  • music is meant to touch the heart, and is a way for the artist to express themselves in their choosen art. I think Gotye is amazing! His art definately made me take notice. Soooo cool!

  • looks like a part from war of worlds

  • i almost got a heart attack when at 0:09 a monster punch to my head...

  • TOOL meets salvador dali

  • Comment removed

  • It's been bugging me seeing that "Purity Ring" song off to the right on like every video

  • this video is like the old TOOL music videos:)

  • similar to sting and KATE BUSH and PETER GABRIEL

    san jose,ca

  • Kony 2012

  • this looks like something you would see on the movie Caroline now thats a creepy ass movie...

  • It sounds so different, it looks like a gust of fresh air to the ears.Thank God if you exist, to have created Gotye

  • @DIVINADADY clearly u have never heard of a band called the police , he sounds the same

  • @linken01 he does sound very similar, my father and I were just discussing this several moments ago. Gotye has great music but sounds similar to sting.

  • It's easy to say "rips off" other musicians ,but that's really ridiculous. Everything now in some way builds off the past - whether art, music, politics, etc. An artist may rebel against or be inspired by those who came before.

  • I dunno, he just rips off a lot of older musicians Sting,Peter Gabriel,Lindsey Buckingham etc etc

  • @twitterusernamebk09 "Nothing is original. Steal from anywhere that resonates with inspiration or fuels your imagination." - Jim Jarmusch

  • @twitterusernamebk09 You only say that because his voice sounds similar. Gotye is one of the most unique and talented artists out there at the moment.

  • @nashfur thanks mate :)

  • 173 people missed the like button how cock-eyed

  • its like Sting and Peter Gabrial's vocal cords had a baby

  • 1. Put on headphones.

    2. Crank volume to maximum.

    3. Sway head to chorus.

    4. Repeat.

  • wht is the meaning of gotye ?

  • @givemeyourlambo Wouter "Wally" De Backer (born 21 May 1980), also known professionally by his stage name Gotye, (pronounced Go-te-yae), is a Belgian-Australian[1] multi-instrumental musician and singer-songwriter. The name "Gotye" is derived from "Gaultier" (or "Gautier" or "Gauthier",) the French equivalent of "Wouter" ("Walter" in English.)

  • KONY 2012

  • In love with this song, obsessed with Gotye!

  • i meant a new start to the song...not star..

  • when gotye played on the jimmy kimmel show , he had a new star to this song.. its great...

    /watch?v=kLmrqW1jElo&feature=relmfu

but theres a 13 sec ad at frist.. dumb, but worth waiting and watching.

  • sting+ozzy+panic

  • Sounds like Panic! At the Disco.. Love it [:

  • @EclipseShotz

I don't think he sounds a thing like Panic! personally. 0-o

  • Ugh. Rediscovering how much I love Gotye.

  • We meet again 480p

  • Sounds also like Chris Deburgh. Listen to "Don't Pay the Ferryman". Great song/album from 80s.

  • i think i get this video the guys in the boats with legs what ever they are they drop the buckets to try to fill them with water so they can replenish their masks/faces but they keep getting sand/dust or bones im guessing this keeps them alive and they have their EYES WIDE OPEN for water and if they dont find any they are risking their lives so they are WALKING THE PLANK as they go through time this is just my theory also great song its hard to stop listening to his music!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • His eyes are amazing.

  • His voice also resembles the dude of the Shins.

  • It's more like Peter Gabriel.

  • @dilworthtravis

    Indeed

  • i have to admit i didnt know him before somebody i used to know but now i just cant get enough

  • The animation scares the shit out of me.

  • good...it's supposed to...react!

  • if this video scares the shit out of you...do something about it....ours isn't the first civilization to totally vanish from history.

  • @richerb21 THANK you!! Sooner people start accepting that, the sooner everyone stops sweating the small stuff...

  • @richerb21 and which civilization is this?

  • @richerb21 What, like Atlantis or something?

  • @richerb21 we're all going to die lol

  • @richerb21 Every empire will end and every race will die. But out of death new life gets birth. It is our duty to keep the planet clean.

  • @richerb21 How do you know civilisations have vanished from history? If they had 'Vanished' then you wouldnt of even known they existed.

  • Love the animation!

  • If anyone says he sounds like Sting one more time, I'm going to slice my nads off! WE KNOW!!!!!

