The war was lost and she lost all of family and friends. (Hence the made up friends so she don't get lonely and the body of a relative one also background as dusty, burnt and dull) Due to the war, the radio-active from the bombs sent her to deform over the years. Now she lives alone with these made up characters who are to replace the ones she lost.

I don't know if it's true.... it's my guess after watching them all and looking at the things she says/does.

This is what I think happened, There was family living in the house during work war, 'Sald Fingers' was a little girl (Milk comes out her nipples & she runs to her hiding spot which is a small box like room) back then, and she had to stop home while the rest of her family went to war... (she spoke to a body she found saying something about them leaving her behind)

whats wrong with him is that he lost everything in what i assume is world war 1, hence the great war he frequently mentions. his wife is marjory, friends jeremy and hubert, and his brother kenneth, and a sister and had a daughter that i think died while climbing a tree.. they all died in what i imagine is an atom bomb. its all twisted but just lonely salad fingers trying to compensate for what he lost. love the one episode a year series buts its still awesome.

So I just watched this season today... Poor Salad Fingers. So,because I like to spend way too much time over interpreting things, my take so far is that there was a horrible ('great') war and Salad Fingers, perhaps already insane, was not involved in the fight. Maybe he was mutated by something, maybe not. The end of society pushed Salad Fingers over the edge (deeper?) into insanity. He enjoys pain as a punishment for not being able to help his people.

I think they aren't hairs but that they are wires and coil wires from the radio. That's why he calls it a 'special' hair and why Roger the radio says it was quite bad mannered of him to keep one of his hairs and he'd like it back. And it's why the back of the radio is broken, Salad Fingers has been ripping out wires.
