what a beast, if powerlifting today was more like this with actually legit lifts unlike 400lb blobs of dough wrapped in steel shirts moving a bar 2 inches the sport would be more universally excepted.
If you look at raw records, and shirt records of sayyyy.. the 165lbs class, you will see that the world raw record is 488lbs. That same guy holds a world record of 705lbs in a shirt.
@MrOnceinside Well, it's probably more than one shirt worn at the same time during the same lift, but a 217 pound discrepancy from one lift to another, (with the shirt being the only added element,) is just a disgrace. I don't want to be known for any lift that I didn't really do on my own or that really isn't me doing it. Who am I trying to impress here with a lie anyway? This is just stupid.
To all of dumb asses who know nothing about power lifting listen to this. Bench shirts do not lift the weight for you. They only assist the bottom few inches of the bench so when these guys are benching these heavyweights they are doing it themselves once it gets off there chest a few inches. One more thing you guys bitch that they are only benching the weight a few inches, thats because they are using proper setup and technique. His technique was bad with good coaching he would be the best
Dude his form was shithouse too. Didnt lock his back , didnt drive through his feet. and still dominated it.. freaky. Imagine what he could of done with a coach like dave tate ....
I can't fuckin stand powerlifting as it exists today with all the hydraulic uniforms moving the weight. Not sure that they can do away with steroids as drug testing only checks to see that you havent used recently...and supposedly there are ways to beat the tests anyway. But outlawing the absolute gayness of these uniforms would be a good start in cleaning the sport and enticing real "strength" athletes to get into the sport.
@VILEHOG I realize that, I was just saying that even if federations did drug test, there would be inherent inefficiencies with the process anyway...such testing will be difficult to ever test accurately. But the elimination of certain types of gear would be a HUGE step in the right direction and would be a "low hanging fruit" in getting the sport cleaned up.
Now why do the guys who claim that they can bench 1,000 pounds today, (some 300 more than Ted here,) don't even physically look like him in even the remotest sense? Ted's muscle-mass literally made him look like a human gorilla but the 1,000 pound bench-press'ers of today are all dough-boys who don't even look powerful at all. Can somebody say, "Too damn many bench-shirts, wraps, gear and gimicks?" You better believe it! Powerlifting today is a joke. Anyone can lift big wrapped-up like a mummy!
Could not have said it better myself bro.. and notice his bench press.. he lets them break it... then takes total control of the weight.. brings it to his chest and back up.. thats the proper way to bench.. Not like these fake bastards today wearing bench shirts and only moving the bar 4 inches.
@poeticwisdom555 And only a couple of guys who have spent most of their lives benching the proper way would understand your statement here; namely you and me! Hell, I could bench over 700 with all the stupid gimicks that I see utilized time and time again here on YouTube, but I would never live it down if I made myself look that damn dumb! It took more than 20 years from the days of Pat Casey benching 600 to finally break the 700 mark...but only a decade or so to go from 700 to over 1,100? =(
@1charisma2011 I really do wish they would man, but that's not about to happen now. This "gear, drug and clown" phenomenon is a cancer that has destroyed powerlifting the same way that it's destroyed bodybuilding. So many young punks here on YouTube worship these guys today because they don't know what real lifting and real men of iron truely are and that's not about to change any time soon. The next generation is already terribly misled by these ridicilous punks that now "rule the sport."
@MrSchultzstaffel Just to add to your comment. There have actually been cases where the bench shirts were so tight that weights of 500+ would'nt even reach the chest of the powerlifter.
@TheMightykaz God that's disgraceful! And yes, I wouldn't doubt it either! That's living proof that when these people say that the shirt itself helps out with possibly no more than perhaps 50 or so pounds of support...well, you make the call. I put one on one time just out of curiousity and took it off after one set. The assistance it provided was wayyyy too much, it was no longer me doing the lift and I felt like an idiot! I've been a bare-chested bencher ever since! Imagine wear'in 3 of em'!
@TheMightykaz ...and to follow up...if this "new breed' of "powerlifter" is so much greater than the great's of yester-year...then let's solve that riddle right now; just take off the gear, put down the bizarre, figure-8, duct-tape sleeve's, get rid of the 2 by 4's, and let's see what a bare chest'ed effort can produce. Surely a man who can bench 1,000 pounds with the gear can certainly power-up 500 for an easy 20 reps bare chested? No? Well, what about 400 for 20 then? Still no? Uhhh...315? =(
@MrSchultzstaffel Yet how exactly do you explain scot mendelson being one of those 1,000 pound bench-pressers that use a shirt, but also holds the world record with a 715 lb raw bench press. I can guarantee that most of the powerlifters wearing bench shirts could also match up against ted in a raw bench press.
@sourcecode123 First off I don't try to "explain" any of the so-called "athlete's" today in a sport that revolve's around an obvious drug-culture, (and that includes Arcidi here.) Secondly, 715 is a far cry from 1,000. Third, your statement that you can "guarantee" can only be proven if we dispense with the multiple shirts, "figure-8" duct-tape sleeves, 2 by 4's and 2 inch range's of motion. And I'll guarantee you that a strict enforcement of those rules will eliminate 95% of these clowns today.
@MrSchultzstaffel I agree. His back is totally flat on the bench too and not arching and his grip is not as wide as today. Plus he doesn't have all that fat to bounce the weight from.
@Naturalhit Pretty amazing isn't it? He had more in him...how much I don't know, but each lift was pushed up there with authority...not like some of the "by the skin of your teeth, barely got it up there after 10 minutes" lifts that I'm known for! lol
@MrSchultzstaffel i hope it makes you feel better im 15 trying to gt into powerlifting and im going to aviod all the modern bench shirts, squat suits and gear.
@pooliothefoolio You'll do yourself a favor by doing so.The weights that you ultimately lift will be lifted by you and only you and not with some form of slight of hand or some gimmick or trick. The foundation of size and power that you build will not be reliant on a ridiculous support mechanism that has no place in sports to begin with. But even more important than that, never fall prey to the lie that performance enhancing drugs have to offer you either.Real men don't need drugs to be somebody.
@pooliothefoolio When you refuse to do drugs...progress is a lot harder. It comes a lot slower. It's a lot more difficult and you really have to know your stuff and be patient. But the gains that you make are all 100% yours. Their not dependant on what's in a bottle or if your drug dealer came through with the new shipment of dope. And when the dust settles, only one man in the room is truly big, powerful and 250 pounds of solid muscle; and that man is you. The rest are all little children.
how is it that u dont see guys like ed coan and him theese days? all the crappy gear shit iaint nothing compared to this, btw was he the world's strongest bencher before scot mendelson?
Holy shit - you're right! Ted looked fantastic here - what an ass...and the other guys, woof! I loved the tight little shorts in the 80s...and remember football players wearing the cut off jerseys so you could see their hairy bellies?

These are lowsy show lifts. Not paused, no hold at the top. Just out of the rack, touch and go and staight back into the rack.
Don't get me wrong, strong guy, good physique and strong lifts, but these lifts shouldn't have qualified as meet lifts.
