What do you call the fallacy usend when you answer the question YOU WANT to answer instead of the one YOU WERE ASKED? Politicians and other debater often use it, to try to avoid dealing with an inconvenient question.
@theantisauronist Misdirection, the Magician's only tool. Sleight of hand, also known as prestidigitation ("quick fingers") or legerdemain. It can be contrasted with the flourish, where the magician intentionally displays skills, such as the ability to cut cards one-handed, which is akin to juggling. Politicians are well practiced and rehearsed at the "black arts", ignoring any issue that divides voters. Instead of addressing who gets taxed I'll just say it's "Time for a change", "New Hope"!
@shizzleman8 Right. In the video "Sharpton / Hitchens Debate - Can Morality Exist Without God?", Sharpton poses the question "Isn't it delusional and arrogant to believe we, and not God, can decide what morality is?" Hitchens then distracts the audience (2:39 - 3:01) with quotes and a joke, and then, when everybody (even Sharpton, possibly) forgot what the question was, he answers his own, which seems to be "can religion lead to violence in the wrong hands?".
@theantisauronist A light at the end of the tunnel! I was watching the Craig v. Sleziak debate in Sydney Australia last night where Craig was arguing that objective morality can and does exist apart from the question of God's morality. Christianity gives the users an illusionary superior morality says, John Loftus, a former student of Craig's, and former Christian minister turned atheist. When I was writing my last comment I was reminded of Lois from Family Guy running for Mayor, 9 - .. 11, 9-
@shizzleman8 I'm afraid I have no idea of whom Craig or Sleziak are my friend. When (or if) I get some time soon I'll check that out. In the meantime, thanks for the invite.
@theantisauronist@drcraigvideos < Check that page out my friend. I misstated Dr. William Lane Craig's position in my last comment, better to let him speak for himself, and it's slezak not the butchering of his name i gave b4 either. See Craig, Dawkins and the Empty Chair video at the users page along with the first in the series of Craig v. Slezak. Check out my first recommeded channel also Open Philosophy. What I wouldn't give to be in your shoes now! Thank you for sharing with me!
@theantisauronist Meant to write Craig often argues for objective morality apart from the question of God's existence, instead I was thinking and wrote the word morality.
Have you seen the video Craig, Dawkins and the empty chair? Dr. William Lane Craig is a far superior debater than his opponents not just for having done his homework and in my opinion has the better argument to start, but he addresses, and redresses his opponents propositions, there's no side stepping with him!
@theantisauronist Avoiding the question fallacy. Fallcies [Internet Encylopedia]
The fallacy of avoiding the question is a type of fallacy of avoiding the issue that occurs when the issue is how to answer some question. The fallacy is committed when someone’s answer doesn’t really respond to the question asked. Example: Question: Would the Oakland Athletics be in first place if they were to win tomorrow’s game?Answer: What makes you think they’ll ever win tomorrow’s game?
In the straw man description, he says that actually addressing the opponent's argument would be agreeing with it, suggesting that to have a debate, one MUST make a straw man. I don't understand his reasoning. Anybody care to suggest his meaning?
@WellConditionedChimp That's the whole joke, that people have broadened the idea of the "straw man" so much that some debaters will portray any disagreement as a straw-man attack, whether or not that's really the case. Most of the "advice" in this video is about how you can make a smug fool out of yourself by stretching the definition of a fallacy too far.
This is one of my all time favorite youtube videos. I've actually taken to using the 'ignoring the fact that they might be dracula' mantra whenever anyone gives me an 'us v them' type of dichotomy when trying to score political or religious points.
its not utter crap, (utters are not a cow's rectum) so im gonna say the first option...unless its neither, and is in fact, Dracula. I'm so sorry for stealing your jokes Lore Sjoberg.
heh, but in the simpsons, wasn't dracula in fact a republican, along with burns and others. lawlz. Good arguments. But I am in fact begging the question aren't I?
I know of a couple of people who fight all the time on the internet.Geez about everything. Like get the hell back here now!! or W/e or I don't really care. Silly computer geeks.I win afew lol
