I saw Lauryn in concert in L.A a few weeks back over at USC.. She was on the bill with MUSE,Rage Against The Machine. She was upset with the sound guys. I could bearly hear her sing ,,over the music. Besides her mood was not so positive and the audience could sense it?? Roberta Flack written and composed this sing,,I prefer Miss Flacks versions better..No offense..

Same scenario with "(I Never Promised You a) Rose Garden" by Lynn Anderson. Lynn was about the 3rd or 4th person to record the song, but it was her 1971 version that was a world-wide, mega hit - and the best known version to most ppl.

What is wonderful and unique about this performance with this particular song IS her condition in which she sang it. She did not just prettily float along until the end because she couldn't; it was a struggled journey. She faced obstacles in this song that we witnessed her overcome. That is the strength of this performance, especially as she climbs to that last note that seemed triumphant against all the others, without break, courseness or any trace of prior weakness, with complete victory.
I can tell she has a great voice, perhaps it's just out of sorts here. I love the song. It would be great if she did this in the studio when her voice is in shape. Probably would sound awesome.

Be careful when u say original. Roberta's version is NOT the original but actually Seeger's 1957 folk version is. But I also feel the same as you, Roberta delivered an emotion rare to find elsewhere and Lauryn has no shame to use her voice regardless the way it sounds to deliever a similar emotion the best way she can. Actually, I give LH MAD props for this performance. It's not that she was hoarse, but, you can hear she is clearly congested and there is loose phlegm in her chest. She'll be back you all! Keep in mind, she has 5 kids now! She can't just jump on stage and sing like she used to. Her kids come first and foremost! All we know, she's back in full voice now! With my being a singer, I know how singing alot can strain the vocals.

she drew the line in the sand with her unplugged album...she made it very clear what she was going to stand for...and it wasn't going to be some watered down commercial version of herself.

Bar far one of the most moving performances I've ever seen. I was in the front row. Girl was breakin up as she sung....u cant see so clear here but her eyes were streaming tears down her face all the way thru.

Maybe coz she does a lot of singing, the vocal cords need to rest. Colds can also do that to ya cords.. 2:44 she struggles a little bit, she still sounds beautiful though!

I am the #1 Lauryn Hill Fan!! Ever since the Fugees and Sister Act II (Rita was just misunderstood - that's my story and I'm sticking to it!). Lauryn Hill is giving me chills on this song! Wowow! She'll be back you all! Keep in mind, she has 5 kids now! She can't just jump on stage and sing like she used to. Her kids come first and foremost! All we know, she's back in full voice now! With my being a singer, I know how singing alot can strain the vocals.

I really get so sick when people always have something to say about Lauryn's voice or any other artists voice. Vocalists put 100 times more strain on their vocal cords than those that don't sing, so who cares if her voice was raspier than normal.