  • Gotye is a genious! and, he's kind of attractive, in a weird kind of way

  • @vi000la I like to think he looks a bit like Christian Bale and that's why I get lady boners for him

  • @margoleefluffypants who is Christian Bale?

  • @vi000la Batman!

  • @roney76 ahaa, i kind of feel stupid not knowing who it was

  • I am praying this song doesn't end up on the radio, because it will be so overplayed like all the other rubbish andbad remixes could be made of it... I don't want this song to ever be ruined for me.

  • @14zimm rest assured. It wont happen. Mass media doesn't like pushing politically driven music unless its a safe bet. Only if someone who's a household name does it, will they try and sell it based on name alone (kanye, adele, rihanna, etc). Which ironically, is the theme this song tries to antagonise (mass consumption etc etc.) So if you wanna get heard on the radio your best bet is to write a song about a bad break up. About somebody that you used to know *ahem*.. so to speak.

  • @14zimm i know what you mean! i heard somebody i used to know months back now it its on the radio like crazy!!

  • @14zimm So? Who cares? Don't act like a hipster. If you truely love this bad you should allow them to expand and do what they want to do. If they get on the radio, they make more money which means they can create more great songs like this one. The music ind. is hard to get your foot in the door and when people tell them what to do it makes it harder. Especially when its their fans who are keeping pressure on them to not do stuff.

  • @Templarknightish I don't mean it in that way, Gotye is from my city- I completely support and hope for Gotye's success! I already know that he is successful though and becoming more so, his song 'Someone that I used to know' has over 100 MILLION views on YouTube. I just adore this song, and hope I can continue enjoying it, without becoming sick of hearing it constantly on the radio... That's all I'm saying!

  • @14zimm If you're sick of overhearing songs on the radio couldn't you like

    uh

    turn the radio off?

  • @14zimm Bit selfish if you ask me.

  • @14zimm Music is ment to be shared mate, I like the idea of someone different hearing it for the first time and getting it stuck in there head all day :P

  • @14zimm Too late, hit the radio today.

  • @14zimm this song started playing on Australian radio in 2010... just putting it out there.

  • @14zimm Thats selfish.. i dont think he made this song so it could stay hidden. this song has a story and need to be shared. Radio Airplay would be the fastest way to share and it would bring Gotye a lot of success.

  • @14zimm you sound like a nob. Music is meant to be heard. i wouldnt of even known about this song if it wasnt for another of their songs being on the radio.

  • @14zimm you're so right... that's why I never choose too beautiful songs for ringtones :)

  • KONY 2012

  • as Esthero sings(on MUSICAL REVOLUTION) I´m so sick and tired of the shit on the radio and mtv always play the same videos no matter where I go I see trash on the videos ,i want something mooooore¡¡¡¡¡

Gotye its part of that musical revolution ,love it¡¡

  • great music and really meaningful lyrics ,there should be more music that touches us and make us feel and think,GOTYE haves talent and a very good taste,I hope America could have artists like him instead of pimps and players singing about booze, sex, bitches, drugs crime and material things, same with the ladies that just portrays themselves as sexual objects in halloween costumes and thinks shaking ass an tits its cool...Gotye´s music its art ¡¡

  • @Wild20099 I blame hip-hop. Just sayin'...Gotye is leading us to a brighter musical future!

  • KONY 2012 look it up.

I'm sure Gotye would support this.

  • What is going on in this video?!?

  • @hughmanwho My interpretation: I think it talks about how we all know that the path we are walking on and the things we are doing are eventually leading us to our own destruction but since we havent felt any actual drastic effects we just keep doing what we are doing. You see the ''aliens'' looking for water to fix their cracked faces, cuz under their masks are humans who are fragile to the new intoxicated world we made.If you really read the lyrics, the song will make alot of sense :)

  • @hughmanwho To my understanding, it's Gotye's imagery of the consequences and devastation that we are bringing upon ourselves through neglect of nature/the world around us. The people are left hiding behind masks for safety, constantly searching for water (an essential element for life).

  • So glad my hampton roads radio station 96.1 now plays this and "somebody that i used to know" all the time. Thumbs up so your radio stations will too!

  • Its not just Gotye's music vidoes that are wierd, in fact a lot of popular alternative genre music videos are even wierder than this, just embrace the wierdness, because that's the point, you can have a wierd video and get your point across, you can be wierd, different, and get your point across your way.

