your grey was very affectionate as a baby. does she still let you scratch her like that? my grey will let me basically tickle him all over but only when he is in the mood. and if i ever tried to put a harness on him he would chomp me good for sure. how about ruby now that she is older?
awww how sweet im getting a baby african gray it will ready to come home in about 4 weeks and i want to harness train it so i can take it out is it difficult to do ? any information or suggestions would be greatly appreciated : )
@xxonehotlennonxx he does enjoy his walk as he sits on my shoulder and he sings and talks but it mainly putting his harness on and taking it off its not a nasty vicious squark
i have a grey we got him aged 3 months he is now aged 14 months. i got ours a feather teather harness which i started using from 3 months old and we take him out on regular walks. but i find my grey squarks still when putting the harness on but i can fit it on him without too much trouble and he squarks when coming to take the harness off. once the harness is on him he is fine and he will sit nicely on my shoulder but if the lead touches his feet he will squark and he chews the harness. any tip?
Beautiful!!! unfortunately my African will not let you touch him around the neck at all... other then that very friendly. She does however let my brother touch because he took of her when she was younger.
You've got a very happy healthy parrot which is always a joy to see! I really want an african grey but the circumstances aren't right just yet. When I do get one it won't be allowed outside, we've got a resident (and very bold) sparrowhawk :-/
@hommie789 she is a congo, you can see that on the beak, a timneh would have a light beak (but only the top of it) .....i dont think you can tell from the eyes....???
@Justcallmekimmy: There's some great harness training videos on youtube. Try looking up Kili Senegal Parrot - Flight Harness Training Day 1. There's a whole series :)
parrots are hard to keep... and have the needs of a 5 year old child... if you don't take good care of them, then will behing mutilating themselves (plucking their own skin and feathers off....).... please dont get one on a whim... research a lot...
@melitic Very true, another thing is that they can live up to around 50 years. That's a long time to keep something which has the needs of a five year old. :P People getting these birds without researching them can lead to heartbreaking stories.
@JadeIsAGoodGirl No, the opposite. She was a baby in the video therefore had dark eyes. Ruby's eyes are now lighter and they go lighter and more yellow as they age.
@lisacleverley very pretty. i am about to purches my first grey he is 8 mo. old should i start taking him outside right away? and where can i get a bird harness
Awesome, and I am glad you mentioned the harness. Even a parrot that has been trimmed can fly away in a breeze especially if frightened. Parrots do not know how to find there way back. They are not like pigeons. This parrot looks very well loved!
@aviannightmare Youre right. Our parrot flew away because she was frightened. We were SO lucky that we''ve got her back. It was a miracle. She landed 4 streets away in the front yard of a house and the owner saw her! even though it was dark. I've never been so happy because she never could have survived on her own
@aviannightmare my african flew away (we were devistated and tried searching for her for 2 whole days) but then a few days later we found her walking on our neighbors backyard (she knew her way back home)
i have a cousin with an african grey congo and i live with her and the parrot is soooo cheeky she swears and everything is that normal? Her name is kanga and she never shuts up she wolf whistles to my boyfriend everytime she sees him
@alibaba9999 Try teriyaki sauce and green onions soaked in mandarin orange juice. No no I'm just kidding. I LOVE birds but I thought you were pretty funny unlike most youtube trolls. Plus everyone in my family has that same dark sense of humor.

