when my brother, sister and i were kids, we found out that our dogs liked to "save" us when we were in the pool. we would swim out to the deep and then thrash around and yell like we were drowning, and our dogs would immediately jump in and swim towards us. i miss those doggies :(

@leonawraight7 Not all animals can swim. And most dogs are not born knowing how to swim - a lot of dogs won't even get into water. But once they get in the water the first time and paddle around, their swimming instinct kicks in and they can swim around - and love it. I will say though that it's easier for some breeds to swim than others. I heard that chow chows can't swim for example. (cause they don't have the swimming-tissue-stuff between their toes)

@nosu376 It isn't that they lack the know-how, but they lack the proper proportions to enable them to swim easily. Front heavy dogs -as everyone else is saying- have difficulties because their bodies are not shaped well enough to enable them to paddle through water. The weight drags them down. Also, not all dogs are MEANT to be in the water-- there are certain breeds that are actually made for swimming- such as most hunting/sporting dogs, since they need to retrieve a kill from water sometimes.

@92fudbaler Linus can't swim so we have to keep one on him when he's around water. Boxers are front heavy and have very little body fat so many have difficulty swimming. We tried coaxing him in once without a vest and he nearly sank.