  • so good, I feel I want to know more about it when it suddenly stops.

  • If Sting was better he would sound like Gotye

  • Why does this video show cooling towers blowing down evaporated water? I don't understand the relevance to the song. Probably just misleading people

  • @hildebrandt101 Its called artistic license. Its art, it doesn't always have to make sense.

  • @hildebrandt101 It's about the devastating effect humans are having on the world due to neglecting to change our bad habits. The video demonstrates the end result and the humans' futile attempt to scrape any life sustaining remnants from the wasteland. Consider the lyric: "It was like to stop consuming was to stop being human"

  • Reminds me of Pink Floyd..

  • Addicted to this song, had it one repeat for ages! Love it! :-)

  • me like this shit :D

  • This song... is.... so... powerful!

  • this is a song to bike quick or run hard XD dunno why lol

    I REALLY LAAAAAAAAV IT!

  • my dreamworld<3

  • Anyone else find that his voice ressembles a lot like Sting's voice from the Police?

  • @dbarbeau15 Very much so - I was thinking exactly the same thing.

  • @dbarbeau15 THe first song I heard, I said he sounded somewheres between Peter Gabrial and Sting. When I looked him up, thesecond line on the wiki was, "Gotye's voice has been compared to Sting and Peter Gabriel". Score.

The video, on the other hand, is very reminicsent of "The Wall"

  • @dbarbeau15 I think everyone finds that.

  • @dbarbeau15 sting is sting ... bitch...

  • @rockthepenguins an opinion is an opinion.. ass...

  • @dbarbeau15 YES!!! One of my favourite parts about him.

  • @dbarbeau15 looks a bit like sting too.

  • @dbarbeau15 It' more like Peter Gabriel

  • lyrics are amazing

  • wtf did I just watch

  • a vision of our future

  • These guys' whole image reminds me of 30 seconds to mars.. just not as depressing

  • The lyrics in this are amazing. I would reccomend everyone to go see him live, I seen him on sunday and he is acctually so amazing to watch perform.

  • I thought he was saying "I hope we can plank with our eyes wide open..."

  • extra

  • We do want to make a change Gotye.

  • damn this songs too short. wellp rape replay button it is.

  • I couldn't listen to that little bit at :53 all day.

  • Goyte's music is minimalistic and beautiful (nice slide guitar in there) while his lyrics and videos are much more nihilisticly poetic. This doesn't make it simple or "easy"...if anything this is much harder to pull off....the singing and musicianship has to be be spot on perfect. There is no room for error with such a sparse accompaniment, but he's pulls it off nicely. Very well done "pop" music.

  • @richerb21 sorry about the typo Gotye :)

  • Genius. In every way.

  • he reminds me of phil collins.

  • wow, i remember when this song only had like 400k views.

  • Reminds me of Peter Gabriel :D

  • i found out about this guy 2 days ago, i watched his song "somebody"that i used to know and i was hooked, great artist realllly, his voice is amazing, his lyrics are so great.....GOTYE...<3

  • what kind of genre would you say this kinda of music is? i love it.

  • @adrenaline93junkie Sort of indie/pop/electronic is what I think it may be classified as :)

  • @adrenaline93junkie this is alternative music, the problem with alternative music is that it is one of the most diverse genres, it could be this good stuff, with other bands like Young the Giant, you can find absolute no name bands that put no soul in their music and sound monotone, and then there's alternative emo.

  • why is it that all best seem to finish so quickly:(

  • i can hear the musical fence :) xx

  • Schedules and inspiring video. Message a bit like M.J's "The Earth Song" You agree?

  • OMG, i love this song well, all of his album, making mistakes, his video's are actually amazing but also really strange. xxxxxxx

  • Weird take to war of the worlds

  • j'ai pensé à peter gabriel aussi en voyant les clips qui sont créatifs , ça change un peu , ce son clair :D

  • y a du peter gabriel dans ses musiques

  • OMFB "Most people won't like this cause its real. Its not the usual Drake bullshit that gets posted. Someday, and all signs point to soon, there will be a race of beings that explore the ruins of our planet and marvel at our careless destruction of our civilizations. Completely dumbfounded as to how our species could have inherited such a beautiful planet, consumed all of its resources, and used them to destroy ourselves. This video is nothing short of a stroke of genius. I absolutely love it."

