  • Which is more advanced Tokyo or Lagos? LOL

  • im a naija boy too but they never show the good parts of africa.... ever this is bullshit

  • Lagos look so chaotic when compared to Accra. But this documentary is interesting. Despite the hardships faced, they have strength in their faith and in God. An inspiring documentary.

  • Street life in Lagos!! you guys always show bad things about african and middle east countries. Why do not show the real Lagos.Fuck of from Turkey

  • Is that french? I can barely understand it.

  • I love the lady here...she is a true african mother...showing love and hope to the Children eventhough surrounded with poverty. I've learnt a lot from her. I will keep praying for my country and government..and contribute my own quarter too to her growth..My family came frm the slum too to wealth. Hardwork sure pays.

  • @chi2uk i was born in the slum, with 2 siblings, a single and hardworking mum. the grace brought us far. hardwork n grace not just hardwork. smtyms i wish i can sponsor a child in d slum

  • I was born in Lagos and i've lived in it all my life....but never been to this place and i have a funny feeling of wanting to go to these water houses...the canoe ride seem so comforting and enjoyable. I don't see anything wrong with d documentary. Rather i see harmony between wealth and poverty.

  • There is nothing contrived about this documentary. Why are Nigerians getting prickly over this documentary? We know this isn't all there is to Lagos but it IS still Lagos. As a southern African, I have a preference for Ghanaians (graceful and dignified), Nigerians too loud and too brash.

  • Niggeria is the asshole of the planet.

  • @ExaltedCyclops2 u would say dat u fuked up confedrate

  • Those of you who are upset by this documentary, you shouldn't be. As an American, this city looks amazing to me and bustling with positive energy. We are used to seeing images of cyclic poverty in Africa but here in Lagos I see people rising out of poverty, getting educations, starting business, commerce and a government that is doing it's job. It's very much like New York in the early 20th century.

  • too dirty!!!! yaks....

  • I really appreciated this doc.

  • looks like south london

  • the is bbc program welcome to lagos.

  • We should be thankful to Aljazeera for this footage! In one way by showing this very doc they have shown that they wish the majority of Nigerians better life. ( A "doc" is enough for the wise?) Please pass on to Fashola, Tinubu Jonathan and the rest. Good people, Great nation - that's our ultimate goal and we shall get there.

  • U all know this is true and we must change the way we live and do things in Africa. Thank God some of us can see the results of greedy rulers and so-called leaders who steal the common wealth of the nation. I pray we shall get to the promised land soon, amen!

  • Canoe...1 tree...houses..more trees...deforestation....flooding....poverty...disease...death...western aid....blame the West for their problems....canoe..1 tree...houses...more trees....on & on & on....who is at fault....they are from overpopulation........

  • emm... its a docmentary for crying out loud. Why are you all so mad about it. I USED to think this way, but as a journalist you can't be biased. What they show here is true and real back at home, so stop acting like kids and accept the fact that this REALLY happens. Its not nice to see, but its the truth, i guess you know the truth is always bitter.

  • It feels like who ever did this documentary ....did it on purpose...Notice he never showed any good part in the country....

  • @TheCollegeguyman some documentaries are just about a particular story not both sides of the coin, if naija was like singapore aljazeera will still come.

  • @TheCollegeguyman Because it wasn't about the "good part of the country". It was about Lagos.

  • i like this documentary cause it does not have any commentary. it leaves you to draw your own conclusions based on the stories that you see.

  • This programme only portrays, in my opinion what is happening all over the world. Irrespective of the motives of the producers of this vid. The degree of corruption and suffering defers from country to country. Every human being all over the world wants justice, economic security, job security and a good standard of living. The problem all over the world as with Nigerian are the establishments (media, politicians and in Nigeria's case, religious elites).

  • nigeria is so corrupted with all the oil money they make, they cant polish half of the country

  • I'M A NIGERIAN!!! AND I GUESS OUR GOVERNMENT AND RICH PASTORS AND OTHER RELIGIOUS LEADERS ARE WATCHING?? It is a big shame that OUR RESOURCES ARE MORE OF CAUSES TO US THAN A BLESSING!! WE HAVE EVERYTHING BUT STILL LACKS EVERYTHING> I don't blame Aljeezra, how long must we pretend as if everything were alright? WE AFRICANS ARE THE ROOT OF OUR PROBLEMS AND UNTIL WE ADMIT IT AND WORK TOWARDS IT, WE WILL STILL REMAIN IN THE DARK..it is very sad but THE TRUTH

