  • This Cardinals baseball fan was only a kid when it happened. CBS had to sell off KMOX-TV because they ran into debt keeping the company away from Ted Turner.

    When CBS owned the station it was during its golden period of ratings dominance, spanning the late 1950s to the mid-1980s. With rare exceptions, everything on CBS was on KMOX-TV (the new KMOV pre-empted at will), and I'm sure people in the area remember it well and miss that era immensely.

  • KMOX became KMOV when Viacom bought the station in 1986. The station is now owned by Belo.

  • In 1986, TV and radio outlets owned by separate companies could not share call letters.  When CBS sold KMOX-TV, it was *required* to change call letters, as KSD(K) did many years earlier.

  • Why lost such famous call letters. Change is NOT always better!
