I've lived in Australia all of my life and even studied law here for a while.Just about all methods of self defence are illegal here.Done in the name of public safety but it hasn't made my life safer.I've been assaulted several times,have survived home invasions and attempts on my life by a career thug the courts kept on releasing.

Knife laws have been enacted in most states of Australia. While knife homicide is on the increase, the overall all cause homicide rate continues to drop. My point was that when you take away guns, people will find new and more ingenious ways of killing each other. My other point was that the criminals did not turn in their guns. They are still armed. Anyway, the point is that there are many accidental firearm deaths and heat of the moment homicide deaths that are now avoided, 78% of firearm deaths were suicides, the number of all cause suicides has significantly declined since 1996 including a drastic drop in firearm suicide. Self protection is a misdirection that has no basis in evidence, and is a fear monger tactic.

@rb2112002 The counter view is that you *think* you are protecting your family when in fact, having the gun increases the overall risk of death, not just from angry/drunken arguments, but also quick resolution of suicide, and accidental discharge. Measure the number of protective actions vs the familial homicide, suicide and accidental deaths. The protection does not outweigh the costs. The fear mongering tactic: the invaders are going to take your stuff / kill you / rape your women.

@Starpigs92 Lets try Semi auto hand guns up to .45. Fuck .22's little pea shooter will barely wound. .45 max standard 15 round mag. We don't even need assault rifles or machine guns. But Airsoft, Pistols, Sub Machine guns and Shot guns should be legal to own. Have no BAN at all on Airsoft. Make Pistols and shotguns background check. Keep Sub Machine guns for firing range only weapons. That's the bare minimum we should have.
@ActuallyLiam 22's can kill. I don't agree with any ban on Rifles or machine guns. But for items like submachine guns and machine guns there should definitely be a strict leash on those who own them and constant vigilance. My problem with firearms is that in some cases it is as simple to buy one as to get a credit card. Ie a pamphlet that says what not to do and maybe store owner advice. Not enough people know how to safely operate their firearm(s).

Paintball guns are usually so different that they aren't an issue. Anyway, the point is that there are many accidental firearm deaths and heat of the moment homicide deaths that are now avoided, 78% of firearm deaths were suicides, the number of all cause suicides has significantly declined since 1996 including a drastic drop in firearm suicide. Self protection is a misdirection that has no basis in evidence, and is a fear monger tactic.

@rb2112002 The counter view is that you *think* you are protecting your family when in fact, having the gun increases the overall risk of death, not just from angry/drunken arguments, but also quick resolution of suicide, and accidental discharge. Measure the number of protective actions vs the familial homicide, suicide and accidental deaths. The protection does not outweigh the costs. The fear mongering tactic: the invaders are going to take your stuff / kill you / rape your women.

But for items like submachine guns and machine guns there should definitely be a strict leash on those who own them and constant vigilance. My problem with firearms is that in some cases it is as simple to buy one as to get a credit card. Ie a pamphlet that says what not to do and maybe store owner advice. Not enough people know how to safely operate their firearm(s).

@ActuallyLiam Misread. Personally I don't much like airsoft guns. Or any that mimic the shape of known real firearms. Mostly because they are easy substitutes to (bluff) rob people. Paintball guns are usually so different that they aren't an issue. I don't agree with the firing range only bit, but it should be heavily regulated on who gets them and how they are stored/used.Problem with background check is it doesn't check if the person is a dumbass, just if they were caught being one.

Australians have never had a bill of rights. Our constitution never allowed us as civilians the right to bear arms.If you have a valid reason for gun ownership you are not denied owning a gun.Self-protection is not a valid reason for gun ownership in Aus.
When a criminal has a gun at your head your guns will be useless even if you carry them at all times.A criminal wont give the victim 20 paces count to 10 to see if he is able to outdraw or shoot straighter .Guns for self-defense BULLSHIT!!!

You say you are an ex-police officier? You of all people know the minds of criminals. Why would you want ordinary Australians to be able to buy a gun without a license and allow them to possess guns. We have gun laws which protect the vast majority of Australians from the likes of Port Arthur. There is a Shooters Party in Australia for those who desire for the law to change. Why is it that they didn't make a 'quota' in the last Federal Elections? Could it be they are in the minority?