  • im suppose to be in Lagos for a seminar am from kenya nairobi anyone with tru picture of lagos cox this as i compare with nairobi i fear

  • this crap doesn't make sense at all..why?... cos the british came and did theres nw its arjazeera......don't tell me u dont have problem in your country....pls, mind ur country

  • This is so wrong, Is all truely well in the native land of aljazeera. This is completely unacceptable. If every nations backside should be portrayed on tv i can bet u that no creature from outer space would want to come to earth

  • I Think it's better for Nigeria to leave Biafra alone and she(Nigeria) will be better because there are a lot of competition going on amongst the tribes in Nigeria - I mean selfish interest on who and who isn't the richest man in Nigeria, and this has indirectly caused a lack of environmental concerns amongst the Tom,Dick and Harry in Nigeria. Nigeria has 371 + ethnic groups or tribes and has 250 different languages apart from English Language which is her official language. BIAFRA says it all.

  • @stevechuks89

Uh?? What are u saying, Mr???

Lmao....Please make better sense next time, Thanks.

  • @stevechuks89 shut ur trap. You cry for Biafra but are you ready to pick up your gun and fight?

  • @LawrenceChidi damn! whod'fuck are you??? Go and tell you Biafran Leaders that. your name is Lawrencechidi and definitely you're an Igbo guy. i'm sorry for you i don't cry but my generation knows no war. we use diplomacy okay and that does not mean that i'm afraid, besides all my relatives fought the Biafran war and i can tell that that spirit still flows in me, Death is ones! "How long will you keep hoping and praying for a better Nigeria bro? answer me. how long???

  • @LawrenceChidi the past generation made mistakes but people like you are known slackers, it doesn't end by guns and other weapons, the world has gone beyond that for minor cases like this which seem difficult. get a life and comprehend.

  • to be candid. Naija government and leaders have to sacrifice a lot of things as regards their selfish interests in Nigeria's wealth. Nigeria is owned by a huge number of people and not individuals, but i hate this. ALJAZEERA!!! i'm sure that you people can help in any way, so we don't want ALJAZEERA. Only Nigerians can help themselves.

  • Ok...well said Aljazeera...but they should also emphasize on our little greatness..ok..but propaganda is always here to show the bad side....

  • i'm so sad about this. aljazeera has to be candid.

  • effing Propaganda

  • @kaybaba2

I've seen a number of comments calling this propaganda. In what ways are they distorting the truth?

  • @sdrawkcabgnipytmi the fact that the media shows only the dark side of African countries and show off the west to be the El Dorado...there are immigrant sleeping under bridges in Paris(yes in the beautiful Paris) , In Spain immigrant are living in ludicrous conditions SO WHAT , ITS A GLOBAL ISSUE

  • The Benin guys are the ones interviewed on BBC's welcome to Lagos. what the hell is happening here?

  • Its so ironic that black people in Nigeria say the exact same thing as black people in America, that they are afraid of the police all the time. LOL

  • This documentary was great.

Took a look at Makoko on Google Earth and couldn't believe the size of this deprivated area.

  • OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Ewwwwwwwwwww!! :Pukes:

  • the garbage dump scenes starting at 14:25 are something you see all over the third world... it's so tragic.

  • where they poo? im guessing directly to the water?

  • Enjoyed the liberating garbAge...Cat Power!!!

  • Superb cameraman, film editing, and music on this file. Outstanding. I felt like I was in the garbage dump, when they showed the garbage trucks unloading garbage and scavengers climbing on top of the garbage that was still pouring out of the trucks. A really well done short documentary. Kudos to all on the project.

  • Are from Benin Republic and u are complaining about the situations of things in Nigeria. This is very simple, go the fuck home to ur own country. if ur country was better why r u in Nigeria????

  • @OgaLentini similar cultures and benins economy is influenced by and depends on naija.

  • @OgaLentini Are you kidding me? The guy lives in Nigeria, and he has every right to have opinion on anything. You should get a life and stop being a dumb ass.

  • T.I.A, man. Meanwhile Shell BP etc are sucking out trillions out of this place in collusion with the tin pot dictators propped by the West to keep the rape of Africa that's been on for 500 years going. Sad, dudes.

  • What ever you want to see about Nigeria,U´´l always find..1st world,or 3rd world. If you are a Nigerian , or have ever lived in Nigeria, you would really know that there is something about that country that is very uniquely beautiful.. The enduring, hopeful, better tomorrow ,happy spirit. Things are happening , but mostly on individual levels. Hopefully we´´ll all come together in bringing that Nation to the great height it deserves..Me. I´´m totalee proud 2 be a Nigerian

  • Sad thing is Jonathan's conscience will still let him spend N3billion on his inauguration after seeing this.

