great work absolutly brought tears to me eyes....the fear in the voice of the captain of the Anderson when they asked him to come about but he still did it what a brave man knowing that he could end up going down just a great peice of work
I am originally from the State of Michigan and it iis my heart-felt opinion that the Michigan Coast Gaurd should be ashamed of thenmselves for sending out the ships that had made t to the harbor of White Fish Bay instead of going out themselves...they knew the conditions of the weather...
To ths day tears fall down my face for the 29 men who lost their lves the day...May God have them with him...May those men always know that they will npt ever be forgotten...
spent years on the east coast...shrimping... not on the Great Lakes....but the best idea as i can see is they broke apart when the trough of the wavevs left No support for the mid of that ship
OK...I've got a confession. I don't have a dry eye. Although I am very familiar with the Fitz, having grown up near the Great Lakes, I never thought to look at YouTube for videos of the disaster.. I certainly got more than I bargained for. Thank you for posting, and keeping the memory of the men alive.
A tear and warm hearted salute to the skipper of the Arthur M. Anderson......and the Men of The Edmund Fitzgerald....May they all rest in wonderful peace.
Captain Cooper has my total respect. He was willling to turn his ship around and to go back to those rough and dangerous waters to search for the Fitz.Talk about bravery!! May he RIP.
Give that Captain of the Arthur M. Anderson a medal for turing around to look for the Fitzgerald and her crew!!!! That man is the bravest sailor ever!!!! Wow what a man!!!! I hope he is remembered for his bravery!!!!!
My father Wendell E. Routhier was the Chief Lock Master at the Sault Locks, he waited to here from the Fitgerald and had talked to the Anderson. Dad new both Capts. My dad passed on Aug 5 2009. RIP from your loving daughter he loved and hated Gitchagumee
I can remember my Dad singing the song by Gordon Lightfoot when I was 10 or 11 years old, must have been not long after it was released and he had learnt the words! My dad passed away last year. He grew up on the water and was fascinated by the lakes and the oceans, and the fact they can be both beautiful and treacherous. He would have loved this video. Well done. RIP crew of the Edmund Fitzgerald. RIP Dad
A true act of bravery by Capt Cooper and the Anderson for going back looking for the Fitz, despite the tone in Coopers voice how he was worried for the safety of his own ship.
@burker1301 "Damn you realize I am going to take a beating out there ?" was this brave skippers reply. 80 mph winds, 25 ft waves, etc and to turn back is pretty brave. They did find the first debris of lifejackets. But you are right; to go back in to that storm is heroic.
damn..i was just a kid when this happened,it touched my heart then, gordon lightfoots' song touched it later and this is easially the most powerfull thing i've heard concerning the Edmund Fitzgerald...R.I.P......
O Eternal Lord God, who alone spreads out the heavens and rules the raging of the seas, receive into your protection all those who go down to the sea in ships and occupy their business on the great waters. Preserve them both in body and soul, prosper their labors with good success, in all times of danger, be their defense, and bring them to the haven where they would be, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Rest in Peace fellow mariners- Crew of the M\V Jack D. Wofford
I've read extensively about the Fitzgerald disaster. Many freighter captains that have been on the ocean as well as the lakes have said that conditions on the Great Lakes can be as bad as anything they've experienced on the ocean. To this day an exact cause of the wreck of the Fitzgerald cannot agreed upon.
You realize what the conditions are out there don't ya?? Listen to the pleading. This man KNEW that the Fitz was down. He had to search his soul because the possibility of Anderson going down was very real.
this was amazing. i still cant believe it was 36 yrs ago today. I wasn't born when it happend but i always have and always will honor the 29 men who lost their lives. I listen to the song every year on nov 10th. and i will always have a moment of silence. if i had a bell it would ring 29 times
@ilmsff7 I remember hearing that they were the only ones willing to back out (not sure if thats true). They were very brave. I looked up the Anderson on google. It's still a working ship. This video is very well done, IMO
It`s hard to listen to this. When they are asked to return to the Fitzgeralds last known location and he mentions the conditions that`s the hardest thing in the world to do. Inside he knows men may still be alive, but he also knows the conditions could sink him as well so it becomes a inner turmoil. It`s a position that nobody wants to be in.
Wow you REALLY did some intense work cleaning up the original radio recordings. They are incredibly noisy, yet hear they are quite intelligible. Nice work.
Captain Jesse Cooper was actually off the bridge when McSorley delivered his infamous "We're holding our own" statement. It was First Mate Morgan Clark whom McSorley was speaking to. I just find that an interesting bit of trivia for you.
God that music is annoying and it interferes with the dialogue of the recording. Why do people feel the need to slap music on absolutely everything that is posted on youtube?
@GeoXTC because the music adds to an otherwise dry dialogue.I personally think that the whole thing is a well made presentation that works well.Whoever put it together has done very well.
@gonnafragu300 The SS Daniel J. Morrell was a 603-foot Great Lakes freighter that broke up in a strong storm on Lake Huron on 29 November 1966, taking with it 28 of its 29 crewmen. Not the same storm as the Big Fitz.
You can tell in the voice of the captain he didn't want to go.Man that must have been bad.The fact they did go back speaks volumes of their bravery...........This is the best video of events surrounding the sinking of the Fitz.Well done
When there's men in the water, you have to go back out for them, no matter how bad a storm is. "They would do that for you"! The Anderson crew were brave, they were hero's even though no one was found. So Tragic! RIP Big Fitz!
This portrays extremely well all the drama, the hope, and the tragedy of the original event. Very, very moving. You did a remarkable job on this video.
What a great job you did with making this video! Thank You for posting this video for us! This video,...In my opinion is the best on regarding to the Edmund Fitzgerald here on YouTube,..... Or anywhere that I've seen for that fact!!
Dont fuck with the lakes.

How ridiculous and irresponsible was the Coast Guard to ask the Anderson to go back out there? So instead of one ship lost there'd be two!!
