Once had a Jim Beam and cocaine-induced threesome with Farah Fawcett and Lee Majors in his trailer on the set of the Six Million Dollar Man. I'm 51 one now. Happy days.
This is not a classic. All that was wrong with the '70s smooshed into one leaking container. It's just missing a disco soundtrack. The story of a dirty old man and his friend's ugly robot. Have we not been hurt enough by Logan's Run? That's right, I said it.
Elmer Bernstein's score is good. I'm not sure who this film was intended for. It's a hodge-podge of various things. Shame that John Barry died when he did. He really wanted to direct this film.
My understanding was, that he was gonna direct and do art direction, but studio got cold feet about his inexperience as director and got Stanley Donen in. So Barry went to help out G. Lucas and co. on Empire Strikes Back, a film he had to turn down initially. Then he died sometime during 1979.
I have Alan Arnold's great book, which documents that period very well.
They need to remake this movie. Hector (the robot) scared the shit out of me when I was little. I know it originally flopped at the box-office; however, I think it was just ahead of its time. If done right, I think the plot and the dark concepts would do extremely well today.
@websslinger yeah, scarred me to death. recently i heard a song of the band mnemic late at night i couldnt figure out i felt really uneasy. after numerous listening i realized, these swedish maniacs sampled that horrific sound hector makes when he powers up.....in wrote them an email and they confirmed - and asked me if i was crazy or have real good ears or both.
Hector looks like the illegitimate son of Johnny 5 & the Terminator. Not even Angel Farrah Fawcett could drag this movie out of the toxic waste tank. I remember.
@maxxoccupancy I can agree with you ,but the funny thing is,how things are lifted from older movies and put into the newer ones, like that neck jack port thingy,it's also in the movie Johnny mnemonic ,and the Matrix, and Saturn 3 tried to get that same claustrophobic feel from the movie Alien.
@RXQ79 I’d like to listen to SATURN 3 in vintage classic DOLBY STEREO 4.2.4 matrix I don’t think they struck 70mm six-track DOLBY STEREO discrete prints. I only saw it once on TV years ago, some 10 or more years and it was in DOLBY STEREO NICAM725 digital sounded cool on the score nice deep bass. I see there is a region1 DVD is it in DOLBY STEREO and W/S 1.85:1?
cult movie !!

Well, Farah looked great there. Film was okay but kind of rode the Alien movie fad.

Barry tried, but he was usurped.

@agfagaevart I thought that Barry died during pre-production of 'Saturn 3'. Was he replaced as director during filming?!!!

@agfagaevart Thanks. Is the Alan Arnold book 'The Making of T.E.S.B'. I read it a few months after the film's release in 1980.

@Numinous20111
Yes. And the Making of ESB which came out last year (I think ) is EVEN better!!
Pricey now though.

I watched my DVD of this yesterday. Classic.
Worth watching just to see Harvey Keitel getting beaten up by a naked Kirk Douglas - hilarious.

I've forgotten how beautiful Farrah Fawcett really was,her acting got better in the 1990's.

Nice job...was fun to watch, and even though the film was a little cheesy, still was a classic!

In space, no one can hear you get up and walk out of the movie theater. Truly, one of the least accomplished films of all time.