  • man its 2011 and shit hasn't changed!... damn this sucks big time...

  • damnnn.....what is dt kid doing in d dirty water @12.32......not everybody should be lagos period.people just can't c opportunties around dem..too bad...and yet the indians come in and rape d economy

  • Where is Ghida???

  • aljazeera, not only disrespecting nigeria by showing this, also inviting some foreigner African to criticise us also...go back to your country.

  • @originaldelta "some foreigner african" - that mentality of xenophobia doesn't help nigerians when they come to the United Kingdom, so I'd drop it if I were you. "aljazeera, not only disrespecting nigeria by showing this" - by showing the reality of conditions and the migrant workers in nigeria, they are reporting on a story that provides perspective to Nigeria's economic growth. There is nothing disparaging in reporting on migrant workers in Nigeria. You are being irrational.

  • @originaldelta

Oh pleease, will u stop thta!!

If it was Congolese or Zimbabweans being attacked in south Africa, U will all be out there screaming Xenophobia!!!! ... Now u are calling for foreign nationals to leave Nigeria.

  • Comment removed

  • @originaldelta how are they disrespecting Nigeria by creating awareness? nigeria is one messed up country atm, 76% of nigerians live in poverty. this is the kind of awareness that needs to be raised.

  • @johnfrapas Dont mind them

  • @originaldelta Actually I think this is pretty amazing because there aren't many places in sub-Saharan Africa where the economy is thriving and you see people pulling themselves out of poverty. You also see an effort on behalf of the government to enforce rules and regulations. I think we are seeing an industrialized all African nation in the making, built by Africans this time instead of Europeans or Arabs.

  • I'm tired o! My people suffer too much. What kind of country does a man work hard and gets no reward?

  • The ghetto side of the third world of course

  • You have to understand that this channel is owned by Arabs, the same ones that portrayed all black/African Libyans as mercenaries so showing one sided of the most populous and potential power as poor and destitute is very important to them,it makes them feel better about themselves.Every country including UK has horrible sides within then but propaganda is there to show the negative side.We are educated ,we will NEVER be fooled and Africa will be prosperous again.

  • @400yearAfricanplan As a naija boy, norn and bred let's be honest with ourselves these places do exist in naija. In naija bad places out number good places i am just saying, i have been to london and i don't see people people living on water but instead the government build bridges and beautriful landscape to develope the surroundings, naija wake up and develop ur people so that aljazeera will come back and film the development.

  • @beautifulgooal shame on you mr naija boy, why not go to London and stay there permanently and not come back

  • @LawrenceChidi shame on ur father, so u are telling me that this way of life u see in this video is ok for nigerians, u must be out of ur mind. i wanna see a chicago in nigeria, i wanna see hong kong in nigeria not total darkness and muddy roads that u r confortable with. some of us don't like suffer head, even if we do suffer there is got to be a time to say enough is enough, stop importing generators and build alternative sources nuff said.

  • fashola needs to see this video.

  • @400yearAfricanplan No matter what the motive of the filmmaker, the lives portrayed in the film are a reality for the MAJORITY of people (millions!) living in Lagos. Every city has their poor, but how many cities have: DAILY power outages of 20-22 hours, over 60% of population living on one meal a day, no reliable law enforcement, millions living without sanitation or basic public education... Please, let's be honest. as the fifth largest producer of oil in the world Nigeria can do better.

  • Comment removed

  • @400yearAfricanplan So you want only the good to be shown not the bad? Stop whining it's reality/

  • This is like the dark side of Nigeria, too much people, too little resources. Wait, more like people, fucked up sharing of the abundant resources.

  • @400yearAfricanplan O.k so Lagos is more like Bel Air?

  • I love Nigerians!

  • Thank you very much Aljazeera...we would say we prefer to Live in happiness like this and grow gradually rather than adopting vices like Religion which would divide us and cause War amongst our people..we prefer this kind of Living to any outside interference...allow us grow ourselves and stop back sliding us with your media POWER..Remember..ROME WAS NOT BUILT IN A DAY...GOD Bless AFRICA!

  • and the documentary was biased, as always.

  • @sayW0RD in what way?

  • these are unseen clips from another documentary... actually, wth, i have seen all these clips. you can do better Al Jazeera.

  • What a horrible place!! :(

  • amaw man diay ka!

  • Africa leaders r full of words without action. All they care abt is their stomach. All de resources r in abundant yet no better Africa.God have mercy
