should I have not done that? Will I not be able to use him in my team now?

  • Yeah. Only way to get Magus is by not fighting him and trying to leave. If you have absolutely any questions, just msg me.

  • hahah that's what I thought. I knew you can play as him, so when they gave me the option to fight him I figured after I beat him everybody would make nice and he'd then agree to help. Instead he just dies. Good thing I left a save right before that.

  • You're lucky. My first playthrough I killed him as well and started all over again. I sort of felt bad though because Frog is my favorite character and he didn't get to take his revenge :(

  • Technically, if you find Cyrus' Grave and kill Ozzy, you pretty much do get his revenge. Glenn is the best player aside from Magus IMO. If you miss Magus, just complete the game and start over with a + instead of over.

  • Haha that's why I decided to fight Magus. I had Frog as the head of my team and was like shit, how can I not allow Frog to fight Magus?

  • lmfao! you expect to go back in time and party him up after killing him?

  • Honestly, in my opinion, the game looked better in this video than currently. I am a CT enthusiast, so I should know. I have found everything, done everything, read everything in that game. I honestly thought for a split second it was going to be remade. Then remembered what the video was.

  • I gotta disagree.

  • Found this on the LL forum... very nice. Chrono Trigger is one of my favorite games... bookmarking this one for sure. :D

  • Awesome find.

  • Wonderful lost video! It's taken a while for this footage to surface. As a strong fan of CT I found it pretty interesting

  • They should have kept the windmills on the world map. Nothing beats a good WINDMILL! :D

  • Seeing as CT is one of my all-time favorite games, and video game design is something of a hobby of mine, this is really a treat. That Epoch blueprint is nice, I wish there were scans of it available.

  • Carnivol, what other games are featured in this particular V-jump Festival tape?
