... i i i can't hear the steam train for the helicopter overhead and i c c c can't see the steam train for the s s s smoke ... and i f f f fail to appreciate that the steam train is powered by steam at all b b b because there is a diesel-weasel and not a stoat at the back end of the t t t train ... .
Was this taken from the site of the old station platforms at Burton Salmon? In 1957 when I was a 13-year old kid, a Scarborough-bound excursion slowed to a crawl to lety me off here when I had got on the wrong train! AND the next one through, the York train, slowed to let me on!! Wouldn't happen these days. Thanks for the video.
@mistatomsom What beauty is really what you should have said.
And, that's nothing compared to when Steamers really were themselves and didn't have a bloody diesel pushing for "back up". Rubbish, the steamer wouldn't have broken down with the preservation society of England working on it and because this train had Royalty on board, the use of a diesel killed the meaning of this excursion.
Thank you "UKKarsten", Well done Germany - Water now owned by the French - Gas now owned by the Russians - Electricity now owned by US of A - Houses now built by poles and now Trains built by the Germans. Ah well - What next, Britain run from Tehran. PS There is also a diesel engine hidden in the tender.
@andyZjohnZ I understand your feelings. More and more is being sold to foreign firms, all in the holy name of capitalism and shareholder's profits. Most certainly helped by people preferring to buy foreign stuff.
@ianbillericay no its not its being used as a back up cos prince charles was on the train its the steam loco brakes down the diesel can always push to keep the train moveing
But lots of the parts of this locomotion were made in Germany, specially the Boiler, as Meiningen is the last place in Europe where you can repair or even build new Steam-locomotions... Everyone else decided to forget this interesting technology.
@dreamscape95 "The best" is always a subjective call but I will admit that the Brits do bring it off with a lot of panache and elan. Fast locomotives impeccably maintained by a nation that taught the world how to build fine railways. The peep peep whistles take a bit of getting used to for me, though: the one area where I get insufferably ethnocentric, I freely admit.
Thanks for your kind advice, so kindly offered. I take still photos and just leave my video running on a tripod. If I ever grow a third arm I will pan just for you, until then what you see is what you get.
You're welcome. A more practical and more cost-effective solution might be to have a stunning blonde assistant who does one or the other job for you. Shame about the wasted opportunity though, it was otherwise one of the best video shots on here of the engine's recent run.
Dad and me are dour Yorkshiremen so we left our wimminfolk doing a few jobs. The blonde was digging manure into the allotment, the redhead was training our whippets, and the brunette was donkey-stoning the front doorstep. We put on our flat hats, filled our pipes and leant on a fence watching this steam train whilst dreaming of a nice pint o mild. Gradely. Might have a ride to Barnstonworth tomorrow!

Nice and nostalgic - but these steam locomotives were considerable contributors to polluting the environment. I find it kind of hypocritical of Prince Charles to be supporting this when he speaks out so vehemently about the environment. Whilst Japan, France and others continue to upgrade their rail network with faster and more economical trains, the UK goes backward. Typical!!
There is more pollution in some diesel trains than on tornado! And no the U.K aint going backwards... This is the only steam loco to run on the mainline the rest are all 'economical' and very boring... seeing a steam train is special they havnt run on the mainline for 40 years last year. The only way you can see them is on preserved railways where you have to spend stupid amounts of money...
You say: "Steam locomotives were considerable contributors to polluting the environment" that's just not correct, the numbers don't add up at all! Anyway, in the case of Tornado it's all off-set. Also, Britain IS upgrading the rail network, faster trains etc. Did you think we were converting to all steam? Finally, I can't help noticing that your favourites are full of motor vehicles, now there's real polluttion - a train carries a lot of people.
Well, here's a radical idea: seeing that we have, I saw that someone estimated the other day, 300 years worth of coal left, maybe it might be an idea to develop modern steam locos, for non-electrified routes, rather than relying on imported oil, who can say. Then maybe we could build our own locos once again.
while ever you have a one eyed scottish twat in power that wont happen because he is now trying to kid us all that the future is in electric cars although of course no one has ever built a decent one yet thats any good.and where does the electric come to charge them up.someone should build a newly designed one and see how it goes

That high intensity headlamp looks really out of place. It also needs a lamp on the smokebox door for correct Royal Train display.

There were only 2 years in UK with no main line steam- 1969 & 1970.
Since 1971 there have been special steam trains every so often.....
