@wlexxx Water refracts light; causing it to bend and travel in different directions. Because the bottle has those curves at the bottom, it makes the light shine in a wide area. If you didnt put water in the bottle, it would be the same as putting a hole in the roof; the light only shines in that small area where the hole is.
