I followed her instructions and rooted in water. It really does take a month for enough roots to form, after which you'll see grass. That's when I transplanted to soil. Note that the roots are thick and inflexible. If you want separate plants, put the stalks in different cups, preferably cups wide at base.
I started with semi-dry stalks and I never changed the water, yet it still did very well. I guess that's why she starts off by saying it's a grass -essentially implying that it's idiot-proof.
i got lemmon grass stems 2 days ago i want to plant it bcause i love tea specially lemon grass tea :) the thing is i left it in the car trunk for one night and i was freazing cold. it dryed out a bit but i put it in water last night so i hope hope it grows! ive got about 4 or 5 stems. so, should i plant them all together or separately? also its really cold out side so i think i'll keep them in a cup untill spring, mean while how ofter should i water them? thnx :)
Over here they don't sell these in the shops, I had to buy "seeds" from Ebay, about 2000 of them actually got me 4 or 5 plants, it's ok the harder they are to get, the more attached I get! haha
I bought 4 lemongrass stalks from my Asian market. I used 1 for cooking and put the other 3 in a glass container in an southern window. I had to change the water about every 5 days or so. They now have roots growing. It only took 2 1/2 weeks.
hi, as the video says, you can pick some up at the local asian grocery store. i myself have not noticed the seed or seeding part, but i pretty much always see them on sale and then create the plant in the same way, putting them into some container with water, before planting outdoors.
I grew lemon grass around Chicago successfully from spring to fall. The lemon grass really picks up when it gets warmer. I went from a piece twice the size of my finger to a huge potter full of a yard tall grass. Great smell, great for food. Be careful the grass is really sharp.
thank you for your great videos! Can you tell me do you change the water daily or weekly or other? Because the water will evaporate eventually. thanks.
rub lemon grass on yourself, or blend them in a blender and make a spray and it keeps mosquitos away. check out this website for how to blend: journeytoforever.o
Your information was very useful. In early July I started to look for sources of established lemon grass plants but found that commercial sources were not shipping. Heartened by your video I asked my wife to pick up a stalk on her trip to the grocery store. I was not hopeful when she returned with a plastic box with 4" pieces, but my optimism returned when the neatly trimmed base end I placed in a glass of water started to grow out of the cut end.
thanks. Question answered.

also, matured lemongrass has stronger scent as well so i don't think they are suitable for cooking. use them as a natural repellent instead

to my knowledge only matured lemongrass produces seeds.

if i planted 1 lemongrass stalk would that produce many more stalks? or would the 1 stalk just grow bigger?

I would have liked to see some stalks with roots after soaking in water for 2 months.

@gpparsons it actually starts rooting within 1-2 weeks, during summer time it's a lot quicker

Do I cut the grass back at anytime of the year ? My grass looks very ordinary and it's two years old.
