Yeah, it can also be said that he was against forced segregation. Voting against the Civil rights act is often taken out of context. But basically libertarianism is against a lot of government intervention. Segregation is a form of government legislation. Libertarians believe that no govt owned areas ought to have segregation because of "taxation without representation". Voting against the civil rights act was simply upholding ideas against federal government power (10th amendment).
Really it all comes down to states rights. Should the government have the power to make states integrate? I think that is the main reason so many libertarians were against it. Each state should make its own laws regarding issues like that.

However, libertarianism is a little different from constitutionalism. Libertarians are not inclined towards states' rights. It sucks that upholding the constitution before legislation such as the civil rights act can make it easy for others to paint you as a racist. But they often take it out of context and needs a lot of explanation in terms of explaining your principles. Unfortunately, in our two party system, it's less about principles and more about political exploitation.

Yeah, it can also be said that he was against forced segregation. Voting against the Civil rights act is often taken out of context. But basically libertarianism is against a lot of government intervention. Segregation is a form of government legislation. Libertarians believe that no govt owned areas ought to have segregation because of "taxation without representation". Voting against the civil rights act was simply upholding ideas against federal government power (10th amendment).

Voting against the civil rights act was a statement of states rights held by the 10th amendment. Constitutionalists are more for states' rights. However, libertarianism is a little different from constitutionalism. Libertarians are not inclined towards states' rights. But libertarians in a southern state would agree that public schools should integrate but private schools should not be forced to do so, because everyone's taxes pays for public schools and are not allowed to discriminate.

Libertarianism is young. It has young supporters. It is highly intellectual, unlike the Neoconservative philosophy, and furthermore - it's popular. Libertarians are proud to raise their heads and say "I am Libertarian". Most Republicans hide their heads in shame these days.
What does this tell us? Libertarianism will replace Republicanism. The Republican party can either embrace it, or they will be supplanted by it.

The "war" in Iraq is illegal: only Congress can declare war, and they never did. The cowards didn't want the responsibility. All they have to do is pull the plug and stop paying for it or vote to declare war. Instead, they refuse to uphold their oaths of office and defend the Constitution and our rights.

They can laugh at Ron Paul all they want, but the truth is unchanging. Ron Paul was the ONLY member during the primary that said the economy would be the issue in the near future NOT the war and these schmucks still don't get it. Without a solid economy you have NO MILITARY. The Republican Party is dead and this country will be destroyed from the inside soon if something miraculous doesn't happen to force these so-called representatives to pull their head out of their anal cavities.

The only thing the Republican party can hang on is the war. How proud they must be. Whether we are "winning" or not is irrelevant. We opened a can of worms that is going to bankrupt us when they should have focused on our defense and internal red tape that prevented our departments from communicating to prevent 9/11 in the first place.