I also have an african grey and his name is pepper! Also i have a blue and gold macaw named cheeko and a cockatiel named daisy! So I have alot of experience with birds.
Aww. How old was your grey when you started harness training? My bf and I are getting a grey at about 7 weeks old and I wondered when we should start harness training! Your baby is sooo cute by the way :)
haha she reminds me of my old red collared lorrikeet although he wouldnt let me put a harness on him man he woul eat me alive haha so he used to rideon my jack russels back haha bloody nutty things haha. if you dont mindme asking how much was your african grey?
@MadAidy My Grey I taught him to come to me when i call him so when I take him outside he calm but if he wants to fly, I call and he comes back. Winter is perfect since i don't take him outside anyway and trained him to come using food reward. He is so use to going out with me now that he never flies away till i get him to.
oh i recognise that look in their eyes. Well done for getting the harness on and taking her out..my bird screams and goes crazy if you try get harness on her but she still comes outside but she's clipped and she's smaller, lorikeet
She is SO beautiful. How do you know she's a girl? I am considering getting either a Congo Grey Amazon like Ruby or perhaps a Yellow Naped Amazon. I just can't decide. Despite all the research I've done, it seems that most owners, simply put, are partial to the birds they own. I have heard that the yellow naped are THE BEST talkers of "all the Amazons", but I wonder if it wasn't a sales pitch.
oooh look at her face!! What a lovely girl. My parrot doesn't particularly like outdoors, he gets sppoked by the birds. Has she been out again? lovely Ruby!!! My bird Bob likes ruby too btw...he looks very intently at her on the screen. cute xx
love this bird it so intelligent ...got to get a grey someday,,,did have a cockatail use to talk,,great pets and become part of the family bird,,,thanks for sharing Ruby with us....
shes so peaceful, curious and beautiful...:)She looks like she is silver-blue....it 's one of my favourite colors...That 's it...I m getting one this october!!!!!(i only have 250 till now)
Clipping a birds wings do not guarantee they wont fly. My friends bird had its wings clipped professionally but she was outside with her bird and a hawk flew over and scared the bird and it took off flying and was never seen again! NEVER believe that just because its wings are clipped that it cannot fly.
It depends on the length of the black flighters that is cut. You can have them totally nearly gone for a short hover OR a medium for some shot flights an hover... It just all depends.
Mine's a girl too (named Macy after the singer we like, Macy Grey - they are both African, right ?) -Macy is 13 weeks old and has been outside too INSIDE A LARGE carrier. She loves it. I want to get a harness too. African Greys love the outside Yours was safe -I can see the harness on her.
I've gotta get me one of those. Train it to be a badboy like yours. she's hilarious but sounds like a man. I'm guessing the male of the house trained it? Good lad!
ouuuuuh She is so absorbing her out doorsy moment, she's lovely and you are very lovely "human parents" I understand birds very well and she is not scared at all. xxx
First of all.. Ruby is a SHE, not a he. Secondly, she wasn't scared, she was inquisitive. If she was scared, she would have been flapping around. Last of all, she now loves it outdoors, everyone has to start somewhere!
akonsfan--Actually, Ruby's birdie-body language shows she's super inquisitive and interested in her new environment, and yet feeling comfortable and safe with her owner...From, a Grey Lover
What a beautiful little grey. I love them when they still have the big dark eyes. I wish they had the flight harness's when my two greys were young. They are both almost 20, and I don't think they'd like them now unfortunately. That sure is a beauty you have.
Ruby is a beautiful African Grey. I did not realize that you could put harnesses on them! what a great way to let them experience the outside without fear of them flying away and getting lost and/or hurt.
Hey I hate to be negative but this goes out to all the bird owners all over the world, have you ever seen the documentary The Parrots of telegraph Hill? Anyone Hawks eat parrots. If you live in an area that has Hawks or Eagles I would not advise just lettin your parrot hang out outside. Just google Hawks eating parrots there are tons of horor stories. I have an African Grey and never worried about letting her outside until I seen that gruesome true story.
Oh yes, she loves going outside now. We don't clip wings. I cannot say for your parrot, but Ruby doesn't like to fly outside. She likes flying inside though. She has tried to fly outside a couple of times. It was scary but the harness et her fly in circles so we did not loose her. They are very safe providing you put them on as directed. If you decide to try it, do take a video and let me know. I'd love to see it.
I bet you can't wait for her to start mimicking that pogo stick in the background, haha. She's a gorgeous bird, congratulations.

I've gotta get me one of those. Train it to be a badboy like yours. she's hilarious but sounds like a man. I'm guessing the male of the house trained it? Good lad!

Wow she mush have enjoyed that! My parrots wings arnt cliped so would it be a good idea if i took it outside on a harness? Are Rubys wings cliped?
kayleigh7394 3 years ago
Oh yes, she loves going outside now. We don't clip wings. I cannot say for your parrot, but Ruby doesn't like to fly outside. She likes flying inside though. She has tried to fly outside a couple of times. It was scary but the harness et her fly in circles so we did not loose her. They are very safe providing you put them on as directed. If you decide to try it, do take a video and let me know. I'd love to see it.
Good luck! :-)
