I did watch the vampire diaries from DVD, and then there was this song. I did spend half of this day by searching this song from youtube... go me, I did find it!!
i love the lyrics but kate bush just does it a little bit too upbeat i mean this is a song about suicide and talking to ghosts and such i dont think hardcore keyboard belongs but thats just an opinion
@GaLsMaNN it's not about suicide.. i don't think this is as affecting as the original when it's downbeat and sung with less theatricality, but to each their own of course. someone from spin or maybe q magazine said that placebos version sounds more like a deal with the devil than a deal with god.. i totally agree with that. much respect for placebo approaching it from a different angle instead of just trying to copy it!
@GaLsMaNN "I was trying to say that a man and a woman can't understand each other because we are a man and a woman. And if we could actually swap each other's roles, if we could actually be in each other's place for a while, I think we'd both be very surprised! [Laughs] I think it would lead to a greater understanding. And really the only way I could think it could be done was either.. you know, I thought a deal with the devil, you know. And I thought, 'well, no, why not a deal with God!' - kate
@0ntology sorry i miss understood the song then. usually take pride in the fact that i know what a singer means when they sing i appreciate the incite and enlightenment
@GaLsMaNN but that being said, if the song is about suicide to YOU, don't let the artists original intent ruin it. and the somber tone of placebos version fits the suicide idea well. there are plenty of songs i get different meanings from than the artist intended, a lot of them kate songs actually!
@psaionyx that 'female" sound you hear in the background...isnt kate bush....thats in all the versions of this song...its the dude playing guitar making that sound.
@onemoreghost Yeah you're right that's ... funnily, that you count yourself amongst crying children and abused puppies. Maybe if you listened to some feel good music and stopped taking internet comments so seriously...
Anyway, By your logic the only opinion worth having is one that doesn't offend one of the billions of people on this planet. Im no mathematician but I think the odds on that one are pretty slim. Besides if everyone was being complementary all the time would get kinda boring.
One of the worst covers Ive ever heard. The wonderful thing about the original is the emotion that Kate Bush conveys through her voice. This guy sounds the same in any song Ive ever heard from them. Drugged up and bored.
Seriously, anyone that likes this band has serious issues.
@Ristiankay I lol'd. The wonderful (and best) thing about the original is when the song ends. Funnily enough, that's kind of the same feeling I got when I read the hate-monger post you left behind without warrant on this video. What is good or bad is left up to the critic/listener/composer of any lyric - and the wonderful thing about opinions is that they are just that: opinions. But by your logic, anybody that likes Kate Bush also loves kicking puppies and making small children cry.
@Ristiankay Aw, this band grows on you. I promise. Yeah, he does sound kind of bored, but there's something about it that does have emotion, in my eyes. I seriously hated this band, but I found one song that I liked and then I began to like others. There's something different about their music that just kind of kind of reaches inside you and sits there. Too much of it becomes depressing real quick, but in moderate amounts it's soothing. Try listening to The Bitter End. He doesn't sound bored.
@JohnnyXFay I agree. When I first heard "Pure Morning" back '98, I didn't much care for the band. (I also blame this on being a pretreen at the time, and preteen girls always have bad taste in music.) BUT, "Every You Every Me" won me over, and each song just makes me like them more. Now I'm a fan, and think it's a shame they don't chart in US. The fact Brian Molko CAN AND DOES add emotion with his style of singing is really amazing, and says a lot for the band.
@copyvio Not entirely, Just means they did a better version than Kates, they found a better "mood" for the song. Also i guess it depends on what others opinions are.
The original should always be acknowledged. I like this. It's great. But I like Kate's original just as much. Look at all the covers that have been done - Willie Dixon songs are the perfect example - that are just brilliant. Dixon had to sue for royalties but covers are mostly tributes to the original artist. And this is a great tribute to Kate Bush.
Rubbish this is a dreary slowed down version like coldplay but they would have done sooo much better. The original is tight, clever and has just the right vocal and instrumental effects. Anyone one who thinks May thinks otherwise , you have to completely write a song otherwise you are stealing it from them etc etc
Somehow I'm more drawn to Placebo's cover of Running up that hill. Kate Bush's version is almost too fast for me, and I don't feel as much emotional depth through her. Of course, we are all entitled to our opinions, and Kate Bush definitely deserves credit for Running up that Hill. But for me, placebo helped take it to another and completely different (almost unable to compare for better OR for wose) dimension.
I'm a Kate Bush fan, and I respect Placebo, really do. But this cover is to slow for me, it makes me nervous... I miss that warm humanity Kate Bush puts on her music... it's to cold for my personal taste. Don't like it. But I'm not surprised, Kate Bush is pretty much an Original, difficuld to cover... Placebo, you are brave trying!!
A shame it technically ISN'T featuring Kate Bush. It would have been really cool if they did a remix with her doing some parts of HER song along with Placebo.
On a side note, I usually really hate covers but I thought Placebo did a good job with this one. They basically kept with the unique sound Kate had with the song while still making it their own.
@alexthenerd1 Technically this song IS Placebo featuring Kate Bush, but only because it is a cover. Yes, all rights to the original song belong to Kate Bush, but this isn't that original song. =)
Now when Timbaland took OneRepublic's "Apologize," slightly changed the tempo, kept OneRepublic's vocal tracks, and only added "Eyyy eyyyy eyyyy," then dared to release the song under Timbaland feat. OneRepublic.
wow McFuck...very smart and intelligent . you know what? you're right, placebo sucks even though you went to one of their songs just to preach about how bad they are. i am the wrong one right? i am wrong because i like placebo and went to their song so i can listen to it. i am wrong that i asked a fucking twat why he posted that comment. yes i am mcfuck
As much as I love Kate Bush's song, and she put words to what happened to me in 1981, this song captures the emotion. He brings me back to that alley way. That face. More than half my life ago.
