Anyone that can do a one-finger tremolo like that makes me feel like a pretender. Did Segovia ever do one-finger tremolos? To understand the difficulty of this try to play a piano concerto with your left hand and pat your head with the other.
this is ridiculously impressive. of course the orchestral version sounds more complete, but seriously this is pure talent. just shut the fuck up and appreciate it
Reminds me of Kazuhito Yamashita's arrangement. I consider Yamashita's arrangement superior, and truer to Karajan's interpretation of the work-- but that in no way means that this is not an excellent piece.
That's Kazuhito Yamashita's unique arrangement.Have no doubt ! Jorge play it superbly and " KistnerJ" should have mentioned the author of the transcription: KAZUHITO YAMASHITA.
Maestro hermosa interpretacion , lo vi tocando esta obra en Mexico en el festival Ramon Noble y me parecio sensacional no habia visto a un guitarrista con tanto virtuosismo y al mismo tiempo una gran musicalidad .
I know this work very well. Trust me when I say it is "all there." The crazy thing about Caballero is not just that he can play this, but that it is utterly clean, and he makes it look EASY. sanjosemike
i feel that if you accept the transcription on its own terms, you realize that caballero has created a masterpiece out of a masterpiece. its not the orchestral version, but its still a great piece of guitar music
what a phenomenal performance and transcription... i can see where what567 is coming from but i personally believes this performance stands on a level of it's own
whether or not it does work is dwarfed by the fact that he is playing an entire symphony on the guitar, an amazing accomplishment given the fact that just over 100 years ago the guitar was barely considered a concert instrument. transcriptions like this help propel the classical guitar into of the 21st century demonstrating the amount of music that this small six stringed instrument can handle. given the all the folk idioms in this piece it suits the guitar very well, it finds new life.
J C is really a miracle: this Summer he was suddenly asked, during his vacation, to replace, within two days, John Williams at the Iserlohn Guitar Symposium. He came all the way from New York to Germany and played the New World Symphony, still with a jet lag, and majestic organ works by Bach and even the Alban Berg Piano sonata. Unbelievable!
I don't think What567 meant any offense. This is really great playing and no one can argue that. But I'm not convinced that this piece works very well as a guitar arrangement.
@ClassicalGuitarBlog I agree with you completely... great playing for sure, but this piece loses POWER without a symphony. Still cool to hear and impressive. This guy is a monster. Yes, I am captain obvious!
@what567 because it sounds cool. same reason you'd listen to an instrumental version of a popular song or listen to a singer other than the original artist do their own version of it.
There is no doubt that Caballero is an excellent player. However, think about this: how many pianists would you see playing a piano reduction of a symphony on a concert program? Probably not many. I'd rather hear some great guitar repertoire that a reduction of a symphony to solo guitar, in which much of what is IN the full orchestral version will be lost. To be concise: if I had to choose between listening to this, and the symphony played by an orchestra, I would choose the symphony every time.

I've seen the sheet music for this. It actually has two separate music staff, like the sheet music for the piano. Too complex and complicated for me.

Still, if anyone can pull it off, it's Caballero.
