Gene could be so insecure and awkward. I seriously doubt he would have succeeded at becoming a rock star if not for the make-up. The costumes and make-up allowed him to become someone other than himself.
Read a lot of interviews where Ace said he hated this album with a passion, and it sort of planted the seed for his departure. In comparison to Kiss's vast album catalog, I have to agree with Ace, as this album is a real stinker.
@6672rock I think the "seeds" for Ace' departure were planted long before that. In interviews, Paul and Gene have spoken many times about having session musicians record tracks for the absentee Ace. They've also remarked that they kept a back-up guitarist ready in case Ace arrived to a show stoned; the back- up played off stage while Ace fumbled around on stage. I remember being so dissappointed when I first learned that "Destroyer" was more Dick Wagner and Bob Kulick than Ace Frehley.
@TheLeroyMoon I know Dick Wagner plays on SWEET PAIN for DESTROYER but no where is Bob Kulick. Bob Kulick first plays with KISS on KISS ALIVE II 4 out of the 5 new songs, it was this session that Bob saw Ace in the lounge and Ace said how was I where Bob replied "NEVER BETTER" ummm yeah right Bob?!

"The Elder" should have been called "Grasping at Straws", because that's exact what KISS was doing at this time. Their fanbase was waning faster than Gene's hairline, so they did what they said they would never do: they made an album to try to win critical acclaim. Of course, they failed miserabley and very soon returned to their old form. But many of the fans had moved on and didn't return until the Reunion Tour in '96. It's funny to watch Gene try to explain their about face and fail!

I think the members of KISS looked good here with the exceptionof Paul the purple hair band kills that get-up. I personally think Gene looks a bi tmore sinister with the pulled back hair & pony tail opposed to his usual top ponytail thing going on. I think it would cooler if it were a tad tigher to control the fro-ishness going on though.
Ace, was against the album, friom the start. Bob Ezrin, cut out Ace's solos, most fans were right, Ezrin was being a dick to Ace so, that's the reason why, Ace hated the album, and cannot cooperate with Ezrin.

They could do a tour for it. Play part one, then intermission, then part two...and nothing else. No rock and roll all nite...nothing. As dedicated as KISS fans are today, it would work!

Elder wasnt a weak album..its just an album nobody wanted at the time. I bought it though in '81 and quite liked it. It was better than Unmasked, which was a weak album that doesnt stand up to listen to now.
Sure Ace and Pete were fuckups-lots of great rock and rollers are. Guns n' Roses? Fuckups. Aerosmith? Fuckups. MC5? Fuckups. Dee Dee Ramone? He wrote the fuckup book, along with a good chunk of the Ramones best songs. The Elder and Unmasked? A comparatively weak period for them, so what. And who's to say what a REAL Kiss fan is?
Casey Kasum and Dick Clark both seemed to like KISS. That is reason enough for me to see KISS in the RARHOF. Seems like Ace is mocking this album. The best song on the album is "Escape From The Island". I wish Ace would have included the complete "Dark Light" guitar solo as an extra track on ANOMOLY.

Why has everyone over the last 100,000 Years made the claim - including KISS themselves for marketing reasons - that "KISS changed their style" on THE ELDER?? Their style never changed - ELDER was a dynamite hard rock album with songs more thoughtful than KISS's usual three-chord panty-raiders. It's not "jazz" or "fusion" or "funk" or "hip hop" - it's goddam rock and roll, the "style" KISS have claimed since their inception, since before "heavy metal." Is everybody frickin' DEAF?
Kiss IS gimic, and sucks. Kiss was a marketing veture more than anything else. You never hear their stuff on the radio because han anything else. I've listened to all of their albums, and they sound shit. So what if they've slept with 10 million women.

After viewing this video, I would say a definite Metamorphasis occured for K.I.S.S....they look ten times more dynamic and impressive today than ever before.

Their style never changed - ELDER was a dynamite hard rock album with songs more thoughtful than KISS's usual three-chord panty-raiders. I love Peter but I feel Eric was a awesome drummer and since I am a HUGE Ace fan of course I am not going to like anyone else on the six string after him...Ace was my man just like Gene is to most Kiss fans as well as Peter. And Peter has been replaced for awhile in the Kiss I grew up with. I remember loving his drumming in DYNASTY just to find out it was Anton Fig? Still Peter rules! Every fucking "deep" KISS fan says The Elder is the best Album! I DO FOR ONE! It IS the best album! But that's only because it was so far from the normal "i got laid again" bollocks they always did. I always thought World Without Heroes was the worst track myself. I liked "Just A Boy" and "Odessy". "I" was a good'un too. Shame the film was never made. Or maybe not.
