OK... I've just thankfully landed here, after listening to about 20 different versions of this on YouTube, looking for a good one. And all some of you can hear is his hair?
Brahms was the Viennese heir apparent to Beethoven. Many of his contemporaries found his compositions to be longwinded. He waited until much later in his career to compose his first symphony and one of his primary supporters was Clara Schumann, celebrated concert pianist and widow of celebrated composer Robert Schumann whose mental illness resulted in death by self imposed starvation. This piece is truly lovely and very Brahms.
This hair proves how much he cares about music; he lets it grow out, he doesn't care. He just rolls out of bed and flops down to his keyboard and starts playing beautiful music - to heck with appearances!
Arrange for violin or voice - as I play this I hear the words "the raging tide won't be denied" referring to Victor Hugo's "Toilers of the Sea" which I was reading at time I learned this 1947-50.
I love this piece but especially when Mr. Kissin plays it. I've compared with another version of the same piece, but this is the best of the bests to me.
Nice, the intimacy of the piece is well expressed, emotionally layered and with restraint, which makes it even more brittle. Maybe a bit too for my taste but hey, it's a waltz
To be honest, I used to be highly sceptical about Kissin, since I always felt that his playing was "somewhat" shallow (the same with Langlang btw.). But some of his perfomances I recently came across appear to be highly probable to change my mind.
I think that Kissin's playing is not shallow at all. Yes, he is relatively young and still improving(besides the technical part), but he got a lot of thoughts when he plays.
Compare him with Langlang? Well, I would say they are absolutely not in the same level.
do you know where i can get free sheet music online? if you do, could you send me a message on my account? (i'm using my brothers right now) My account is xjonnaxleex2395... thanx!
that was incredible! i'm 14 and i just played this at a recital, not nearly as well as this. (my piano teacher keeps telling me that she has never heard anyone else play it as well as me, but i knew she was wrong. this guy is amazing!)
I like this song a lot, but i think there's something to be said for having it be a bit slower to start with, and move around a bit more. The copy I have is just over a minute and a half.
Interesting contrast between this piece played in 92 seconds and Lipatti who plays the same in 66 seconds. I guess I prefer Kissin with more chance to savor the melody. Thank you You Tube for both.
Me encanta Brahms especialmente sus "vals", que fueron utilizados por Frederick Ashton para crear la pieza Five Brahms Waltzes in the Manner of Isadora Duncan
Ah, Miyazak, We think of butterflies dancing in the breeze, ahhhh! and happy girls picking daisies. there, does that make you happy?
Truth is, we think of sex. At every available opportunity. This piece by Brahms was written to lull women into thinking, it's safe. Reality is, it's all foreplay.
Oh yes, and we're not 'guys' Guys you burn on bonfire night. We're 'men' Ok?
Snevets don't be cruel to Miyazaki. You just wait till you're older. You won't think about sex then, except as a distant memory, and that will be mere recollection. Instead of sex, you'll be thinking about stuff like, "Why do I hurt so much?" and "What was I doing?" and "Who's that old fart in the mirror?" Hey, and what about the guys that help hold things up; don't they count too? Besides, melancholia+soothing=sex anyway ... damned butterflies!
everytime i hear this I think of two old people dancing a waltz, the old man trying to console his wife of bad memories, To me this song is melancholy and soothing at the same time. Although I am curious. What do you guys picture when you see this?
Alas...I picture my sweet cat dying beside me in my bed. This was playing on the radio as she breathed her last. It will forever be in my mind as "Diddum's Song". Every time I hear it. I think of her sweet face.
I adore Brahms and respect that Evgeny Kissin is an incredible pianist. Although it's played beautifully, there isn't a lot of feeling behind his playing. It just seems a little dry. But, I do like his hair and know sometimes you just have to be there to really get what's going on.
Then I stand corrected... Maybe I just haven't heard enough of him...
I mean I watched him play Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1 and there didn't seem to be a single note out of place... however I've never heard him play the Chopin Piano Concerto No. 1.
have you heard lang lang live? He obviously doesn't miss notes in recordings... His technique is obviously very good, all I'm saying is that he made WAY too many mistakes at the concert I heard given that he has a reputation as a super virtuoso.
Sorry, I was responding to a comment about lang lang and his technical mistakes when he plays live. I actually think Kissin has better technique than Lang Lang, and he actually makes many fewer mistakes (I agree with the comments about their respective musicalities too)

kissin doesnt drown you in his own emotion. if you want to watch someone "feeling it" go watch lang lang or something.
i think kissin's playing has a good balance of technical precision and emotion
also he was pretty young here.
theot337 3 years ago
I think the last person who can play with emotion is Lang Lang...
The guy is an actor first, then a pianist second.
He does have brilliant technique, but melodically... he sucks. He plays pieces WAY TOO FAST and strives for speed over beauty.
