@Britishrain : A "Zato" is the term that is/was used in period Japan to describe a blind[e] person (usually a beggar, since that's what most people believed they were good for). "Ichi" is "One"

A "ZatoIchi" is a "Blind One", in this case, the "one" is a "swordsman".

If they were to call this person a hero, now, I think he would be "ZatoKenSei". A Blind Sword's Saint, or - European = master swordsman.

This is the 2003 version of the film. All other are 1962 onwards, I believe. lmgtfy.com.

for my part, I think he is not blind in the physical sense. He just got so used to "seeing" the world more with his spirit and heart than with his physical eyes that it's more like he is used to "seeing" more - and better - with his inner eyes.

He tought me to fight using the style of kendo completely blindfolded. The trick is to use gravity, sound, wind, and confusion to your advantage. Few people know how to do it anymore, but its pretty effective as long as youre good at keeping calm.

All the input goes to the other senses since that part of your brain is no longer receiving input from your eyes. I never heard of a genuine blind samurai except in stories but I suppose its possible if you're trained to kill.

@vanizorc In aikido, theres alot of sword practice and aikido is all about ki. Once you reach a certain point where your ki strong and defined, It's like a 6th sense to feel all movements in your surrounding area without the use of touch. Theres no youtube videos of this that I know of but Kubo Shihan of Aikikai AHI(my senseis' sensei) is beyond exceptional when demonstrating weapons combat while blindfolded.

Zatoichi cut down many crime syndicates and clans that would take advantage of people's towns, hold rigged gambling, sell slaves, forge criminal sentences, etc. He'd been doing it for so many years that he was no longer able to use his own name (usually going by just Ichi) because of the bounty on his life. At heart, he IS indeed a peaceful, wise man but has been wandering through a world where those who can still see try to take advantage of him.. forcing him to become violent.

If you watch the tap dance, which is the end of this show, you'll realise that this is a show about human harvest. The dancers live because Zatoichi has gotten rid of those who, well, die, but strangely enough, Zatoichi is also like the monster in good old dragon-killing tales, who isn't present at the celebrations, and who, upon his "death" or disappearance; leaving the community, seems to set the rest of it free.