  • I love the post apocolyptic narrative of how humanity destroyed its existence. The story is great and the lyrics are powerful, it is not too late for us to make changes but sadly he is right we are headed for total destruction. We will have only ourselves to blame. If this were played as often as drakes bullshit songs on the radio more people would listen.

  • Do you see the dislike bar?

    Me neither. :D

  • this video is an amalgam of sorts... it's like a crazy present-day combination of dali, warhol, o'keefe, tim burton, nukes and nature...... reminiscent of some scenes of The Wall.... but then of course this is Gotye, it's simply awesome!

  • This makes me want to commit suicide. I mean, the video, the lyrics... they all seem so real to me. It's sad that we're leading on to our own destruction

  • Wow, honestly found him about a week ago. Love it, an industrail feel with some soft edges. like the lyrics, just unique sound & story.

  • "we made out like we heard, they were only words... they didn't add up to a change in the way we were living"

  • I found out about this guy literally 3 days ago, now I can't stop listening to his music. A great voice, meaningful lyrics and beautiful music...this is what should be played on the radio and TV channels.

  • @MsSarahCookies This IS what is played on TV and radio...

  • @DeathBySeizure Not around here it isn't. And even if it is, compare how many times radio stations play this song and how many times they play Nick Minaj's songs.

  • @MsSarahCookies I guess. But it's all about listening to the right stations.

  • @MsSarahCookies My story exactly :D

  • @MsSarahCookies You didn't happen to hear of him from Kandee, did you?

  • @ladyssnape Nope. Never heard of Kandee :D

  • @MsSarahCookies You and I are in the same boat.

  • @MsSarahCookies i di yesteday.

    He's amazing!

  • @MsSarahCookies ikr! my sister showed me this song

  • @MsSarahCookies So true but sadly your best chance of hearing his stuff is on the few alternative radio stations. Commercial radio stations at least up to now have largely ignored him. It may be surprising to know that even in OZ where STIUTK was a number one selling single for 8 weeks in mid 2011 that it was only the 55th most played song on the radio. They are only interested in pushing the big record label stuff. You could say my eyes are now wide open to that.

  • @irradiatedbunny You guys should move to Western Washington. They play it like every other song.

  • @ChaoticCookie37 Great to know he is getting more airplay stateside. I wonder how much of it though is that for the US he is signed to a major record label In Australia he is still out on his own independent label. His last album Like Drawing Blood had lots of critical acclaim but still relatively little airplay on the commercial stations. If people haven't already done so you should check out the stuff on the last album which is pretty awesome too .

  • @MsSarahCookies

Quite obviously a male version of Kate Bush, but by christ can he write a good song

  • @MsSarahCookies I too have only heard the song Somebody I Used to Know and yes, great stuff!

  • this is music

  • 170 people have their ears closed shut obviously.. Do they not hear the brilliance in this Gotye's guy's voice and music, Damn..

  • another awesome song! how the fuck did I knot know of this guy sooner!

  • @doooder69 because all MTV and the TV media play is Justin Bieber, Lil Wayne, Nicki Minaj garbage.. I wish I knew this guy sooner as well..

  • I get the Sting/Phil Collins comparisons but does anyone else get a Billy Joel feel to this song? Pretty awesome. Plus it's about time someone getting this much recognition actually has talent, a message, originality, and makes some really interesting videos to top it all off.

  • This Gotye guys is pretty chill.

  • @mananacl Stoned brah? haha

  • Fact is...WE take what we want from OUR planet but never give anything back. We are walking towards our own destruction......why hasn't anybody stood up and done anything about it yet????

  • its about time for another phill collins/sting band!!!!!!!! YESSSSSSS!!!!!!!!

  • ay this guy was on acid for this video to happen.

  • The message in this video isn't really "hidden" >>;

Also, sadly, nothing will change, messages are being screamed at us from many sources and most of us won't do anything.

  • This is so beautiful and tragic at the same time..ahh Gotye.

  • This should tell us we all know what bad and evil things we are doing and what the consequences are yet we keep Walking this Path to Destruction while the Devil Tricks us the whole way down. Follow the Light Fight the Good Fight!

  • Think I may have just found my new favorite band.

  • how do you know if you're interpreting it correctly?

  • this song, if interpreted correctly, along with the video. could really start to change things. Gotye is such a fantastic artist, amazing
